Chapter 86: The Hunting
"Director. Why do you look exhausted suddenly?" Tanjiro asked, sensing my expression wrong.
"I'm fine. It's just some random memory that keeps entering my head." I answered.
"What kind of memory enters your head?" Tanjiro asked, feeling slightly curious.
"A boy gets hit by a truck and dies in front of me. The worst thing is that I have watched this many times with a slight difference."
"Should I worry about it?" Tanjiro asked, concerned about my situation.
"Not at all. I will forget it one day. Just like a dream. You will forget when you wake up." I rubbed my temples.
"By the way, how is the interrogation going?"
"No process at all." Tanjiro pressed the limbless demon into the ground. He put so much force that the ground started cracking.
"We don't have much time so let me do it." I grabbed his neck, lifted him, and shouted.
"I hear from the other guy that your lord bestows grace on you," I said calmly.
"Oh. I wonder which guy told you about that"
"Don't know his name. If I want to ask him, it's already too late to ask him." I remembered a demon that I caught in the sewer.
To make him vomit all the information, I stuffed 100 drugs of enhancing sensitivity into his stomach and shot him continuously. Not letting him have a proper moment to rest and recover.
It was a pity that he chose to end his life by running into the sunlight.
But that guy chose death instead of saying anything. So no information was collected at all.
I lied to him in the hope of breaking his wall. But the result told the difference.
"Then he must be a traitor. When we first discover him, we are already his loyal subordinates. Only selfish and coward one that sold him out."
"But me," He stared deeply into my pupils. He could see his reflection in my pupils.
"Will never do that."
His limbs recovered at a fast rate. His legs lunged into the ground and he hurled a powerful punch into my face.
A loud sound echoed across the space. Seeing his attack ineffective, he swung another punch.
He kept attacking me until I responded with a fist straightening to his chest.
A punch pierced his chest and blood ran out of it like a fountain. I didn't stop.
Punch after punch. All the attacks aimed to break all the bones.
His bones were shattered into many crumbs. For a moment, he felt he completely lost control of his body.
"Even we are an enemy, but I like your spirit." My hands reached out for the gun hanging on my waist.
Seeing me draw a gun to end his life, a smile bloomed on his face. In the face of death, he laughed at it.
"What do you think you are? A demon slayer. Or human's protector. No. No. You are wrong. You are just a clown in a funny design suit."
"Yes. A clown. But. One that brings a great nightmare to your idol." I smiled back.
I hit him with a gun and pointed at his forehead.
"Let's do a favor for me, okay? "
"I know you are stubborn like a stone" I paused before continuing "All I want is that you say a magical word."
"Why do I have to say that unnecessary thing?" His smile disappeared from his face. He asked, feeling confused about the intention behind my action.
"Do it or eat this copper bullet" The muzzle pressed into his forehead.
Seeing my desperate action, his smile came back and was wider than before.
"Fine, you will die anyway. So why not entertain you before you face your doom." He chuckled, "And what is that magical word."
"It's the name of a person. His name is Muzan. I only want you to say his name."
"Oh. Are you trying to kill me with this boring name?" He titled his head.
His mouth opened and pronounced the word 'Muzan' slowly and clearly.
1 second… 5 seconds… 15 seconds…
Nothing happened to him.
"That's sucked" I mumbled.
"Me too. I don't feel anything but empty. You succeed in killing me with boring stuff."
Normally, if a demon says that name or mentions him in another way, he will be killed instantly by Muzan's command cells in the most brutal way.
"Don't make such a long face like that. I satisfy your request and you should be happy."
The demon tried to move his body. He could feel the tiny movement on the tip of the finger. What he needed was time.
"Look at me. Do you see the word 'happy' written on my face?" I knocked his teeth out of his mouth and pouted angrily, "Please don't bully me like that. I am just a delicate girl with a weak heart."
He rolled his eyes.
Delicate girl and a weak heart.
He looked behind me. A mountain of corpses was piled up by my hands.
"Like hell, I believe that."
A demon lunged at Tanjiro from the shadow. I quickly shot at his head.
A loud gunshot rang out and the scream added to that sound.
"Nice shoot. I hope your toy can help you when the time comes." The demon on my hand didn't forget to roast me. Quickly, a claw protruded and he slashed at my neck.
I blocked with one hand and pointed the gun's muzzle at the demon's head again.
"Although your poor cooperation doesn't give me a good impression, it's still nice to meet you. Cya."
I pulled the trigger and his head exploded like a watermelon.
"We don't gain anything useful from him. Waste of time." I said while looking at the demon which was slowly reduced to ash.
"So our effort is gone to waste. Do you want to move to another area to search? I believe the next location will be the last one." Tanjiro cleaned his sword. Next to him was the fuming corpses which were slowly reduced to ash.
"No. It should be this place"
Out of nowhere, the demon lunged at me interrupting the conversation. I grabbed his mouth and threw him to the ground. Looking at his bloody mouth, I raised my fist and punched through his head. The floor below him cracked into a spider web.
"Why do you believe so?" Tanjiro asked.
"Although he doesn't tell me anything useful, that can't prevent me from seeing through his terrible acting." I said and added, "The Drum demon, Kyogai, is here without a doubt."
"How can we find him, director? I can't smell his scent." Tanjiro asked me.
"Tanjiro. For a being like a demon, we don't need to take the initiative to find them. Instead, we make them come to us. They are just an arrogant idiot."
"I understand. So how can we lure him to come to us?" Tanjiro continued asking.
"That's a good question. I remember he was an unsuccessful novelist. So we need to provoke him by criticizing his novel or laughing at his pitiful past. In other words, we just rub salt into his past wound."
Having decided what to do next, I took out a loudspeaker and a micro.
"1 … 2 … 3… Test mic."
"Here. Take this." I passed it to Tanjiro.
"Heh. Why me."
"This is the basic knowledge in hunting. We must know what the prey likes, hates, its habit, food, and personality." I stopped in the middle and continued the explanation "The prey we hunt today is Drum Demon and you are the one who nearly killed him. So you are the perfect person for this task. Now read the script that I send to you."
The interface popped up in the air.
Tanjiro nodded and stepped forward.
Reading the script in the interface, Tanjiro said out loud.
"Greetings, Kyogai. I believe you remember me and want to kill me. And I know you are watching me from somewhere. Probably in the sewer where only rats live and hide."
The sharp wind mixing with dust blew past.
"I know you and your failure."
The word 'failure' reverberated powerfully in the space. The wind howled fiercely and harshly as if to convey his anger.
"This is a hard truth that you can't deny. You know it more than me, don't you."
"Anyway, I know you were once a lower moon. But that day doesn't last long. Your strength became weaker and the demon that you judged as a weakling now treated you the same you treated them before."
The wind was rustling with dust and sand.
I could feel the anger infusing in the wind.
I watched Tanjiro speaking the rest of the script while constantly checking the surroundings.
My sweeping eyes stopped at the shadow standing on the top of the lamp pole 10 km away.
With micro-lens in my eyes, I could see the target. Also, I could see his no so happy expression.
"Also, your novel sucks. I read them and understand why your novel is underrated. It's just an old story with an old plot. I think I may die if I read it again."
As soon as Tanjiro said this, a thunder stroke at the place where Tanjiro stood.
I quickly pulled him which saved him one life.
In the shadow, many red dots appeared and stared menacingly.
"Look, Tanjiro. You become their idol. You have the talent to become a comedian who specializes in bad-mouthing other people's lives." I joked but Tanjiro didn't feel funny.
Just approximating the number from the red dots, Tanjiro assumed there were about 1,000 demons. This was the first time he faced this number of demons.
"Look. They are coming for you. You should go and give them a handshake service."
"Also. Can you hear that? They are calling your name." I talked to Tanjiro.
"Look. Is it him? The one that our lord wants to kill."
"Yes, that stupid face. I won't forget even if it's the end of the world."
"If I offer his head, doesn't that mean my lord will give me his blood more?"
"His head is mine. No one is allowed to touch it."
"Yeh, you are very well known in demon society." I joked lightly.
"Director. Please don't joke right now. We face the army of demons."
"Do you think I am scared of them? We also have our army." My finger pointed to the sky.
Tanjiro followed the direction of my finger and saw many tiny dots shining in the sky. It became larger with each second pass. If his eyes didn't deceive him, those tiny dots were heading towards him.
A metallic cabin landed beside him creating a dust scene.
The door opened and the smoke scene poured out from inside. A metallic collision echoed and a line of red dots brightened.
Each step was heavy and lousy. A metal foot stepped into the light.
"TF2 Robot is ready in service." A robot came and reported.
It was a robot that Tanjiro saw in the base.
"Greetings, Soldier. We have an enemy that needs to be eliminated and I need your service" I replied.
"Understand. We follow your command." Soldier robot took out rocket and marched forwards.
Following him was a full set of TF2 mercenary robots.
There were 1,000 robots ready to attack. They just waited for my command.
"Director. I thought you were afraid that this matter would be known to outsiders."
"Nah. It's fine. I have police evacuated them before."
"How can you do that? Even the leader of Demon Slayer Corps can't achieve that." Tanjiro said full of admiration.
"Well. It's not difficult. I just tell them there will be a gas explosion then they will evacuate citizens for me."
"Wow. You are so smart."
"Okay. You don't have to worry that the innocent get involved in this matter anymore. Just focus on killing them." I shot at the demon waves which was like shooting at an army of ants.
The army of demons charged like a tsunami.
In response, the army of TF2 mercenary robots formed and shot at them.
"Director. Will he choose to run away?" Tanjiro asked.
"Yes. Probably."
"Then should we pursue him after that."
"No. Tanjiro. We don't."
"But his escape will bring more disaster."
"I understand that" I stopped him with my finger, "But look again"
Tanjiro looked at the battlefield and was shocked. Those robots were decimated easily under the demon's attack. He thought those robots could do something.
I looked at the bad performance of TF2 robots. There was no disappointment on my face. Instead, a smile formed slightly.
"We are losing, aren't we?" Tanjiro asked with a stiff voice.
"Your eyes don't look wrong. We are losing. But we lose on purpose," I replied.
"Why do you do that? How can we face them after that?"
"Sometimes, winning is not a good thing." I answered and explained, "We must take into account what we have."
I looked at the battle and then looked at Tanjiro.
"The demon we are hunting has a little problem with ego. This loss serves as a catalyst to boost his ego. Only then can he fall into my trap."
Tanjiro thought carefully about it and nodded. Most of the demons that he met had problems with ego.
But the only thing that worried him most was the trap.
"Which trap? Why I don't see it"
The army of demons advanced while the army of robots retreated slowly.
The Drum Demon who stood afar saw the embarrassing defeat of Demon Slayer Corps.
He couldn't vent his frustration back then. But now, the opportunity was right in front of him. As a prideful demon, he must take this moment to erase his embarrassing defeat.
So he approached.
Unknown to him, he stepped over a red line.
This moment was caught clearly by my eyes.
"Here comes my favorite part." I chanted the spell which made the red line illuminate in the dark of night.
Looking from the top, the red line drew into a circle surrounding the city.
The demon saw this but didn't do anything. They just stared at the red line which was shining like a deer standing in front of a running car.
"Reality Marble initiate"
Countless pillars of light soared to the sky forming into a dome. It covered the entire city. Then, groups of demons and robots disappeared from the street and the peace returned to the city.
The fight now continued in the minor space.
Groups of demons were confused. Some of them who stood at the edge hit the invisible wall when they unconsciously stepped backward.
A look of confusion appeared on the demons' faces.
They tried to push forward but to no avail.
"You see, Tanjiro. They all fall into the trap that I prepared before." I said while looking at Drum Demon's expression.
Kyogai wasn't happy about this developing situation.
"I have sealed their escape role. Now. The remaining job is to annihilate them." The interface manifested in front of me and I typed a new command.
"Nightmare Mode activate." All of the robots said and raised the muzzle.
Not like before when all their bullet hit the wall or ground, this time their bullet hit right into the head.
One by one fell to the ground with wide open mouths.
They thought they were the dominating side. And now, they were no different from a fish on the chopping board.
Even so, that couldn't stop their advancement.
"Wow. What kind of this technique?" Tanjiro said with a wide open mouth.
"Reality Marble. It's a technique to create a minor dimension." I answered.
"Can I learn it?"
"Ah, no. This is the technique that can only learn when you join the Wibu group. Even if I teach you, you can't use it."
Actually, Tanjiro can learn it but it will be a painful journey for both me and him. So it's best to say no to him.
"Ah. I see." Tanjiro replied weakly.
"We will discuss it at another time, they are coming to kill us." I pointed at the incoming wave of demons which had already breached the line of the TF2 robot.
"Raise your weapon and kill them all."
