Chapter 14: Chapter 14: A Date? Here?
Anim moved through the ruined landscape of the landslide zone like a man possessed, his stretched legs carrying him from building to building in long, powerful bounds. The communication device had gone silent, but Shigaraki's childish excitement about treating his classmates like video game characters still echoed in his mind.
"Tutorial monsters," he muttered, landing on a partially collapsed overpass. "We'll see who's the real monster here."
From his elevated position, he could see the other training zones spread out across the USJ facility. Smoke was rising from the conflagration area, ice crystals glittered in the distance from what had to be Todoroki's handiwork, and he could hear the distinctive crackle of electrical discharge from somewhere near the flood zone.
His classmates were fighting. The question was whether they were winning.
A flash of orange and black caught his eye in the mountainous zone adjacent to his position. Two figures were moving through the rocky terrain—one of them had the distinctive silhouette of Jiro's costume.
"There," he breathed, relief flooding through him.
Anim launched himself toward the mountain zone, his body stretching to cover the distance in a single leap. As he got closer, he could make out more details—Jiro was paired with Kaminari, and they were being pursued by at least four villains through the rocky maze.
He landed on a boulder above them just as the villains closed in.
"Well, well," one of the villains called out, a woman with what looked like razor-sharp hair. "Nowhere left to run, little heroes."
"I can take them!" Kaminari said, electricity crackling around his hands. "Just get back!"
"Denki, wait—" Jiro started, but it was too late.
Kaminari discharged everything he had in a massive electrical burst that lit up the entire zone. The attack was powerful enough to drop two of the villains instantly, but as always happened when he went full power, Kaminari immediately went brain-dead.
"Wheyyy," he said with a dopey grin, giving a thumbs up as electricity still sparked weakly around him.
"Idiot," Jiro muttered, but her tone was fond. She turned to face the two remaining villains—the razor-haired woman and a massive man whose arms were covered in what looked like metallic scales.
"Two down," the scaled villain rumbled. "Two to go. This is almost too easy."
"You sure about that?" Anim called out from above.
All heads turned upward as he dropped down between Jiro and the villains, his protective energy already flaring to life around his body.
"Anim!" Jiro's relief was obvious. "Where did you come from?"
"Landslide zone. Had to deal with some tutorial monsters." He cracked his knuckles, the sound echoing off the rocky walls. "You two okay?"
"We're fine," Jiro said, though he could see small cuts on her arms and legs from navigating the rough terrain. "Kaminari's just... temporarily out of commission."
"Wheyyy," Kaminari agreed helpfully from where he was sitting on a rock.
"How touching," the razor-haired woman said, her hair beginning to extend into sharp, whip-like tendrils. "A rescue attempt. This'll make the game more interesting."
"Lady, you have no idea what you're dealing with," Anim said, his energy pulsing brighter. "And this isn't a game."
The scaled villain attacked first, his metallic arms swinging with enough force to shatter stone. But Anim's body flowed around the attacks like water, bending and stretching to avoid the powerful blows.
"What the hell kind of Quirk is that?" the villain snarled, overextending on a particularly brutal swing.
"The kind that's about to ruin your day," Anim replied, his stretched arm wrapping around the villain's wrist and yanking him off balance.
The man stumbled, and Anim was there with an uppercut that sent him flying into the mountainside. The impact left a crater in the rock face.
"Impossible," the razor-haired woman breathed, but she was already moving, her hair lashing out in a complex pattern designed to overwhelm his defenses.
Anim twisted and flowed through the attacks, but some of the razor-sharp strands managed to find their mark. Small cuts appeared on his arms and chest, though his protective energy prevented any serious damage.
"Jiro!" he called out, ducking under a particularly vicious swipe. "Can you disorient her?"
"On it!" Jiro plugged her earphone jacks into the amplifiers on her gloves, then sent a focused sound wave directly at the villain.
The woman screamed as the sonic attack hit her, her hands flying to her ears as blood began to trickle from her eardrums. Her hair went wild, lashing randomly as she lost control.
Anim didn't waste the opportunity. His body stretched as he closed the distance, and his fist connected with the villain's solar plexus. She dropped like a stone.
"Nice teamwork," he said, helping Jiro to her feet.
"Thanks. Though I could have handled it," she replied, but her small smile took the sting out of the words.
"I know you could have. Doesn't mean you should have to."
Something in his tone made her look at him more carefully. "You're different. Since the scattering, I mean. Your energy feels... stronger."
She wasn't wrong. The protective aura around him was more stable now, more responsive to his will. Each fight seemed to push it further, like his body was remembering something it had forgotten.
"Yeah, well, turns out I don't like it when people threaten my friends," he said, surprised by how easily the word 'friends' came out.
Jiro's cheeks went slightly pink. "Friends, huh?"
"Wheyyy," Kaminari added from his rock, still grinning dopily.
"We should get moving," Anim said, though he was reluctant to break the moment. "The others are still out there."
"Right." Jiro looked around the mountain zone, her expression becoming focused. "I can hear fighting from the central plaza. Sounds like... Aizawa's in trouble."
Anim felt his protective energy flare at the thought of their teacher facing Shigaraki and that massive creature alone. "Then we better get there fast."
"What about Kaminari?" Jiro asked, glancing at their brain-fried classmate.
"I'll carry him," Anim said, easily hoisting the electric boy onto his back. "My body can handle the extra weight."
As they made their way toward the central plaza, Anim found himself hyperaware of Jiro moving beside him. The way she used her Quirk to scout ahead, the determined set of her shoulders, the small cuts on her arms that proved she'd been fighting hard before he arrived.
"Jiro," he said quietly as they approached the edge of the mountain zone.
"Yeah?"
"When this is over... want to grab some food? Just the two of us?"
She stumbled slightly, her cheeks going red. "Like... like a date?"
"Yeah. Like a date."
"Wheyyy," Kaminari said approvingly from his back.
"I... yeah. I'd like that," Jiro said, her voice soft.
"Good," Anim said, his protective energy pulsing warmly around them. "Something to look forward to."
But first, they had a psychotic man-child and his pet monster to deal with.
As they reached the edge of the plaza, the sight that greeted them made Anim's blood run cold. Aizawa was down, his face covered in blood, while Shigaraki stood over him with that same twisted grin. The massive bird-like creature—the Nomu—loomed nearby, its exposed brain gleaming wetly in the artificial light.
"Looks like more players joined the game!" Shigaraki called out, his voice carrying that same childish excitement from the communication device. "Perfect timing for the final boss battle!"
Anim set Kaminari down gently behind a piece of cover, his protective energy beginning to pulse with something that felt dangerously close to rage.
"Stay here," he told Jiro. "This is about to get ugly."
"Anim, wait—"
But he was already moving, his body stretching as he launched himself toward the plaza. Shigaraki wanted to play games?
Fine. Anim would show him what happened when the game got real.
