Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 262: Talk Show_4

Reid gave a few more instructions, and everyone split up to investigate.

Luke, accompanied by Hope, rushed to the bar to conduct his investigation.

Hope said, "So many people saw Darcy drink the mineral water himself, and he even bought it from the supermarket himself, so what else is there to investigate?"

"You're right, but we still need to check the scene; otherwise, I'll feel uneasy."

"OK, you're the boss."

Luke and Hope drove to the Limelight Comedy Club.

The club was still under lockdown.

Upon disembarking from the car, Luke saw a woman talking with the alert patrol officer.

Luke had seen a photo of the woman; it was indeed the club's host, Kristen Enco.

Luke walked over and flashed his badge, "I'm Luke, Deputy Chief of Squadron One at the Robbery and Murder Department. We need to examine the scene."

The patrol officer opened the tape.

Kristen Enco initiated a conversation, "Deputy Chief Luke, you're with the Robbery and Murder Department too? Why didn't I see you last night?"

"Miss Enco, did you need something?"

"You know me."

"Of course, I'm currently in charge of this case."

"May I ask when our club can resume business? You've already taken the body, and the scene has been examined, so can we reopen for normal business now?"

Hope retorted, "Darcy just died, and you're in a hurry to reopen, isn't that a bit inappropriate?"

"I don't wish it either, but if we keep closed, the shareholders will complain. It puts me in a difficult position."

Luke said, "Miss Enco, if you're not too busy, why don't you join me on a walk through the bar? I've just taken over the case and need to examine the scene firsthand."

"Does it mean we can open doors for business after you've seen the scene?"

"I cannot make any promises, but the smoother the investigation goes, the sooner your club can resume operations."

"Alright, follow me please." The three of them entered the bar, and Kristen Enco said, "Darcy was a great comedian, truly a loss."

Luke asked, "Did you know that a TV station had invited him to do a comedy show?"

"I wasn't aware, when was this?"

"Just before his incident, and from what I understand, if they had reached an agreement, Darcy's performances might have been somewhat limited."

Kristen Enco frowned slightly, "Are you suggesting that he was planning not to perform in my club anymore?"

"That's just my speculation," Luke responded, observing her expression, "You didn't know about this before?"

"No."

Her expression seemed genuine, and Luke's doubts about her diminished slightly.

Kristen Enco personally described the situation from the previous night. Although Luke was already aware of the sequence of events, he still wanted to hear it from the person involved.

Luke stood by one side of the bar's wall, which had quite a few comedy gags, the concise, intriguing kind that easily elicits laughter.

Luke pointed to two lines, 'Heaven made me talented, I just haven't found where to apply it yet.'

"Who wrote this?"

"Kenneth Sandy, he's also one of our comedians."

"Was he at the club last night?"

"Yes."

"What's his relationship with Darcy like?"

"Uh… well, their styles of performance are different. Darcy liked a style full of irony and self-mockery.

Kenneth believes that dry humor is the essence of stand-up comedy.

They really had different views on performance styles."

Luke felt she was holding something back, "Did they ever have a conflict?"

"Uh… since the club's opening, Kenneth has been a contracted comedian here, his style very steady, often the main event.

But Darcy's confrontational style was more appealing and more popular with most of the audience, so Darcy started closing the shows.

Kenneth indeed was dissatisfied with this, they argued a few times, but it's all in the past now."

"That might not be the case."

Luke, who had studied handwriting analysis, carefully compared the handwriting on the wall with that of a threatening letter and concluded it was likely written by the same person.

"What do you mean?"

"I'd like to have a chat with Kenneth, do you know where he is?"
