Chapter 319: The battle isn't over!
"I don't think these beasts are planning to let us leave in peace," Dante panted, sweat glistening on his forehead as the tremors of battle rumbled beneath their feet.
"You think?" Charlotte shot back, sarcasm laced in her voice just as a hulking ogre stepped into her path, its massive sword dragging along the stone with a menacing screech. Water coiled around her fingertips like serpents, swirling and shimmering as if alive.
With a sharp flick of her wrist, the coiling water snapped forward, lashing the ogre with violent force and sending it staggering back before it could raise its weapon.
The ogre snarled, digging its heel into the cracked floor. Then—BOOM!—it launched itself forward, stomping the ground with such force that the arena trembled. The beast's charge was so fast it seemed to blur, yet Charlotte didn't falter.
Above her, several swirling spheres of pressurized water rotated with deadly precision.
With a command, they blasted forward like miniature cannons, pounding against the ogre's sword with rapid bangs, forcing it to raise its weapon to defend as it stumbled back.
"Damn it! I can't fight and protect Grey at the same time," Charlotte growled through gritted teeth, her arms thrusting forward repeatedly to launch more blasts that held the beast at bay.
"Yeah? Well, I don't have enough mana to play around!" Dante barked back as jagged slabs of earth erupted beneath his feet, swirling and rising into a protective formation around the unconscious Grey and Dave. Four towering, crossed pillars of stone surrounded them like an improvised fortress.
An ogre—its eyes glowing with primal fury—noticed the motion and charged at Dante with its massive sword raised.
Sensing danger, Dante tore his gaze away from Grey just as the ogre stomped hard, sending a tremor that nearly knocked him off balance.
With a quick wave of his hand, a slab of earth erupted to intercept—but the ogre cleaved through it effortlessly, scattering debris.
CLUNK!
Fortunately, it bought Dante just enough time to finish reinforcing the pillars. Now encased in a crisscross of hardened stone, Grey and Dave lay secure.
The ogre brought its sword down toward Dante, but the earth mage reacted swiftly. Layers of dense rock coiled around his arms as he met the weapon head-on.
BOOM!
A violent shockwave surged outward as their clash cratered the ground. Dante's boots dug deep into the fractured earth as he glared at the beast, gritting his teeth.
Before the ogre could retreat, a rain of sharpened earthen spikes came hurtling down from above. The monster was forced to halt its escape, blocking the barrage with its massive sword.
Then—WHAM!—Dante lunged sideways, the terrain beneath him shifting like liquid as he dodged another crushing blow.
The ogre's sword struck the ground with a seismic impact, sending rubble flying as it stumbled from the missed swing.
"You good, Charl?" Dante shouted, shooting a quick glance toward her.
Charlotte grunted in frustration, dancing backward atop a narrow tide of water as the ogre before her launched another devastating slash.
She narrowly avoided the blade, but not without a price—her cheek was grazed, and a thin line of blood trailed down her face.
"Do I look okay to you?!" she snapped, eyes blazing with fury.
"Right," Dante muttered under his breath. With a snap of his fingers, four enormous earth boulders levitated high above him. His ogre was now twirling its blade, preparing another charge.
With another sharp gesture, the boulders crashed down like meteors. The ogre leapt just in time, evading the deadly impact as the shockwaves boomed through the arena, flinging debris and dust into the air.
"Tsk," Dante hissed, annoyed. "Then let's try this…"
He raised a hand.
"Sink."
The terrain around the ogre—spanning ten meters—instantly liquefied into a thick, muddy trap. It was like a quicksand pit, sucking everything downward.
The ogre roared as it began to sink rapidly, unable to react in time. Only its massive head remained above the surface, eyes wide in panic.
"Harden."
The mud instantly solidified.
CRACK!
The hardened earth gripped the ogre's body in an iron embrace, decapitating it as its massive head popped free and rolled across the battlefield.
"You should be thankful," Dante said with a twisted grin. "I gave you a proper burial. Sort of."
"Uhm—a little help here?!" Charlotte screamed.
Dante turned to see her barely dodging a vertical slash meant to cleave her in two. Her movement was fluid, surfing across a wave of water that shimmered beneath her feet, but the ogre's sword clipped the ends of her hair.
She retaliated with a flurry of slicing water blades, but the monster casually intercepted each one, parrying with its massive sword as if swatting away insects.
"I thought you had it under control!" Dante teased.
Charlotte shot backward again on her tide, frowning deeply. "We don't have time for your jokes."
"Fine, have it your way!"
Her body began to glow with power. Her violet hair floated around her like tendrils of fire. She ducked a final swing and then twisted her body with purpose.
"Water Creation Magic: Leviathan."
A thunderous bang echoed across the battlefield.
A colossal serpent of churning water burst forth from Charlotte's arms, roaring as it coiled through the air. The ogre had no time to react—no chance to block. The leviathan slammed into it like a tidal tsunami.
BOOOOOOM!
The creature was torn apart mid-air. Its body shredded into bloody mist as the attack continued, crashing into a cluster of ogres and slamming them all into the arena's far wall with a thunderous impact.
The ground quaked from the blow.
Panting hard, Charlotte bent over with her hands on her knees. Sweat clung to her brow as her gaze flicked to the stone enclosure where Grey lay.
Still breathing. Still safe.
"See?" Dante smirked. "You didn't need my help."
Charlotte didn't reply at first, only straightened and glared at the skies above.
"The battle's not over," she muttered, eyes narrowing.
A long, chilling howl echoed across the arena—followed by guttural growls.
More beasts were coming.
And they were different.
