Chapter 6: The Capital
The caravan began to move forward after Nim got in, a few minutes later Nim heard other caravans nearby, when he looked around, he saw 6 more caravans, there was a larger caravan that was in the middle of the ones with more carriages.
The driver of another caravan, seeing his companion return, asked him "Did you find the person that the lord ordered?"
"Yes, he is inside" the middle-aged driver pointed behind him.
"Well, we have to hurry, the lord does not want any more delays" saying that he shook the ropes and the horses increased their speed.
The middle-aged driver did the same and matched the rhythm of the caravans.
Nim, who heard the whole conversation, did not say anything.
During the course of the trip, Nim had realized that there were also people who protected the caravans, they were probably the bodyguards that the merchant had hired.
Uncle Smith had explained a lot to him about the common sense of the world, sometimes the most dangerous were not the monsters but the people.
It is normal for a caravan to hire bodyguards, especially when they were on a long journey, otherwise they could be attacked by monsters or bandits, the latter being the most dangerous, there were many stories of caravans being attacked and then having all their members killed.
Nim was confident in his abilities but he would not let his guard down during the journey.
During the journey, Nim received one ration of food per day, although they only gave him a bowl of soup plus his own rations he did not go hungry.
On the night of the fifth day Nim was trying to sleep when he felt something, Nim the next moment he opened his eyes, a moment ago he had had a strange feeling.
During the course of his training, Nim had felt that feeling before, normally he felt it when a monster approached.
That strange perception of danger from Nim was something that surprised Uncle Smith.
Nim begins to hold his sword and vigilantly observes his surroundings, although the night made it difficult for him to see, he could still trust his perception.
After observing for a moment he notices a tree that was a few meters away, that tree seemed normal but Nim feels something when he looks at it.
.....
In the temporary camp that the caravans had made, 4 bodyguards were around, the perimeter was not very large so they did not go far from the caravan.
"Hey, it's almost time for us to change shifts" a bodyguard speaks to his partner, "yes, I hope you bastards haven't fallen asleep so deeply" the other bodyguard answered.
"Yes, let's go back quickly, I want to take a nap" the first bodyguard who spoke goes ahead and passes by the carriage that Nim was in, when he arrives he passes near a tree when a shadow jumps on the bodyguard, the bodyguard who was taken by surprise is hit by a dagger that stabs his throat.
The bodyguard, feeling the sudden and fatal attack, wants to scream but the words do not come out of his mouth.
Feeling the great loss of blood, the bodyguard feels a great dizziness along with despair as he collapses to the ground.
The shadow, seeing that his victim was close to the doors of death, rushes to quickly take the bodyguard's belongings before alarming the camp.
Searching the dying body he takes out a bag, in that bag there were copper and silver coins.
Upon obtaining that bag, the shadow turns around and tries to escape, as he takes a step he feels chills on his back, he quickly turns around only to find a sword that was quickly approaching his neck.
The shadow instinctively raises his dagger when the sword impacts with the dagger, the great force of the sword sends the dagger flying, the sword finding no obstruction cuts the shadow's neck, a head flies out while a fountain of blood follows it.
Nim, seeing the decapitated body, doesn't feel much, although it was the first time he killed a person it didn't feel so different from killing a monster.
Looking closely at the corpse of the shadow he realizes that it was a man in completely black clothing, in the darkness of the night it was very difficult to see it, if it weren't for his instincts he wouldn't have noticed it either.
...
The second guard who had been late finally arrives at the place only to see his companion dead from a cut on the neck and another decapitated body, surprised by the scene, he immediately raises an alarm to the entire caravan camp.
Being alarmed the people in the camp quickly wake up, the two guards who were in another area run back to the camp, the other bodyguards already awake approach the main carriage alert.
"What happened, why so much commotion?" a voice comes out of the large caravan, the doors open and a man with a large belly comes out.
"Sir, someone raised an alarm, it could be an attack" a bodyguard addresses the fat man.
"Attack?".. upon hearing that the man goes back into his caravan. "Investigate quickly, we still have 2 days to get to the capital." After that the fat man remained silent.
The other bodyguards begin to move and investigate who raised the alarm, when one of his companions runs towards them, and begins to tell what he saw and why he raised the alarm.
Upon hearing that, a group along with the bodyguard who arrived went to the area of the murder.
Upon arriving they see the two inert bodies. "Who was it?" a bodyguard asks. "I don't know when I got here, there was no one there besides the bodies." The witness bodyguard speaks helplessly.
His companion had gone ahead and later found him dead next to another body, the death of the two people must have been sudden, so that when he arrived everything was already over
"It must have been a lone assassin, this guy was unlucky" another bodyguard addressed his companion, but if the assassin killed his companion, who killed the assassin?
Faced with these questions the other bodyguards were somewhat scared.
"Okay, we'll all stand guard tonight, until dawn and we have to leave" a bodyguard who seemed to have more experience spoke.
Everyone attended, with the danger of being killed by another assassin no one objected.
At dawn all the caravans had moved from that place and finally the bodyguards could relax their nerves.
Although they were tired from not sleeping it was better than being killed.
...
Nim who was in the caravan cleaned the blood that had remained on his sword, the night before he had escaped quickly after killing the assassin.
He had learned from Uncle Smith that it was better not to draw attention to himself in order to avoid future problems.
With these teachings Nim could be more confident when facing the harsh environment of the world.
Two more days passed and no incidents occurred like that night, when reaching the seventh day Nim began to glimpse the great city on the horizon.
That city was the largest city in the Sinfrienld Country, the Capital.
