Chapter 11: Betrayal in the Dark Night (Part 4)
Slowly, the entire process surfaced.
The words spoken by the five wandering Blue Skin Species before were mostly true, but they concealed a crucial part. He didn't directly escape; instead, after being captured, because he was considered smart and articulate, he was found useful and released.
"Why did he so loyally work for the enemy tribe?" Sura still couldn't understand.
"You don't understand their habits." Flan shook his head.
"For these species born of the tribes, although he was captured, was abandoned, and is the lowest in status, as long as he brings back the intelligence of your settlement, he will be rewarded and become a person of high status in the tribe."
"And the relatives killed in his original tribe?" Sura still didn't understand.
"Relatives? To them, deceased relatives are not as important as their well-being. As long as you defeat their tribe, you can assimilate them. Of course, their loyalty is maintained as long as you are the strongest in this area. If not, they will betray you at any moment."
"Lack of culture is like this, very foolish and short-sighted. I had only read such descriptions in books before, but I didn't expect it to be like this in reality." Flan sighed.
"No wonder this group of guys can only muddle in remote areas, never truly becoming civilized." Saying this, he glanced disdainfully at the tall and sturdy Blue Skin Species in front of him.
"Where are those guys now?" Sura was eager to know where the family of five had escaped.
"East, north, big tree, camp..." Hearing the leader's description, it seems there was a small camp, with a few people left to guard the luggage and packages, after all, they came from dozens of miles away and needed a break in the middle.
"Let Guy and me go this time, Hexia and Flan can stay here." Sura stood up and gripped the gun at her side tightly.
"Aren't you afraid there are many ambushes over there?" Tilan was still a bit worried.
"No need, they can't bring that many people." Sura and Guy were familiar with this barren land, and the number of enemies appearing in the settlement tonight was the limit. The largest settlement nearby had barely over a hundred people and it wasn't possible for all of them to mobilize.
"Alright, you two be careful on the way." Hexia watched them walk into the pitch-black night.
In the early morning, Sura and Guy returned with blood stains and injuries. Sura was also leading a tall Blue Skin Species man with his wrists bound by iron chains, who was also injured.
Back at the settlement, looking at the ground littered with bodies, he felt some fear and panic. The fleeting hope he had dissipated instantly.
"You, go over there." Pointing with the gun, he led the man to Marula's corpse.
"Do you remember how many meals you ate that he made?" Sura drew the rifle's bolt and pressed a bullet in.
"I don't remember." He genuinely didn't remember, given the Blue Skin Species' low level of culture and basic inability to do arithmetic.
"That's really a pity then." Sura pressed the muzzle against his back.
"Perhaps your Sun has long since extinguished, but pray anyway, hope that in the future you're created smarter and more rational."
"Bang——"
The crisp gunshot pierced into the dull flesh, with a pained expression, the Blue Skin Species man fell to the ground and slowly died.
Having done all this, Sura couldn't find much joy, just holding the gun, staring blankly at the grayish sky overhead.
She once thought that in this barren land far from conflict, she would have a quiet and leisurely life, watching sunsets with her companions, occasionally dabbling in her inventions, bringing laughter to everyone, and gaining achievement and satisfaction.
But now it seems, she was ultimately disappointed, this is a world abandoned by the Divine.
Without those blazing great Suns, these Newborn Races were like children who had lost their parents, only aimlessly wandering the earth, following their instincts to survive.
No goals, no meaning, the vacant feeling of that Connection in their consciousness tortured them, born to serve the great God, but now that god has long perished, the void in the heart can never be filled.
Perhaps they belong to something, but certainly not to those barbaric primitive tribes, but to a place with family and a warm collective.
It was from this that settlements and outposts of varying sizes were born in this land.
