Chapter 240 Celebrity (Two-In-One)
In a black Ford Explorer, Xiao Hei drove while grumbling,
"This couple has a problem.
They don't adopt children out of love; they treat fostering as a business.
If they had taken their responsibilities seriously, Kunni'er might still be alive.
Just look at what they're doing; we call to ask about him, and they intentionally hide Kunni'er's whereabouts.
When we go to investigate, they don't even know anything about Kunni'er's recent situation.
Don't know where Kunni'er lives, don't know what he does, don't know what he's been through?
They don't even know he's dead.
What they care about is just the subsidy!
I'm going to report them."
Luke didn't respond; matters like this were quite complicated.
Mr. and Mrs. Yagate were definitely responsible, but fostering has always meant dependency on others.
Luke had secretly asked Carter, who thought the Yagates were quite good, and Luke didn't think he was lying.
Perhaps each child's definition of good is different, but Carter seemed quite satisfied with his current life.
If Xiao Hei were to report the Yagates and they lost their foster care qualifications, Carter and the Asian girl would also have to be sent back to the foster center and wait for a new foster family.
Their fates would change too.
Luke and Xiao Hei would also bear the consequences.
The consequences Luke was talking about weren't metaphysical, but the very real consequences on life.
Just like Jaden, Xiao Hei had already become involved in Jaden's life; the more he helped Jaden, the deeper he was drawn in.
Similarly, if Carter and the Asian girl were sent back to the foster center because of their report, and if the new foster family they were placed with was even worse than the Yagates, then Luke and Xiao Hei would also be responsible.
This was the consequence Luke was talking about.
If it really came to that, he would feel guilty.
So, handling this situation correctly was crucial.
To do nothing was definitely not an option; Kunni'er had died, and it should attract certain attention to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.
But outright revoking the Yagates' fostering qualifications was also inappropriate.
Luke thought that the best method would be to suggest to the relevant departments to conduct a review of the Yagates, to allow professionals to get involved and closely observe the family for a period of time, to see if they were suitable to continue fostering children.
Among this, the opinions of Carter and the Asian girl were the most important.
In Luke's experience, it might not be certain whether Carter and the Asian girl would be sent back to the foster center, but it would be quite difficult for the Yagates to foster new children.
As they drove into the Yarbo community, Luke saw a police patrol car parked in front of a house and realized it was the home of Derek Yasuo they were looking for.
The two got out of the car, and Luke showed his badge to an officer, asking, "What happened here?"
A white patrolling officer came over, pointing to a white man with a big beard and said, "We received a call that someone fired a gun in the community.
The caller is this Mr. Brown, who claims that the child being fostered at his home was shot.
He says the shooter was LAPD."
"Can you confirm it was LAPD who fired the shot?"
"No, when we arrived, both the child and the person claiming to be LAPD had already left."
"I'm Luke, the deputy chief of Robbery and Murder Department; I want to talk to the reporter."
"OK, please go ahead."
Luke approached the door, asking the bearded white man, "Are you Mr. Brown, the reporter?"
"Yes, who are you?"
Luke showed his badge, "Deputy Chief of the Robbery and Murder Department, Luke. What happened here?"
"Two LAPD came looking for my boy Derek. Although Derek can be naughty, he is not bad at heart; he was probably scared.
He jumped out the rear window to the ground below, and the two LAPD told Derek to stop.
Derek didn't listen; he just ran.
Then the two LAPD fired their guns!" the bearded man said angrily,
"My God, how could they do this? Derek is still a child, he hadn't done anything dangerous, hadn't hurt anyone, he was just running.
Why did they shoot?
They were committing murder!
I'm going to sue them!"
Luke confirmed, "Are you sure Derek didn't pose a threat to those two claiming to be LAPD?"
"I'm sure. Derek had no weapon, he was just running with his head down, he didn't even look back; how could he have posed a threat to them."
"Can you confirm they were LAPD?"
"I can't."
"Have you seen them before?"
"No."
"Where did they go?"
"One went after Derek on foot, and the other chased him in the car. I wanted to stop them, but they threatened me with their guns.
They told me not to move!
I really tried to stop them, but...
I was powerless!
I could only watch as they treated my child like that," the bearded man said, showing a look of frustration, "This is LAPD!
We pay so much in taxes every year, so you can catch criminals, not shoot innocent people."
"Mr. Brown, please don't get agitated. The police will not shoot at innocent people recklessly when their own safety is not threatened.
We will investigate this matter. If they are LAPD, and if there was misconduct, the relevant departments will sanction them."
"Right now, I just want to find Derek and ensure his safety."
"Are you talking about Derek Yasuo?"
"How do you know?"
