Marvel 1919 : Rise of an Empire

Chapter 161: Blinded by Greed

The Triskelion, Conference Room

The Security Council meeting proceeded smoothly that morning. Individual Council members raised serious objections. After all, no one had attempted consciousness uploading before, and the potential dangers exceeded anyone's imagination. Still, the proposal moved forward.

Howard Stark's eloquence and persuasive arguments swayed everyone. They ultimately agreed to proceed with the consciousness uploading experiment.

George asked only a few technical questions during the meeting. He neither expressed explicit support nor clearly agreed with the proposal. However, in the final vote, George cast an affirmative vote.

George wanted to observe the relationship between consciousness uploading and the human soul.

The experiment proceeded step by step under direct Security Council supervision. The entire consciousness transfer experiment plan, including all specialized equipment, was actually a preliminary research project developed by Dr. Zola himself.

Dr. Zola was secretly pushing the entire experiment forward from behind the scenes.

Why was Howard Stark so actively promoting this dangerous experiment? The reasoning wasn't difficult to understand.

From their extended cooperation, Howard Stark could see that Dr. Zola maintained significant reservations about S.H.I.E.L.D. This showed in their research results.

Dr. Zola's exceptional talent was evident to everyone, including Howard Stark himself. Even the Arc Reactor technology had adopted many of Dr. Zola's innovative ideas to create the finished product.

This influence was clear from the distinctive shape and design of the Arc Reactor.

Once Dr. Zola's complete memory was uploaded in digital form, it would place all his knowledge and secrets directly at the disposal of others. Howard would obtain vast amounts of information and inspiration from that preserved data.

As a shrewd businessman, how could Howard not be interested in such an opportunity?

Other Council members finally agreed to support the experiment for a simple reason. If the experiment succeeded and proved safe and reliable, it would represent a viable path to technological immortality.

No one would object to such possibilities.

Three months later

The experiment was conducted at the former New Jersey Recruit Training Base.

On the day of the experiment, Council members, including George, personally arrived to witness the proceedings.

In the adjacent sterile laboratory, an advanced helmet was positioned next to a specially designed chair. Countless colored wires connected the helmet to a massive computer system in the corner.

This visible setup was only a small part of the consciousness storage device. In the underground facility of this base, there was also a complete set of nearly 200,000 individual storage units, specifically designed to store Dr. Zola's entire memory.

Soon, the severely emaciated Dr. Zola was wheeled in on a medical wheelchair, then carefully transferred onto the experimental chair.

After numerous monitoring patches were attached to his frail body, Dr. Zola was secured to the experimental chair with leg restraints and handcuffs for safety.

Howard Stark approached the main computer and began conducting the final system checks.

After confirming there were no technical issues, Howard walked to the observation window. He addressed the assembled group: "Gentlemen, and Ladies, this is the first human consciousness uploading experiment in history. If this experiment succeeds, we will fundamentally change the world."

He paused. "Now, please remain completely quiet during the procedure."

Howard approached Dr. Zola, bent down close to him, and asked with concern, "Doctor, are you ready to proceed?"

"Yes, Howard, I don't have much time left in this body. Let's begin immediately," Dr. Zola replied, barely managing to lift his head.

Howard Stark nodded to Dr. Zola, then personally picked up the nearby helmet, carefully placed it on the scientist's head, and secured Dr. Zola's position.

Howard walked to the nearby control switch, glanced at the people observing outside the laboratory, and then, under Zola's expectant gaze, pressed the activation button.

With a sudden burst of electrical current, Dr. Zola, who had been weak just moments before, let out an agonizing scream.

Everyone present knew that this experiment had only two possible outcomes: complete success or total failure. There was no chance to start over or make adjustments.

No one called for a halt at this critical moment. On the nearby computer monitor, countless streams of garbled code refreshed like a digital waterfall.

After thirty tense seconds, the helmet suddenly emitted thick, acrid smoke, and the connecting wires sparked with dangerous flames.

Zola's agonized wailing stopped completely, and all the monitoring systems tracking Dr. Zola's physiology flatlined.

"Did it succeed?" someone whispered.

"Did it fail?" another voice asked.

A commotion erupted among the observers outside the laboratory.

Howard Stark immediately rushed to the chair and began calling out, "Dr. Zola? Dr. Zola? Can you hear me?"

A visibly nervous Howard began frantically checking the computer data and discovered that the previously prepared database was now completely filled with information.

After Howard's careful reconfirmation of the data, Howard finally declared the experiment a failure.

Although Dr. Zola's memory data had been preserved in the system, the initial goal of creating a living digital consciousness had not been achieved. It could only be considered a failed attempt.

In reality, the entire experiment, from George's enhanced perspective, presented a completely different scene.

The precise moment Dr. Zola's physiological data stopped, George detected the clear existence of Dr. Zola's departing soul.

Moreover, George's enhanced hearing also received urgent reports from Monday and the surveillance network, stating that a sophisticated data stream had attempted to bypass their digital interception.

Before the experiment had begun, George had instructed the artificial intelligence, Monday, and the monitoring network to establish a comprehensive firewall in the outer network to prevent any unauthorised data transmission.

According to George's prior instructions, Monday would modify the underlying code of that data stream, directly transforming it into an artificial intelligence under his complete control.

George still admired Zola's remarkable ingenuity.

]\\From what he could observe, Zola had used that so-called "consciousness transfer" device to enable the computer system to fully simulate all of his behavioural patterns and decision-making processes from his entire life.

It didn't matter whether the computer could actually think like a human. Simply simulating Zola's distinctive way of thinking and problem-solving was sufficient.

Zola's sophisticated equipment had developed an alternative form of artificial intelligence, whose future potential was no less impressive than Iron Man's famous Jarvis system.

In the original timeline, after Captain America had discovered this hidden location, it had been destroyed in an explosion. However, George could be certain that the artificial intelligence version of Zola had not disappeared during that destruction.

In this altered timeline, the artificial intelligence Zola had already been intercepted by George in advance, and it no longer had any chance to leave backup copies throughout the internet.

The entire experiment ended like this, and a failed experiment was not worth the five major Council nations spending their resources investigating further.

Because the data recorded many of Zola's memories in the underground storage facility, it was carefully preserved for future study.

That same night, HYDRA's embedded spies re-entered the facility using the login password and contacted what they believed was Zola, who had already taken the digital form controlled by Monday.

Perhaps HYDRA's operatives would never discover that their precious Zola had already been completely compromised at this point.

Upon returning to his castle, George began to thoroughly examine Zola's true database after it had been properly categorized and organized, revealing numerous advanced black technologies and classified research.

It was almost laughable that Howard Stark and the group of ambitious politicians supporting him, all dreaming of achieving immortality, had been completely blinded by their overwhelming greed.

If George hadn't prepared his countermeasures in advance, the artificial intelligence version of Zola would have become another true incarnation of HYDRA, an unkillable, digital HYDRA.

As for the real Dr. Zola, George directly resurrected him within the Chaos Space dimension. George also took the opportunity to sort through and organize his memories and thoughts.

Even if George chose not to modify his memory, given Dr. Zola's intense fear of death and his recent experience, he would never dare to betray George in the future.

After successfully resurrecting Zola, George transported him to Ancient Star and had him begin participating in the research of polymorphic genetic manipulation.

On this Earth, Dr. Zola's scientific intelligence was top-tier among all researchers.
