"Okay, see you tomorrow, and..."

Gwen hesitated before speaking to Peter on the other end of the phone: "Peter, it's really nice to be able to talk to you like this. I mean... after everything that happened today, it's a strange feeling."

After hanging up, Gwen sat on the sofa, gazing out at the rainy night. She exhaled deeply.

"Buzz~"

Her phone, which she had just set down, vibrated again. Gwen picked it up and saw that it was Liz calling.

She took a deep breath, adjusting her mood before answering, "Hi, Liz."

Gwen knew Liz and Glory were still in the hospital, but now she had to pretend she didn't know anything about it.

The sensation of wearing a mask made her feel as though she were schizophrenic.

"Where am I? Well, I'm at home. Yes, I haven't gone to sleep yet. I know about Kraven the Hunter. Are you at the hospital now?"

Gwen pretended to be genuinely surprised, "Oh my God! What happened? Are you okay?"

After Liz explained how they had gotten into a car accident while rushing to join in the action and assured Gwen that Glory was fine and had just fainted from the shock, Gwen comforted her and was about to end the call.

But then Liz's next words stopped her.

"Gwen, can I ask you something?"

"Of course, Liz."

"Do you know what it's like to be a superhero?"

Gwen was taken aback by the question. She thought for a moment before answering:

"I don't know... maybe it comes with some kind of responsibility, a heavy responsibility. After all, they face situations beyond the norm all the time."

After hanging up the phone, Gwen ran a hand through her messy blond hair.

So many things had happened today, and she felt confused.

Why would anyone want to become a superhero?

Is it the responsibility to protect the city, as her father had always taught her?

Though she also thought of it that way, she didn't feel so noble.

Her thoughts drifted to Peter.

Maybe... it's also because I want to be a hero.

"Crack!"

The door suddenly opened, interrupting her thoughts.

Her father, George Stacey, stepped into the room.

"Dad."

"Gwen?! You haven't gone to bed yet?" George was surprised to see Gwen sitting on the sofa.

"I was waiting for you to come home. There's so much going on outside."

"Indeed, there have been a lot of events at the police station lately. First, Spider-Man, then vampires, and now werewolves."

George sat down on the sofa, rubbing his forehead wearily. "It seems the 'special crime team' the mayor ordered is not pointless after all."

"Special crime team?" Gwen asked, confused.

"Yes, I'm the commander of this team, and Officer Frank Castle is the deputy leader. The purpose is to handle people like Spider-Man and Spider-Woman, as well as super-powered criminals who have been emerging lately."

Gwen nodded. "Like S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

"No, we're not agents," George said firmly. "I'm just a police officer."

"But..." Gwen hesitated. "Spider-Man and Spider-Woman aren't criminals, right? They've helped a lot of people. Spider-Man even stopped the subway. It doesn't seem fair to call them criminals."

George sighed. "Many people share your view, thinking they're heroes, but others believe they have no legal right to be out there. They act as vigilantes, and that's against the law. So, whether we include both Spider-Men on the list remains controversial."

"What do you think, Dad?"

Gwen met her father's gaze. "Would you arrest Spider-Woman yourself?"

"My opinion doesn't matter," George replied. "If it comes down to it, I have no choice. I am a policeman."

Gwen didn't speak further, her mood darkening.

The idea of being a superhero was overwhelming. You always had to face problems like this.

The next day.

News about the murder of Kraven the Hunter dominated the headlines.

The werewolf that attacked him, as well as the alien creature that subdued the werewolf, became the focal point of the news.

Hunters who hunt animals are eventually hunted by their prey, and with the appearance of legendary creatures like werewolves, along with a mysterious black figure full of murderous intent, the story had all the ingredients to captivate the public.

Inside the S.H.I.E.L.D. building.

When Cindy Moon entered the building, she overheard her colleagues discussing the latest news.

Carrying experimental materials, she headed to her arachnid biology lab.

"Hey, Cindy, did you hear about Kraven? He was killed by a werewolf, and another terrifying creature appeared."

One of her colleagues, a gossipy woman, couldn't resist sharing the day's biggest news.

"What creature?" Cindy asked, sounding indifferent.

"Some undiscovered creature, maybe even alien. I mean, after all, our astronauts encountered an alien recently."

The colleague mentioned the recent accident involving astronauts attacked by unknown forces in space. They barely managed to return to Earth, but some of them were seriously injured.

Cindy frowned at the mention of the alien encounter.

Once she entered her lab, she placed the experimental materials on the table.

Behind her, in the glass cabinet, various brightly colored spiders crawled slowly inside.

She turned to look at one of them, a bird-catching spider weaving its web. The white threads stretched toward the top of the cabinet.

The spider inside tried to weave silk to escape the trap.

Cindy flicked the glass lightly with a "click," knocking the spider away.

She had read about the news yesterday and knew Spider-Woman had fought unknown forces in the city.

She approached her desk and opened the file lying there.

The file wasn't about the arachnid creatures she was studying but about Spider-Woman.

She had been monitoring Gwen ever since her public appearance.

It was impossible to watch Gwen closely without also noticing Peter Parker, who was always by her side.

As for why Cindy kept an eye on Gwen, the reason was simple. Gwen was her experiment.

How could she not pay attention to her subject?

The spider in the photo she held was the one that bit Gwen.

It had been placed in the Natural History Museum by Cindy herself.

Originally, the spider belonged to S.H.I.E.L.D., but after the astronaut's alien encounter, Cindy had become the go-to expert on arachnid creatures.

The astronaut had been bitten by a spider and mutated. Cindy had extracted the mutant gene and experimented with other agents, eventually creating a genetically modified spider.

She had secretly stolen the spider from S.H.I.E.L.D. and placed it in the museum. It just so happened that Gwen was bitten.

This was perfect for Cindy's research.

Continuing to flip through the file, Cindy saw an image of Gwen swinging through the air, and for a brief moment, a trace of bitterness crossed her face.

If fate hadn't interfered, that should have been her.

She had encountered the alien spider when she was young.

As a child, she had been daydreaming at her desk when the strange spider landed on her hand.

She thought she would be bitten, but her teacher had slapped the newspaper onto her hand, causing the spider to flee.

If not for the teacher's timely intervention, Cindy would have been bitten, and her life might have turned out very differently.

Although the spider she created had similar abilities to the alien one, it was not the original.

She had experimented on other human subjects, but none had succeeded in being bittenโ€”except Gwen.

Gwen was the most unique of them all.

The alien spider's abilities manifested perfectly in her, without any side effects.

"You're talking about alien creatures, but you don't realize that the superheroes born from them have already appeared," Cindy muttered to herself, continuing to go through the files.

The remaining documents detailed what happened the previous night in the state park.

Kraven had been hunted by the werewolf, but the mysterious black killing machine had appeared and delivered the fatal blow to the werewolf.

"If I could get the genes of that creature..." Cindy thought of her colleague, Dr. Connors, who was studying the regenerative abilities of reptiles. Maybe this creature could inspire him.

"Dr. Aguilar, Director Fury wants to see you," a voice interrupted her thoughts.

A colleague told her that Director Nick Fury had requested her presence.

Cindy put down the file, locked it in the drawer, and stepped out.

She asked her colleague, "What does the director want to talk about?"

"Probably about the creatures that appeared last night. After all, you're the expert on this subject."

"I'm not much of an expert on mammals or reptiles. Maybe he'll send the level 8 and 9 agents. They're better for combat," Cindy replied, heading toward the director's office.
