Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 259: Women

Although they saw what the woman looked like through surveillance, she didn't get a membership card and used cash to pay, making it impossible to trace her identity.

The surveillance outside the supermarket revealed that the woman left on foot without driving a vehicle, so there was no way to check the license plate number.

All of these points further solidified Luke's belief that this woman was problematic, deliberately avoiding police investigation, and had a certain level of counter-surveillance awareness.

However, Luke didn't immediately go looking for this suspicious woman, not because he didn't want to find her, but because there were more important things to do.

Checking sales records, looking through surveillance footage, and finding every person who bought Wilson brand mineral water from Shanyuan Supermarket.

The mineral water sold could very likely contain the highly toxic substance, cyanide, and to prevent more tragedies from happening, the police needed to warn these people not to consume the water.

Around one o'clock in the afternoon, Clint Chen, the captain of the second squad of the Robbery and Murder Department, led a team to provide support.

Captain Chen's bald head was still shining, his expression as serious as ever.

After handing over the case to him, Luke went out to eat with Xiao Hei, as both had been busy investigating the scene since morning without a break for food.

Starving and listless, Xiao Hei asked, "What shall we eat?"

Looking around, Luke said, "Get in the car, let's go to the Korean community and see what good food we can find."

Xiao Hei pointed not far away, "Isn't that a Korean restaurant over there?"

"That place isn't authentic. Besides, the poisoning incident just happened at Shanyuan Supermarket, and the two places are so close together. Can you stomach it?"

Xiao Hei nodded, "You're right."

The two got into the car, and Luke directed, "Drive slowly, I want to see what good food is around here."

Having partnered with Luke for so long, Xiao Hei was somewhat familiar with Luke's character, "Are you keeping something from me?"

"I just want to take the chance to see if we can find that Korean woman who appeared at Shanyuan Supermarket nearby."

"How can you be sure she's Korean? Just because this is a Korean community?"

"That's just one of the reasons."

Continuing to guess, Xiao Hei said, "Because of kimchi? I've heard Koreans like to eat kimchi."

"That's a big part of it."

"Any other reasons?"

"I can tell."

Disbelieving, Xiao Hei asked, "Really? I feel like Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, they all look pretty similar. How do you tell them apart?"

"Clothes, manners, features, demeanor…" Luke shook his head, "You can't learn this."

Pouting, Xiao Hei said, "OK, so how do you plan to find her? Without knowing her identity, address, or license plate number."

Luke analyzed, "This woman is Korean, and she likely lives in the nearby Korean community. And since she didn't drive, it's possible her home isn't far from the supermarket.

Koreans are relatively close-knit, and many know each other.

After we eat, we'll visit the area, and maybe we'll find out where this Korean woman is."

Xiao Hei remarked, "That sounds pretty good."

The two chose a Korean restaurant since they had to continue their investigation after eating; they kept it simple.

Two servings of jjajangmyeon, sweet-and-sour pork, grilled mackerel, fried chicken, doenjang soup, and two complimentary side dishes, pickled radishes, and kimchi.

Since they were at a Korean restaurant, how could they miss out on kimchi?

Saying they would eat simply, they ordered quite a bit as Luke and Xiao Hei were both food lovers who, even in the midst of an investigation, wouldn't shortchange their palates.

The case was for others to investigate, but the body was their own. Luke's body in his past life had suffered greatly, and it was a loss he didn't want to experience a second time.

Overall, the meal was not bad, though the jjajangmyeon was a bit sweet and lacked the flavor of those in their home country.

The grilled mackerel was rather good.

What left the deepest impression on Luke was the golden pickled radish, which crunched pleasingly in his mouth and tasted quite good; a pleasant surprise.

After all, being a kingdom of pickled dishes, there was something unique about this place.

While settling the bill, Luke took out a photo of the suspicious woman and asked the server to identify her, but she had no recollection of her.

Luke hadn't expected to succeed with a single attempt and continued the inquiry.

Restaurants, convenience stores, gas stations, flower shops, bars, barber shops…

Luke and Xiao Hei canvassed the nearby streets for a long time and asked many people, but none recognized the Korean woman.

Xiao Hei's enthusiasm gradually waned, and Luke began to doubt whether his guess was wrong.

They then entered a nail salon. It wasn't a large shop, rather long and narrow, seemingly only a few dozen square meters in size.

There were three Korean women inside, one in her twenties, one in her thirties, and one over fifty.

Luke sized up the three, his gaze settling on the thirty-something Korean woman; he felt she was more likely the owner.

Indeed, the thirty-something Korean woman spoke up, "Gentlemen, do you also want to get your nails done?"

Waving his dark hand around, Xiao Hei asked, "Is that okay?"

"Of course, as long as you like," the Korean woman said with a smile.

Waving his hand as if performing magic, Xiao Hei pulled out a badge, "Sorry to disappoint you, we're not here for a manicure.

We're LAPD, and we'd like to ask you about something."

The Asian woman frowned slightly, "Oh, our nail salon is fully licensed and legitimate."

"Don't be nervous, we're just trying to inquire about a person." Luke took out his phone and opened a photo of the suspicious woman, "Do you recognize her?"

The three women leaned in to look.

Luke said, "She should live in the nearby community."
