Chapter 44: Chapter 44 A fight toe to toe, or is it?

On the other side of the portal sat an all too familiar mouse bear with a scar across one of his eyes, drinking coffee in peace, until a random arm appeared directly through a black mist portal.

Nezu, the principal of U.A., and one of, if not the most intelligent being on the planet, was instantly alarmed. The security system he had put in place flared up immediately.

In the next moment, as the portal began widening in size, Nezu was finally able to see what was on the other side, and his rapidly beating heart calmed down significantly.

"Souta-kun, you better have a really good explanation for this," Nezu demanded, his voice less playful than Souta had ever heard of him before.

"I'm sorry, principal, but right now there is an emergency on my end. For this, I had hoped to either find Aizawa-sensei, or All Might here with you," Souta quickly explained his actions quickly, in a rushed tone. "I know that my actions today have already broken quite a few laws, but right now, that isn't important."

Nezu caught up on the desperation in his students voice directly, and chose to let the incident go, for now, "Both of them are not on School grounds right now, why do you ask for them?"

"Damn," Souta cursed. "I'm in Hosu city right now, and an attack from the same people that came for us at the USJ is currently happening, there is one of these things that was also there back then, though, this time I can't really do anything against it. So, I hoped to find one of those two."

Both of them went silent again, the two were busy trying to think of ways to solve Souta's current predicament. In the end, Nezu managed to calculate at least a dozen different ways in merely a few seconds, most of them didn't appear entirely feasible though, with what little information he actually had at hand.

But, there was one method that could work, and it was the one Nezu was willing to bet on today. "Souta-kun, you can still copy quirks, right? If so, copy my quirk, it should allow you to come up with strategies as the situation calls for them. I'm sorry, this is the only thing I can do for you currently."

Souta was shocked by this response. It wasn't something he expected in the slightest, but at the same time, it was appearing obvious. The principal didn't have that many information at hand, and with All Might and Aizawa-sensei not available, this appeared as the most viable choice.

This was at least Souta's best explanation. Nevertheless, he didn't have the time to further overthink it, the time he had asked Mirko for, has already long expired. Since then, it had most likely been close to 15-20 seconds right now, already.

"Okay, thank you for your trust, Principal." Souta spoke, while once again directing his hand towards the mouse-bear.

[Quirk 'High Specs' detected. Copy?]

'Yes.'

[Copying intimidated…]

'Come on!' Souta could barely hold back anymore. He needed to help Mirko, he knew she merely put on a brave front there, if her prior injuries were anything to speak off.

[...Copying completed]

As soon as this notification echoed in his head, Souta pulled back his hand and excused himself in haste, before closing the portal afterwards.

Before it completely closed, he was barely able to hear a last sentence, "I'm sorry, and... be careful."

It sounded reallydowncast, but Souta didn't have the time to dwell on it, right now.

He ran over to the side of the rooftop where Mirko had previously jumped down, and followed her example immediately. In the moment of his free fall, he also began understanding the nature of his newest quirk addition.

High Spec didn't instantly give him intelligence on the same level as the principal. No. It greatly increased his thinking speed, and allowed him to understand nearly everything that was happening around him.

Souta felt as if… as if his mind was freed from some kind of fog, clearing his thoughts. This rush held on until Souta reached the ground, and directed his concentration back to the current situation.

In front of him, he saw a dangerous game of cat and mouse, similar to what he had been in, just minutes ago, this time though, it was a bunny that was running from the way more scary 'cat', the Nomu.

His now improved mind began running faster than ever before, faster than he ever imagined possible.

The next moment, Souta made his turn. The familiar orange sparks appeared all over his body, as he jumped straight into Full Cowling: 30%.

He shot over the whole square, his body was hurting, but the regeneration held on. His improved recognition helped him improve his position mid-air, enabling him to direct his fist exactly where it was supposed to go.

Souta's fist hit the throat of the Nomu with enough power, that a small shock wave was created after it had landed.

The Nomu was instantly send flying backwards. Even this damn monster appeared paralyzed for the moment.

Next to Souta, who had been able to use the force of the impact to drastically slowdown his own speed, Mirko slumped to the ground, visibly exhausted, "Didn't you say it would only be five seconds?"

Souta couldn't help but smirk, and replied teasingly, "Didn't you say that you could hold it back, until I was ready, Miss Pro Hero?"

"Heh, I did, didn't I? Though, what is with your plan, now?"

Souta looked away in embarrassment, "Well, the original plan… has failed. But… I now have something else that can help us."

Mirko simply looked at him weirdly, before slumping down on the ground even more, releasing a long sigh, and just saying, "Alright, whatever, guess we're finished then."

Souta, honestly was a bit hurt by these words, but didn't have the time to dwell on them. From the corner of his eye, he noticed a sudden movement, his brain now fast enough to actually make use of such information, instead of relying on just his instincts.

Before the fist of the now recovered Nomu even reached him, Souta managed to open another warp gate, exactly where the fist was going to strike him, and through the exit redirecting it back to it, completely neutralizing the threat for a moment, while also having found a different approach for this fight.

'Guess this could work, but is it enough to finish this? Ah damn, just have to give it my all!'

"Hey! I'll take over here, but you can't rest just now, Miss Pro. I have no clue if what I have is enough to completely beat this thing, so, if possible, bring some reinforcements."

Mirko looked conflicted for a second, but let it go. She had to accept that there was little she could do here right now anyway. Therefore, without looking back again, she got off the ground and rushed in the direction in which the other heroes had led the Nomus.

Souta, meanwhile, had his eyes closed right now. Even with his new quirk, for what he had in mind, he needed every bit of concentration he could get.

It was only when he heard a quiet crackling, indicating another move by the Nomu, but now, Souta was completely ready.

The orange sparks of Full Cowling flared across Souta's entire body, resonating completely with his hero suit.

In the air before him, multiple clouds of black and purple mist began to open, the portals that would hopefully give him the edge in the confrontation.

And then, the assault began.

A powerful punch from the Nomu, which had been redirected through one gate, was instantly met with the backside of the Nomu's head, before another fist emerged from a different portal and stroke it.

Then came his second fist from a new angle. A third from above. A fourth from the side. A fifth aimed at its knee.

Souta's arms turned into a complete blur of simple and controlled violence.

To an outside observer, it would appear as if he had momentarily sprouted an extra pair of arms, each completely engulfed by the crackling orange energy of One For All.

The cluster of warp gates in front of him flickered and shifted with every microsecond, the highest mastery he had ever reached, all conducted by his now High Spec-enhanced mind.

Each gate resembled a muzzle, directing his relentless punches to strike the Nomu from unpredictable directions without Souta ever needing to move from his spot.

The Nomu, the brain dead abomination of raw power and instinct, was initially overwhelmed. It staggered, its absorbent body thudded with impacts that came from everywhere at once.

But somehow it began to adapt, to learn. Its brainless eyes stopped trying to track the fists, and instead focused on the formation of the portals themselves. It appeared to anticipate the rhythm of the assault, its massive arms lashing out to swat at the portals or blindly counter-attack.

The fight had devolved into a pure, chaotic brawl of melee power. Souta, a blur of calculation, continued his barrage, now more and more needing to use his warp gates defensively.

A brutal punch from the Nomu would disappear into a portal before him, only to re-emerge from another gate right beside the Nomu's own head, forcing the monster to punch itself. The sickening crunch of bone and flesh was constant, but the Nomu's high-speed regeneration continued working miracles, sealing the wounds almost as fast as they were made.

The fight continued like this, a maelstrom of redirected violence and rapid-fire strikes.

But soon a new, dangerous variable entered the equation. The sheer friction and speed of Souta's punches began to heat up his fists, more and more, causing them to now also enhance the Nomu.

Souta felt this change instantly.

The Nomu's movements became a fraction faster. Its regeneration ticked up a notch. 'Its absorbing the heat from my fist?' he realized with a surge of cold dread, 'fucking hell!' The temperature absorption Quirk was turning his own kinetic energy, his own frantic pace, into fuel for his enemy.

He couldn't stop. Not right now.

But something needed to happen, and his mind worked on a solution, as soon as the problem arose, eventually reaching one. 'My ice touch!'

'If I put too much strength into it, it will give it just even more power, should I actually risk it…?' Souta wasn't sure, but needed to take that risk.

To hesitate now would be to give the creature the opening it needed. He had to bet on his brain to fine tune his ice, to balance out the created heat perfectly.

It took Souta exactly three punches to create the necessary balance.

Sadly, those three miscalculated punches were enough.

The Nomu roared, now visibly stronger, its body steaming with absorbed energy. It ignored a punch to its ribs, disregarded another to its shoulder, and with a burst of his terrifying, newly acquired speed, it finally managed to catch and clamp down on Souta's fist in the moment it left its portal.

CLANG!

The sound seemed absolute to him.

With it, Souta's entire barrage, his whole body's momentum, came to a dead, jarring halt. He was utterly stopped.

For a single, frozen moment, Souta's eyes widened as wide as saucers, the shock of capture overriding everything.

But then, his High Spec-enhanced mind kicked into overdrive. Time seemed to slow to a crawl as he processed the new reality.

With his momentum lost, he knew the brute force contest had been lost. 'I need something else!My movement is limited... no, it gives me an opportunity.' A new plan had been formed in a fraction of a second.

The rest of the other warp gates flickering around the Nomu snapped shut in an instant, revealing the surrounding area in an even more destroyed form, than it had been before.

With his right arm still trapped in the single remaining portal and held fast in the Nomu's grip, Souta decided to use it as an anchor instead.

He surged forward, diving headfirst into the very warp gate that held him captive. The only gate still active.

Souta emerged on the other side, directly in front of the Nomu, both of them still connected by their locked arms.

'I need its arm in an unfavorable position, and then get behind it, then I should be able to get back into the fight! Maybe even have the moment to copy the temperature quirk. Otherwise…'

It was the split-second, in which Souta began to hesitate, that the Nomu lunged out with its other, still free arm. The moment where the massive arm went directly towards his throat, Souta was thrown off-guard, and off-balance.

'Shit.' This was the only thing that his mind was able to produce, before his throat and head were completely in the palm of the Nomu's clenched fist. He felt the extreme pressure from all sides pressing down on his head and throat.

""SOUTA!""

Multiple voices shouted out to him at the same time, containing all the emotions they currently felt, but the recipient of these screams was already unable to hear them.

Barely a fraction of a second, before his whole head could've been crushed to bits, something that Souta was positive about would actually kill him, his system rang out.
