Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Rising Tide?
Right across from Oscorp Tower, a van sat quietly on the roadside—standing out conspicuously among a crowd of luxury cars.
"How can Oscorp's firewall be this strong?"
Skye's hands flew across her keyboard in a blur.
"Phew…finally shook it off!"
"It's on par with Stark Industries' security systems. Wonder if Oscorp hired someone from Stark as their network security chief?"
Skye muttered to herself, letting out a long breath. She glanced at her phone, a bit conflicted, and cast a reluctant look at Oscorp Tower.
"There's definitely some hidden secret in there!
I've got to figure out what they're up to," she told herself. As someone who believed in justice, she felt compelled to uncover whatever shady deals politicians and megacorps had going on behind the scenes—and expose it all. Everyone had the right to know the truth, equally.
"Hey, miss, you can't park here!"
A sudden, forceful knock outside the van made Skye jump. She rolled the window down to see an Asian man, fairly handsome—and oddly familiar?
"Why can't I park here? Isn't this spot for parking?"
Aaron pointed at the other cars. "That's a Rolls-Royce, that's a Ferrari, there's a Pagani, and that one is a Porsche. Then look at yours…"
Skye scanned them all. Sure enough, her plain old van was definitely the odd one out.
"But there's no rule saying you can't park a van here!"
"Indeed, there's no official rule. Any guest can park here. But if you're not here on friendly terms…"
Skye's heart lurched guiltily. "I'm here for an interview!"
"Oh? Why don't I know about that?" Aaron said with a smile.
Skye stuck out her chest. "You're just a doorman! How would you know? I'm here to interview for the Network Security Department!"
Aaron gave an exaggerated nod and lifted an imaginary phone.
"Norman, is there a security department interview scheduled? What? None? You're sure? OK, got it."
He turned back to Skye. "So…should I call 911?"
Skye's face went pale. "Don't try to scare me! Just because I drive a van doesn't mean you can lie to me!"
She edged toward the driver's seat, but suddenly she heard the lock click—and Aaron yanked the door open.
Skye froze.
I locked it! How'd he open it?
"Hand over your phone. And your laptop."
"Stay out! Or I'll call the cops."
Skye tried to sound tough, clutching her phone and laptop in a final act of defense. Aaron didn't look angry; he just crooked a finger, and as if an invisible force had grabbed it, the laptop flew straight to him.
Skye barely had time to be shocked before she pounced, trying to grab it back—but her speed was painfully slow in Aaron's eyes. Without effort, he stepped aside, and she fell right into his arms as he secured the laptop.
"Miss, I know I'm handsome, but you didn't have to get this desperate. Maybe we can swap numbers, catch a movie, have dinner, then move on to—"
Skye ignored him and grabbed at the laptop. "That's mine! You're robbing me!"
"So… if you call out for it, will it answer?"
Skye glared and wheezed indignantly, "Then! If you call out for it, will it answer?"
"Hey, 'Mimi'?" Aaron addressed the laptop.
"I'm here!" replied the laptop.
Skye's jaw dropped.
What the heck? I never named my laptop!
"'Mimi'…?"
"…"
Aaron again: "Mimi?"
"I'm here!"
"What the f**k…"
Skye was glaring at the laptop like it had betrayed her. She'd scrimped and saved to buy it, cared for it diligently, always upgrading the hardware and software—yet the second it met this "man," it turned traitor?
"Wait—you're a hacker too?! Did you hack into my computer just now?" she demanded, bristling. But staring at Aaron, she realized— "You look kinda…like— The new CEO of Oscorp, Aaron!"
Indeed, the face in front of her overlapped with pictures she'd seen. Instead of excitement, she felt only fear. Caught red-handed hacking by the boss… now what?
"Congratulations, you guessed right! But—no prize." Aaron crooked a finger again, shooting a bit of webbing that latched onto the phone in Skye's pocket. With a light tug, he had it in his hand.
Skye gave up resisting. "Do whatever you want, fine…"
"Which group do you work for?"
She stayed silent.
"…Rising Tide?"
Skye flinched. "How do you know?"
Aaron ignored that, continuing, "Name?"
"Marilyn Monroe."
"Skye."
She scowled, "You already know—why ask?!"
He still paid no mind, taking her phone and dialing one of her recent contacts.
Skye panicked, trying to stop him.
Someone answered on the other end. "Skye, how's it—?"
"This is Aaron. Rising Tide, is it? Better watch out…"
Before he could finish, the line cut off. They must've realized the situation and abruptly hung up.
"You…"
"Calm down, Skye. I know you're worried, but don't be. Let's talk about our little matter. You hacked my company, broke through our firewall, damaged core files—cost us billions."
"Huh? Th-that's slander!"
She was close to shouting.
