Two days later.
Skrrrt!
With the screech of tires against the ground, a black stretch Chrysler pulled up at the factory entrance. Logan shoved open the car door and rushed inside in a hurry—only to freeze.
He could hear cheerful voices.
Charles, Caliban… and two other very familiar voices.
Striding forward, he appeared before the group.
Charles and Caliban were laughing happily—and sitting with them were Mike and Gwen?
Logan's face hardened. "Why are you here?"
"You approached us with an agenda, didn't you? What do you want?"
His voice grew more and more heated.
And to think—he had mistaken these two for good people.
Charles waved at him. "They're friends. We've been together for two days now."
Logan's eyes grew colder. He turned his gaze toward Caliban.
Caliban gave a hesitant nod.
Seeing this, Logan let out a low snarl, and his adamantium claws slid out from between his knuckles.
Like an old wolf preparing for one last desperate fight.
Mike sighed and said sincerely, "I mean you no harm. If I did, you wouldn't have found them alive when you got back. And if I really wanted to act, you couldn't stop me anyway."
The moment his words fell, Mike vanished from sight.
An instant later, he reappeared—his hand gripping Logan—before shooting straight into the air.
Crash!
The roof exploded open as rubble clattered down.
"Cough, cough!"
Caliban waved away the dust at his nose and muttered nervously, "They're not going to kill each other, are they?"
Another ability? The thought chilled him.
"Geez!" Gwen groaned. "Didn't we already say we mean no harm?"
"Exactly! Exactly!" Charles chimed in happily, still gnawing on a chicken leg.
Caliban: "…"
Whose side are you on, anyway?
At that moment, a young girl with long black hair stepped inside.
She was about Gwen's age, but her wary eyes and feral aura set her apart from ordinary children.
Yet when her gaze landed on Charles, the tension in her eyes eased slightly.
"Laura!"
Charles exclaimed in delight.
Laura pursed her lips, avoided Caliban's stare, then curiously locked eyes with Gwen before stepping to Charles's side.
Caliban was stunned. "A mutant?"
His ability wasn't just tracking—he could also sense mutants within a certain range.
"Yes. She's the new mutant I've been telling you about," Charles said as he took Laura's hand and pulled her closer.
"Are you hungry?"
Laura nodded.
Charles handed her a set of utensils. "Don't be shy. Eat."
Laura silently picked them up.
"Hi, I'm Gwen Kent," Gwen said warmly, extending a hand with a friendly smile.
Laura cast her a brief glance, then lowered her head and ate.
Gwen blinked, scratching her cheek in mild embarrassment.
A cold, aloof big sister type.
"Wait a second!"
Caliban's eyes widened at Laura. "How did she get here? Why is she here?"
"I told you—her name is Laura," Charles muttered, sliding a plate of meat toward her.
Laura's eyes lit up. With knife and fork flying, she practically buried herself in the plate.
Just then—
Whoosh!
Two figures descended from above, widening the hole in the roof even further.
Mike looked at Logan—who had retracted his claws—and straightened his collar with a smile. "Looks like you understand now."
Logan stood frozen, then gave a stiff nod.
He understood.
If Mike had truly wanted to harm them, they would never have stood a chance.
Logan turned, and his eyes fell on Laura devouring her food. His face paled. "Hell! What are you doing here?"
Two days earlier, Logan had taken on a job.
When he arrived, he discovered the employer was a woman named Gabriela. He had refused at first.
But then she offered a price far too tempting to ignore.
With that money, he could finally take Charles away from all this.
After thinking it over, he reluctantly accepted the risky job—to deliver the girl Gabriela spoke of.
But the next day, when he went to meet her, Gabriela was already dead—leaving behind only a cellphone.
More trouble had found him.
Realizing this, he had rushed back immediately.
But never in his worst fears did he imagine the "troublesome girl" would be sitting right here before him.
Logan's pupils shrank as he suddenly recalled the faint noises he had heard from the car's trunk on the drive back.
Did she sneak in while he was meeting Gabriela?
"You've met her already?"
Charles looked at Logan curiously, then said, "Her name is Laura."
"I don't care what her name is! She has to leave! She'll bring us nothing but trouble!" Logan roared, reaching out to grab her.
Laura looked up, bared her teeth at him, and clutched her plate tightly—her eyes clearly saying, Come any closer and I'll bite you.
Charles maneuvered his wheelchair between them. "You can't say that about Laura. She's just a child who needs help!"
"Damn it, you don't know what she represents!"
Logan snapped, slamming a business card onto the table.
Caliban picked it up and read aloud in a low voice: "Alkali Genetic Modification Research Institute, Security Chief Donald Pierce."
"She's from the Alkali Institute?"
His voice trembled with tension.
"No! Don't just look at where she came from. What matters is where she wants to go," Charles tried to reason.
"I don't care!" Logan's tone was ice. "She escaped from them. They won't stop until they get her back! We can't get involved—this is needless trouble!"
"Logan, you've really disappointed me!" Charles glared at him in anger.
Logan said flatly, "Wouldn't be the first time."
With that, he moved behind Charles. "We need to leave. That bastard put a tracker on my car—they'll be here soon."
"No! We're taking Laura with us!" Charles shouted.
"Stop it! What can we even do right now?" Logan barked back, lowering his voice to a furious growl.
Charles was silent for a moment, then said, "But now we have friends to help us."
He glanced meaningfully at Mike and Gwen.
At that instant, Mike's eyes flickered, and he warned calmly, "You have visitors."
Logan's face darkened. He strode outside at once.
As soon as he left, the others' eyes shifted to Laura.
She continued eating calmly.
Even as Logan and Charles argued over her, her face showed no change—like none of it concerned her at all.
Seeing this, Gwen couldn't help but whisper in awe, "So cool."
Mike flicked Gwen lightly on the forehead with a smile. "Daddy prefers your sweetness over being cool."
"Heehee!" Gwen giggled, rubbing her nose happily.
At that moment, Laura—still eating—let slip a faint, almost hidden flicker of envy in her eyes.
Just then, the sound of raised voices erupted outside, followed by sudden silence.
Seconds later, Logan rushed back in, wordlessly pushing Charles's wheelchair toward the exit.
Caliban hurried after them.
