Chapter 180: Aunt Elena and the Dawn Cloth
High atop the Purple Giant Tree, the houses carved within the trunk carry an original and cozy texture. It may not be luxurious here, but it is definitely comfortable.
Inor was lying on the wooden bed by the window, reading a novel. On the small table beside her sat her beloved brass kettle player, gently playing a soothing tune. Occasionally, a few birds flitted through the leaves of the treetop, landing on the windowsill before hopping off and flying away.
The time passed leisurely, and the Elf Songstress occasionally flipped through the wooden recording board in front of her, the text projected on it seemed to be engraved, constantly changing.
"Knock knock——" A light footfall came from downstairs. Although it was still far away, because the entire house was within the tree, the sound transmitted quickly and was easily heard.
Originally reading, Inor lifted her head, thought for a moment, then hid the recording board under the pillow. After that, she picked up the seven-stringed zither in the room and lightly plucked it in her hand, gradually synchronizing its tune with the song playing on the player.
Soon, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in." She set the zither down, then looked up to see a handsome elf with silver-grey hair walk in.
"Phyllis, what brings you here now?" Inor said, mentioning the name of the handsome elf.
"Lady Inor, the celebration is about to begin. As per usual, you, as the Songstress, are required to attend the events. Here is the schedule sent by the organizers." Phyllis then handed over the recording board in his hand.
"Oh right, I remember now." Inor recalled that it seemed to be the same three years ago, though she hadn't paid much attention back then, just went through the routine.
"Let me see."
"Are these the events for this year?"
____
First event: The Feather Garment of the Fire-colored Cloud
Second event: Shaping with the Water of No Harm
Third event: Gazing at the Heavenly Star
Fourth event: Branch Bending of Lake Wood
Fifth event: The Roar of the Song of Shuo Guang
____
"Yes." Phyllis explained these five competition events to Inor in detail.
"The first event, the Feather Garment of the Fire-colored Cloud, refers to the 'Fire-colored' spectacle that occurs once every decade on this planet, possibly due to a coincidence between planetary orbit and geomagnetism. During these two months, you can see gorgeous colored flowing summer every dusk, and according to some technique secretly passed down among our elves, it can be integrated into weaving from the special rhythms in the rays, to create a special 'Dawn Cloth'. This is quite an advanced technique that only a few skilled and talented individuals have been able to learn.
So, the first challenge is whether one can weave the Dawn Cloth in a single attempt and tailor a Feather Garment of Colored Rays according to the special secret technique issued, which comes from an ancient Upper Gate school of the Eastern Continent and is now semi-public.
Sounds difficult, wouldn't that mean only masters of fabric art or tailors participate in the first event?"
"Indeed, other Transcendents can also learn the relevant secret techniques to participate, but the final quality of the clothing is hard to surpass those skilled masters."
"Tell me about the second event." Inor became curious.
"The second event involves using the Invisible Water to shape and complete some sculpture. Unlike previous stone carvings, the challenge lies in solidifying the water of no harm into a finished piece in one go, not a drop more or less, nor can excess parts be carved away or missing parts be supplemented afterward, which greatly tests the ability of pre-calculated design," Phyllis answered.
"Seems rather simple to me." Inor thought for a moment.
"It's not that easy. The reason it's called the Water of No Harm is that this water is particularly light and can even float in the air, so once the bottle is opened, if not well controlled, it will disperse into the air immediately. Therefore, special ability is required to confine it.
"I see, what about the third event then?"
"The third event, Gazing at the Heavenly Star, aims to promote the long-lost Star Magic. Such magic flourished during the Third Era in the Oz Country, but much of it was lost with the fall of Oz. Today, although this magic isn't needed for combat, there's much to learn and borrow from it, especially the 'Star Formation'."
"I'm not very interested in magic." Inor shook her head.
"The fourth event involves a dueling competition on the lake and is considered the most common and popular event. However, to avoid excessive bloodshed, the match only allows wooden weapons, and they must be plucked from the tree over the lake.
"The final event is a singing contest, using the now popular Shining Crystals. When subjected to different frequencies of Magic Power, they react differently and are thus often used in various performances. This last event also aims to achieve better artistic performance to satisfy the audience." Phyllis completed the explanation.
"To satisfy the audience, of course, knowing that the first two events are generally less visually appealing, the third has a bit of confrontation but likely becomes tediously academic. If the last two are still that dull, then future celebrations will see no tourists come to watch." Inor understood something and teased.
"Yes, Lady Inor, many in the Star Domain have prepared for a long time for this celebration, and the whole Star Domain's media will broadcast it to increase the celebration's impact."
"It's not necessary to be so serious." Inor waved her hand.
"How can that be, a rare celebration with Lady Inor attending must achieve the best effect." The other's voice became enthusiastic.
