Thud, thud, thud...
Clark and the others finished every drop of soup in their bowls, letting out a satisfied sigh.
"Awesome!"
Eric burped loudly and turned to Mike. "Dad, this tastes amazing! When I go to college, I won't get to eat this. What am I going to do?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Clark froze.
Right, what would he do?
After this summer, he would be heading off to college.
But what about him?
Maybe he could just come home for meals when it's time?
Clark thought with a somewhat desperate look on his face.
Mike chuckled, clearing the bowls and utensils. "Once all of you are gone, I'll finally get some peace."
The three groaned in unison.
Charles suddenly spoke in a mysterious tone. "By the way, Dad! You have no idea what happened tonight, do you?"
He winked at Clark as he finished his sentence.
Clark blinked, confused. "You guys?"
Eric patted Clark on the shoulder. "Nice dancing."
Clark's face turned red, and he couldn't help but think of the girl named Louise.
"Heh heh!" Charles laughed. "A girl danced with Clark! Dad, you didn't see that coming, did you?"
Mike coughed, walking towards the kitchen, and muttered in response.
He didn't even need to think about it.
Three silly kids, thinking he was still on the first floor. Little did they know, he was already on the fifth.
"Dad, your reaction is kinda weird," Charles said, eyeing Mike suspiciously.
Mike's eyelid twitched, and he paused for a moment before answering, "Weird? What's weird about it?"
"Normally, when you hear something like that, you should be excited, gossiping, and asking who the girl is, right?"
This clever kid!
Mike thought to himself, cursing silently, but he kept his composure and replied coolly, "With Clark's looks, it's normal for a girl to ask him to dance. Why would I be surprised? It's you I'm worried about—getting all worked up over something so small."
"Haha!" Eric laughed, mocking Charles.
After a brief pause, Mike turned to Clark. "So, what's the girl's name?"
Charles and Eric eagerly waited for an answer as well.
Clark stood up, frowning. "It was just a dance. I didn't ask her name. I'm going to bed."
With that, Clark quickly headed upstairs.
Charles and Eric shrugged.
Mike twitched the corner of his mouth.
The kid's lying now.
Not ask for her name...
Mike walked toward the kitchen while calling out to Charles and Eric, "Go to bed, both of you."
The two playfully tussled their way up the stairs.
Once they were out of sight, Mike finally let out a sigh of relief.
They couldn't find out about this. It would stay with him forever.
---
Due to the terrifying incident at school yesterday, and with only a few days left in the semester, the school decided to extend the summer break.
And that meant Clark had officially graduated.
The three kids decided to go on a trip together.
That's right, just the three of them—no Mike.
Mike watched as the three of them excitedly discussed their plans, his forehead twitching with frustration.
Once the discussion was over, Mike crossed his arms and sneered at them. "A trip? Do you guys have money?"
The three stared at him, wide-eyed.
Charles grinned and said, "Dad, you're going to give us some, right?"
"Heh."
Mike sneered, "Dream on. You'll figure it out yourselves."
"No way!" Eric's eyes grew wide. "Dad, are you really this cold-hearted?"
Clark asked with confusion, "Wait, do you want us to take you with us?"
"You guys take me?" Mike scoffed, tapping his pocket. "What a joke! I've got money, and I can go wherever I want! I don't need you to take me."
The three stood there for a moment...
Yeah, he has a point!
"Ahem!"
Charles rubbed his face and said, "Uh... Dad, how about you take us on the trip?"
"No way," Mike shook his head. "Go get a job, make some money. The vacation's long enough."
"Oh, right! You guys just reminded me." Mike slapped his forehead. "Tomorrow, I'm going on a trip, and you three are going to work. When you earn enough money, then you can go on your trip."
The three were left stunned.
Mike smirked coldly as he walked out of the room, breathing a sigh of relief.
He truly does what he says—let's see what these three kids do when the time comes!
Inside the house, the three of them stared at each other, all feeling a headache coming on.
"Dad seems really angry," Eric said, a little worried.
Clark rested his chin in his hand. "It's fine, we just need to give him some space. He needs time for dates—if he doesn't find someone soon, no one will want him."
Eric nodded gravely and then turned to Charles. "Why aren't you saying anything?"
Charles scratched his chin thoughtfully. "I'm trying to figure out how we can make money quickly."
Clark spoke sternly, "You better not use your abilities for this!"
Charles waved him off as he continued thinking aloud. "I didn't need you to say that. Dad would beat me if he found out."
"And stop interrupting! I had an idea just now, and now I've forgotten it."
Clark and Eric exchanged glances, both curious as they focused on Charles.
After a moment, Charles's eyes lit up, and he leaned in to whisper his idea to the other two.
Clark and Eric exchanged glances. It seemed... possible?
The three nodded in agreement, deciding they'd start their plan tomorrow after Mike had left.
Outside, Mike waited for a while, but when the three didn't come out, he scratched his head and sighed softly.
The kids had really grown up. They were starting to think for themselves.
He felt a little disappointed.
But, it was just a phase.
It had been a long time since he'd been alone...
Mike smiled to himself. He had already planned out his trip in his head.
"Heh heh!"
---
The next day, Mike left the three boys behind and headed to the airport. Before his flight took off, he gave them a call. The three assured him that they'd soon have enough money and would set off on their own trip.
Mike chuckled. "Good luck, kids!"
With that, he hung up the phone and looked out the window.
Just then...
"Hey? Mike!"
A surprised voice rang out, and Mike's face instantly changed.
No way. No way!
He turned his head stiffly and saw a man smiling warmly, someone who looked like a good-natured guy, staring right at him.
Well, this description… Mike had used it before.
If there was one difference, it was that the man's hairline had receded even further, making him look more dangerous than ever.
"Colson."
Mike's smile became stiff.
Colson looked at the seat next to him. "What a coincidence! We meet again, and my seat is right next to yours."
What coincidence!
Mike nodded with a smile, but inside, he was already calculating whether or not he should throw Colson off the plane.
"Mike, are you heading to Hawaii?" Colson asked.
Mike's eyelid twitched, and his mouth twitched in response. "No, I'm planning to jump out of the plane in a bit."
Colson: "?"
