Chapter 159: Chapter 155. Waiting Game
Noah pondered how Nick Fury could place his trust in such potentially dangerous beings as the Skrulls, allowing them to reside on Earth while making empty promises. After all, as the saying goes, "outsiders will always remain outsiders."
However, Fury didn't seem to grasp the full extent of the threat. Besides the Skrulls already on Earth, millions of their brethren roamed the cosmos, ready to respond to a signal and descend upon Earth at any moment.
In "Secret Invasion," Talos, disillusioned by Fury's failure to fulfill his decades-old promise of finding a new planet for the Skrulls, and further disheartened by Fury's absence while secluded on the S.W.O.R.D. orbital platform, decided to summon his wandering brethren to Earth. This drastically increased the Skrull population on the planet to over a million.
Although Talos himself harbored no hostile intentions towards humanity, his primary goal was to provide a safe haven for his displaced people. However, not all Skrulls shared his peaceful aspirations. Gravik, for instance, was a prime example.
Gravik, who had admired Nick Fury since childhood for aiding the Skrulls and saving their race, grew increasingly disillusioned as he realized Fury hadn't kept his promises. This led him down a dark path, plotting to infiltrate Earth's highest echelons of power, sow chaos, and seize control of the planet.
Noah believed that unless you possessed the absolute power to control such dangerous elements, it was best to avoid any involvement with them altogether. Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't seem to understand this, which ultimately led to numerous problems.
He even attributed some of the blame to Carol Danvers, better known as Captain Marvel. She was the one who initially promised to find a new planet for the Skrulls, and yet, decades later, she seemed to have forgotten her promise. As a result, Fury and Earth bore the brunt of the consequences.
Now, Noah decided to keep a closer watch on the Skrulls. If events unfolded as they did in "Secret Invasion," and a million aliens arrived on Earth, the situation could quickly spiral out of control. The Skrulls' shapeshifting abilities posed the greatest threat. They could disguise themselves as anyone, and current human technology couldn't detect them. Ultimately, if an invasion occurred, he would once again be left to deal with the aftermath.
Recalling that Nick Fury was in Russia when he called, Noah suspected that's where the Skrulls were located. He decided that upon returning, he should track Fury's movements and, when he had the time, go there for reconnaissance to locate the Skrull camp. He hadn't yet determined his next course of action and decided to consider it later.
"So, here's the situation," Fury said, standing before the round table, leaning on it with both hands. "Hydra is still unaware that we know about them. I've already dispatched several specially trained agents with state-of-the-art disguises to infiltrate their organization and gather more information."
"But we still don't know the exact size of their forces or their potential allies outside of S.H.I.E.L.D. The Hydra agents we captured didn't have high-level access."
Using the "Memory Extractor" hadn't yielded any new information either, confirming that the prisoners genuinely didn't know anything substantial. This is why he sent the Skrulls to infiltrate Hydra's ranks.
"And what are you going to do next?" Steve Rogers asked, having listened attentively to all the details. The situation was clearly complicated. Hydra had likely been embedded within S.H.I.E.L.D. for a long time, and if they tried to strike now, the consequences could be catastrophic.
"My plan is to avoid any overt action for now. We'll wait and gather information from our agents until we're certain we can take down Hydra in one fell swoop," Fury replied, outlining his intentions.
In fact, many in the room shared his thoughts. Hydra was still unaware that they had been exposed, giving S.H.I.E.L.D. an advantage. They could secretly gather information, identify all the Hydra agents hidden within the organization, and then launch a surprise attack, completely disrupting the enemy's plans.
"If you're not planning to act, why did you call me here?" Noah asked, sprawling in his chair and spreading his arms.
Captain America, Steve Rogers, also looked at Fury questioningly. He, too, wanted to understand why they had both been invited to this meeting.
"To prevent future crises, we need to be proactive, and that's what I excel at. Hydra is too dangerous an enemy to ignore, and we must be prepared. I gathered you here so you could begin your preparations. When the time comes, we'll need your help," Fury replied. Anticipating threats had always been his job, even before he became the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
"But why didn't you call Tony Stark then? Isn't he part of your plan?" Noah asked. He thought Tony would be here too, but it seemed Fury hadn't invited him.
Steve's ears perked up at the familiar name. He remembered having a friend named Stark. He had heard that this Tony Stark was his old friend's son. Steve was essentially Tony's uncle, but they hadn't met yet. Ironically, his "nephew" was now older than him.
"Tony Stark is currently under close scrutiny by numerous agencies, so I can't just call him in. When the time is right, I'll tell him about Hydra myself."
"And what about Captain America? Are you sure Hydra isn't watching him? After all, he's the one who defeated them once."
Steve looked intently at Fury. If Hydra was indeed watching his home, their plan could be exposed.
"Don't worry, I took care of that in advance," Fury reassured him. "Before sending anyone to pick up Steve, I asked Talos to replace him. A Skrull who had already seen Steve assumed his appearance, so no one noticed him leaving his home."
"Alright. That's all. I think we can conclude for today," Fury announced the end of the meeting. It had already lasted about an hour, and his throat was dry from talking so much.
However, before leaving, he caught Noah, who was about to wander around the base, clearly intending to discuss something with him in private.
