Chapter 151: Favour

I leaned back, staring at the ceiling. My whole body ached, every muscle reminding me of the shit I had pulled tonight. I let out a slow breath, reaching into my pocket and pulling out my phone.

Tones of messages. Fuck. I had escaped U.A. in broad daylight. No plan, no warning. Just bolted.

How the fuck was I going to explain this?

Sorry, Aizawa, I ditched school to go save a wanted criminal. Also, my bad for not mentioning it sooner, but there is a civil war going on in Deika, and I decided to play firefighter. Don't expel me.

Yeah, no.

I scrolled through my phone. Group chat was a mess. Kaminari had dropped at least ten "bro wtf" texts, Mina had resorted to sending skull emojis, and Sero just left a single "bruh."

Toru: "WHERE DID YOU GO!?"

Bakugo: "FUCKING ANSWER."

Midnight: "Didn't expect you to be into ghosting, Ryuu~ I thought we had something special 😘"

Aizawa: "Come to my office when you return."

Fuck.

I locked my phone and rubbed my face.

Toga stirred. "You are frowning."

"Noticed, did you?"

She stretched lazily. "Regretting running off for me?"

"No, regretting that I have to explain it to my teachers."

She giggled, voice still scratchy from blood loss. "Tell them you were rescuing your beloved."

"Yeah, sure. Right after I tell them I fell down the stairs and broke the sound barrier."

She hummed, eyes half-lidded. "You should just join us. Then you wouldn't have to sneak around."

I slammed my hand onto the table between us. The wood cracked, then shattered outright under the force. Toga jumped, eyes widening before she caught herself. Her body flinched, but she didn't pull away completely.

"Look, Blood Bitch," I growled. "I came to save you because I am not sure what the fuck I think about you. But I am not a villain. I will never be a villain. If you do something drastic, if you cross me…" My fingers curled into the broken remnants of the table. "I will not pity you. This, I promise."

Toga blinked. Her lips parted slightly, like she was about to say something, but for once, she hesitated. That manic amusement, that teasing glint she always had, wasn't there. Instead, she just watched me, eyes sharp.

I exhaled hard through my nose, shoving away the heat burning through my chest. I hadn't even realized how fucking mad I was until now. Mad at her, mad at myself, mad at the entire goddamn situation. I shouldn't have had to come running. I shouldn't have had to carve my way through Deika just to drag her half-dead ass out of a war zone.

And yet, I did.

She finally tilted her head. "Ryuu, I-"

"Don't," I cut her off. "Don't fucking start with the 'but you came for me' bullshit." My hand twitched. "I came because I am stupid. I came because I have been playing this dumb game with you for too long, letting you get too fucking comfortable thinking this is more than what it is."

Her fingers curled slightly into the blanket covering her. "And what is it?"

"Something that should have ended the second I got what I needed from you."

Silence.

Toga didn't smile, didn't giggle, didn't throw another flirt my way. She just sat there, fingers still gripping the fabric, knuckles slightly tense.

I stood up, rolling my shoulders. My whole body still ached, but I ignored it. "Rest. You are alive because of me. Don't make me regret that shit." I turned, heading for the door.

"You don't regret it," she said.

I stopped.

Toga shifted, sitting up a little more. "If you regretted it, you wouldn't be here now."

I glanced back. "You think I like this? You think I like being the dumbass who has to clean up your mess?"

Her smile finally returned, but it was smaller, thinner. "You like me."

I clicked my tongue. "You are a fucking headache."

She hummed, resting her chin on her knee. "And you like me anyway."

I turned back to the door. "I am going out."

Toga watched me go, but she didn't try to stop me.

I sat on the broken bench in the overgrown garden, staring up at the sky through the gaps in the trees. The cold air bit at my skin, but I barely noticed. My muscles were still screaming from the night's bullshit, my knuckles stung from the fight, and my head was running in circles.

"Fuck me," I muttered.

This was a mess. I had run halfway across the country, beat the shit out of Meta Liberation Army henchwoman, nearly burned myself out stacking boosts like a psychopath, and for what?

For her.

I ran a hand down my face. I should have ignored that call. Should have let her handle her own shit. Should have told myself it wasn't my problem.

But I didn't.

Because I was an idiot…

I pulled out my phone.

Scrolled past the unread messages, ignored the ones I should probably answer, and tapped on a name.

The line rang once before she picked up.

"Ryuu," Mirko's voice came through, teasing as ever. "Shouldn't you be in school, or did you finally decide to drop out and go feral?"

I exhaled, leaning back against the wood. "Yeah, about that… I need a favor."

A pause. "Why do I feel like this is about to be some real dumb shit?"

"Because it is."

She clicked her tongue. "Where the hell are you?"

I glanced toward the old farmhouse. "Not Musutafu."

"Wow, great answer. Really narrows it down."

"A few prefectures out."

Silence. Then, a low chuckle. "The fuck you doing a few prefectures out, kid? You run away from home?"

"Something like that."

Another pause. Then, a sigh. "Go on. Dig yourself deeper."

"I ditched school. Left the city. Need an excuse before my teachers rip me a new one."

Mirko hummed, probably debating whether or not she should find me to beat or laugh. "What did you do?"

"Nothing… major. Just, it will do you good too." I rubbed my temple. "I will continue to be your problem for the foreseeable future if I don't get kicked out right?"

She snorted. "Oh, joy."

"Come on, Rumi."

"Don't butter me up, dumbass."

"Never."

Another pause. I could hear the faint sound of something breaking in the background. Probably a training dummy. "Alright, fine. What is the story?"

"Girl problems."

She barked out a laugh. "Damn, really? You, of all people, snuck off for some pussy?"

"I never said…"

"Don't even try to backpedal now. Shit is already hilarious."

I exhaled, pinching the bridge of my nose. "Are you gonna help or not?"

"Yeah, yeah. What, you want me to say you had some tragic love confession and needed to take a soul-searching road trip?"

"Sounds more believable than the truth."

She chuckled. "Yeah, cause you telling the school you knocked up a girl sounds right."

I kicked a rock off the path, watching it disappear into the weeds. "So, you will cover for me?"

"Sure. But only cause I wanna see how much fun I can have with this."

"Figured."

She was quiet for a beat. Then, "You good, Ryuu? If you ran off to play knight for some girl, I better at least get a sex tape out of it. You know, for blackmail."

I blinked. "I am good. Thanks."

"Mhm."

I could tell she wasn't buying it, but she wasn't pushing either.

"Alright, dumbass," she said, tone shifting back to her usual shit-eating amusement. "I will spin something good for you. You owe me, though."

"Yeah, yeah."

"And when you get back, you are sparring me."

"That is not a punishment."

"It will be."

I sighed. "Looking forward to it."

"Damn right you are. Now get your ass back to school before Aizawa tracks you down and drags you back by the scruff."

"Working on it."

"Good. Later."

The call ended.

I stared at my phone for a second, then tucked it away.

---

We reached Musutafu just as the morning light bled into the sky, the stolen car rolling to a stop outside the city limits. I killed the engine and sat there for a second, fingers drumming against the wheel. Then I got out. Left the keys in the ignition. Wasn't my problem anymore.

She tried to match my pace. "You are still mad at me."

No answer.

Toga let out a small hum, falling into step beside me. "I get it. You don't like when things get messy. You don't like feeling… things."

I kept walking.

"Ryuu." Her fingers brushed my sleeve, light but insistent. "Say something."

Still nothing.

She sighed, but I could hear the small smile behind it. "You are sulking. It is cute."

I stopped. Turned to face her. She bumped into me before stepping back, grinning like she hadn't just been a half-dead mess hours ago. Like she wasn't covered in barely-dried blood. Like she didn't make my life a constant fucking headache.

I exhaled through my nose. "Go home, Toga."

Her grin faltered. Just for a second. "That is what you are calling it? Home?"

I ignored her and kept moving. The city was waking up… early commuters, street vendors setting up, the usual morning rush creeping in. It felt like a completely different world from the one we had just left.

Toga wasn't done. "You didn't have to come for me, you know."

I shot her a look. "Yeah? Should've let you bleed out?"

She tilted her head, something unreadable in her gaze. "Would you have?"

I didn't answer.

She smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "You wouldn't."

I turned away, shaking my head. "Doesn't matter."

Toga stayed close. Not touching, not pushing… just there. Watching.

"You are fun when you are angry," she mused. "It makes me wonder if you would ever really hurt me."

I stopped again, looking at her. "Keep pushing."

She grinned. "You say that like you don't want me to."

I clenched my jaw and started walking again. My phone buzzed. Probably another message from Aizawa, or Kaminari, or someone else demanding to know where the fuck I had been. Didn't check. Didn't care.

Toga stretched her arms above her head, walking backward in front of me now. "So, what now? We part ways and pretend this never happened? You go back to playing hero, and I go back to being a villain?"

I pushed past her. "Sounds about right."

She grabbed my wrist. Not tight, not desperate… just to make me stop.

I looked down at her.

Toga stared up at me, something different in her eyes now. Not teasing. Not playful. Just… something.

"Ryuu."

I didn't move.

She leaned in slightly, searching my face. "You don't regret it."

I yanked my wrist free and kept walking.

She didn't follow this time.

I made it a few steps before she called out. "I will see you again, you know."

I didn't turn around.

Her voice was quieter now, but still carrying that damn certainty. "You always find me."

I kept moving.
