Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Going To Kamar-Taj
New York Sanctum
Inside a quiet chamber, Mordo sat in deep meditation. Ever since the day Kurogai had seized control of his mind, Mordo had felt humiliated—and challenged. In the days since, he had immersed himself in relentless training, determined never to be caught off guard again.
A monk entered, bowing slightly. "Master Mordo, the boy with the strange eyes has returned."
"What? He actually dared to come back?" Mordo's eyes snapped open, a flash of anger beneath his calm expression. The audacity of Kurogai returning here stirred something dark in him.
"Lead the way," Mordo growled, rising to his feet. He moved swiftly toward the Sanctum's main hall, eager to confront the boy who had once humiliated him.
---
In the grand hall of the New York Sanctum, Kurogai stood calmly, admiring the mystical relics and symbols around him. His gaze was casual, yet focused—he wasn't here to linger.
Not long after, Mordo stormed in.
"Long time no see, Mordo," Kurogai said smoothly, flashing a subtle grin. "Told you we'd meet again."
Mordo's jaw clenched. He hadn't forgotten how Kurogai had once taken control of him like a puppet. That memory burned.
"What are you doing here?" Mordo snapped. "You don't belong here."
He wanted nothing more than to blast Kurogai out of the Sanctum with raw magic—but he couldn't. The Sanctum had rules. Violence within its walls was forbidden unless faced with a direct threat.
"I need to use the portal to Kamar-Taj," Kurogai said plainly, his tone devoid of hesitation.
There were only two ways to reach Kamar-Taj—one, by trekking across continents to reach Kathmandu. The other? Use the portal here in the New York Sanctum. Kurogai had no interest in the former.
Mordo scoffed. "Absolutely not. The Sorcerer Supreme made it clear—you're not welcome. You will not become a sorcerer, and I won't let you near that portal. Leave."
He crossed his arms, ready for confrontation.
Kurogai simply smiled. "Exactly what I expected you'd say. That's why I came prepared."
Mordo's eyes narrowed. The smug tone in Kurogai's voice put him on high alert. His hands moved instinctively, conjuring magical sigils in the air. A fiery aura flickered around him as a glowing shield began to take shape.
"I won't let you control me again," Mordo said firmly, bracing himself.
After their last encounter, he'd studied Kurogai's mysterious powers—especially that bizarre eye of his. From what he'd gathered, Kurogai could only use that particular power once on any given person. Still, he wasn't taking chances.
"I never said I was going to control you," Kurogai replied, casually watching the magic circle form. He looked... curious, not combative.
Mordo eased just slightly, wary but not sensing immediate danger. Maybe this time would be different.
Crack.
A dull thud echoed in the room. Mordo staggered as pain flared at the back of his head. His vision blurred. Turning slightly, he saw the same monk who'd warned him earlier—now holding a wooden staff.
And in the monk's eyes... a faint red glow.
"You misunderstood," Kurogai said softly. "I never said I'd control you. I planned to control someone else."
Mordo collapsed.
---
Kurogai turned to the monk and gave a simple order:
"Take me to the portal. Open it."
The monk bowed silently and led him through the inner halls of the Sanctum. Soon, they arrived at a tall, rune-etched archway. With a few practiced movements, the monk activated the spellwork, and the portal shimmered to life.
Kurogai's eyes glinted with fascination. Even with his ever-growing power, spatial magic still intrigued him. Through the portal, he saw a stone chamber—one he knew to be the central nexus of Kamar-Taj.
Without hesitation, Kurogai stepped through.
---
Kamar-Taj
He emerged into the heart of Kamar-Taj, surrounded by ancient stone and incense-filled air. The architecture was quiet, mystical—almost sacred. Unlike the towering modern chaos of New York, Kamar-Taj carried a calm, timeless atmosphere.
Kurogai stepped outside into the open courtyard. Solid wooden buildings surrounded him—old, elegant, and alive with quiet power. The environment was unlike anything in the West. Even the air felt different.
"So this is it," he murmured. "Portals really are something else. I need to learn that magic."
That was one of the reasons he came here—not just for power, but for convenience. Magic like this? It could make anything possible.
As he wandered the grounds, taking in the details, he spotted her.
A bald woman in a flowing white robe sat in quiet meditation, reading a tome in the inner hall.
The Ancient One.
Kurogai's expression remained unreadable, but his eyes gleamed with purpose. This meeting had been a long time coming.
