Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Echoes of Power

Chinatown always held an air of mystery, with its twisting alleys and hidden corners where stories lingered like the scent of incense.

After Shang-Chi left, James felt a surge of light blue cosmic energy envelop him, centering on the chalice nearby. The chalice, infused with that energy, floated gently to his lips, pouring the cool water into his mouth drop by drop. As he swallowed, he felt a warmth spreading through his body; his injuries began to heal at an astonishing rate.

Outside the door, Clarice waited anxiously. "Shang-Chi, how is James?" she asked, her voice tinged with worry.

Shang-Chi knelt down, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "James is going to be just fine. He needs his rest right now, though. Let him recuperate without interruption, alright?"

Inside the orphanage, James bid farewell to Mother Hana, who expressed her gratitude profusely. "You've done so much for us, James. I can't thank you enough."

"It was nothing, really," Shang-Chi interjected, shrugging off the praise. "James and I connected right away. It was my pleasure to help."

Mother Hana's expression shifted as she asked, "By the way, has Doctor Wang returned? He's been gone for some time now."

Shang-Chi shook his head. "I heard he went to the Middle East. I haven't heard anything since."

Worry flickered across Mother Hana's face. "The Middle East? It can be a dangerous place. Even Mr. Stark went missing there."

Despite his reputation, Stark had been a benefactor to the orphanage, so Mother Hana was careful with her words. "Wang is resourceful; he'll be fine," Shang-Chi assured her, though a hint of concern lingered in his eyes. He'd seen too many things that shouldn't be in a traditional Chinese medicine hall, things that made him question the path he had chosen.

When James finally woke up, the sun had dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows through the windows. He flexed his limbs, grateful for the chalice's healing properties. Although it wasn't perfectly aligned with his abilities, it had proven invaluable. In moments of crisis, it had saved him.

After spending another night at the orphanage at Mother Hana's insistence, he returned home, making a beeline for the attic. The Zodiac box sat there, still looking as forlorn as when he last saw it—a stark contrast to the brilliant light it had once emitted.

James approached it cautiously, extending a hand to touch its surface. He settled into a cross-legged position, a sense of anticipation building within him. Yet, the cosmic energy that had once surged through him was absent, leaving the box silent and still.

This box had transformed into a suit of silver armor during their last encounter, and the chalice had emerged from it. Now, it seemed to have reverted to being just an ordinary bronze box, but he needed to verify that.

"Was this a one-time treasure?" he wondered aloud. "Could it return to its former state, like a Dragon Ball that turns back into stone?"

If it could only be opened under specific conditions, what might they be? Did it require time to recharge, or was it dependent on a specific event? Would he need to summon someone like Pope Shion again to activate it?

Determined to find out, James descended to grab an angle grinder. He rigged it up and turned it on, the grinding wheel spinning with ferocious energy.

With a mix of excitement and trepidation, he pressed the spinning wheel against the edge of the box. Sparks flew, illuminating the dim attic. Despite his strength, the grinding wheel met resistance, refusing to leave a mark on the box's surface.

After the sparks settled and the dust cleared, he saw no scratches on the box. Meanwhile, the grinding wheel had worn down significantly.

"Just as I thought," he murmured, a grin spreading across his face. "This box hasn't turned into an ordinary bronze box. It's still special."

James's heart raced with newfound hope. This box must be a sustainable resource, a treasure that could be accessed again under the right circumstances.

"What kind of conditions? I need to figure this out," he mused, scratching his head.

Deciding to take action, he retrieved the chalice and rested it against his body, settling back down in front of the box.

"Open up, box! Let's see what you've got!"

He felt ready to unlock the mysteries that lay ahead, driven by a determination to understand his newfound abilities and the potential that awaited him.
