The Batiers Flower is a common cash crop in the Asura Kingdom. Its shape resembles lavender, with pale purple flowers that can be eaten directly. It requires minimal care during its growth, needing little attention. Thanks to its fragrance, it is often processed into spices and sent to the capital, where it is turned into various perfumes and distributed across the country.
The village of Buena primarily relies on wheat and Batiers Flowers for its livelihood.
At the edge of the forest, three figures—one large and two small—were making their way through the dense Batiers Flower fields.
"How much longer, Sylphie?" Rudeus asked, pushing aside the purple flowers as he glanced at Sylphiette.
"The tower is quite far from the village... It'll take about another hour," Sylphiette replied softly.
Rudeus looked at her in surprise. "Why does your father make you deliver food all the way out here? Couldn't he just prepare something in the morning and bring it with him?"
Sylphiette lowered her voice. "The shifts at the tower... There aren't enough people, so Father usually stays there for five days at a time. He can't prepare that much food in advance..."
"Ah... I see. That's why you brought a whole basket of bread. Is that enough for the whole day?"
Sylphiette nodded.
Behind them, Allen was plucking strands of flowers from the swaying purple fields, crushing them in his palm and keeping only the seeds. Without looking up, he asked, "But the bread in the basket is inedible now, right? Are we really going empty-handed?"
Rudeus froze, turning to look at Sylphiette with a panicked expression. She tilted her head back, her eyelashes fluttering in the wind as she glanced at Allen. "Father can hunt if needed. When the food gets ruined and there's no time to make more, he does that... But if there aren't any rabbits or other animals nearby... he might go hungry..."
"I see..." Allen murmured, rolling the seeds between his fingers as he glanced toward the nearby forest. "An hour's walk... That should be enough. By the way, is the tower tall? Is it easy to spot?"
Rudeus blinked, unsure why Allen was asking, but he answered honestly. "I heard from Father that it's about three meters high, with nets around it to protect against monsters. It should be pretty noticeable..."
Allen smiled and stopped walking, looking at the two confused children in front of him. "You two go ahead. I'll catch up. There's still time, so I'll go get some food."
An hour later, at the edge of the forest.
"Who are you, handsome?" Rudeus stared at the strikingly handsome, golden-haired elf with pointed ears on the tower, his eyes wide in surprise. After a moment, he remembered his prepared apology and spoke up. "Hello, I came to apologize. We accidentally ruined your lunch. Please don't blame Sylphie."
On the tower, Sylphiette's father, Roa, glanced at Rudeus and then at Sylphiette, who was looking down in silence. He didn't seem to mind Rudeus mispronouncing her name. "Sylphie, were you bullied again today?"
Sylphiette stiffened, murmuring, "No... Father, someone helped me today. It's just that... I accidentally ruined the lunch again... I'm sorry, Father."
Roa sighed, his stern expression softening with a hint of helplessness. "Again? You poor thing... Maybe it's better if your mother delivers the food from now on."
"No, I can do it..."
"Next time, if you're bullied, tell me, okay? I'll make sure they pay for it. Don't make up stories about ruining the food yourself, alright?"
"Okay."
Rudeus watched their interaction, blinking. Luffy... I wonder if Sylphie can stretch her limbs like him? Wait, that's off-topic. Sylphie is her nickname, huh? It sounds affectionate.
Roa turned to Rudeus, who immediately bowed at a perfect 90-degree angle. "Actually, it wasn't Sylphie who ruined the food. It was me... I mean, I was helping her and accidentally ruined it. I'm sorry."
Allen still isn't back... Damn it, that guy must have anticipated this. He said he was going to get food, but he's probably just avoiding this mess. What a sly fox... Well, since I'm his friend, I'll take the blame for him! Huh... Now this family has another kid besides Paul...
"You kids are all so responsible... You don't have to take the blame. I know it was the village kids who threw the mud. You helping her is already kind enough. The food doesn't matter. What's your name?"
"Nice to meet you, I'm Ru—"
Just as Rudeus was about to introduce himself, Roa's expression suddenly darkened. He straightened up, drew his bow, and fired an arrow into the forest.
The arrow shot like a meteor, cutting through the air with a sharp whistle—only for the sound to abruptly stop.
The shadowy forest seemed to swallow the arrow whole, as if it had been devoured by a lurking beast.
Roa's face turned grim as he urgently spoke. "You two, go back to the village and notify the knights—"
But before he could finish, his eyes widened in shock as he stared at where the arrow had disappeared.
Rudeus and Sylphiette followed his gaze.
A massive, shadowy boar-like figure was slowly approaching the tower.
Sylphiette instinctively covered her mouth, about to run back to the village as her father had instructed, but Rudeus grabbed her arm. She turned in panic, only to see Rudeus looking impressed, nodding toward the approaching figure.
Sylphiette blinked and looked again.
It wasn't a monster—or rather, it was a monster.
But not a living one.
A figure emerged from the shadows of the forest, dragging the massive tusks of the boar behind him. In his other hand, he held the arrow Roa had fired. As Sylphiette watched with wide eyes, the figure stepped into the light.
"If there's no bread, we'll have pork for lunch," Allen said casually, tossing the boar's carcass at their feet. He handed the arrow back to Roa, who had jumped down from the tower, looking stunned.
Allen clapped his hands. "Come on, let's see how I cook."
Of course, Allen had to sincerely ask Rudeus to use his magic to start a fire and boil water.
An hour later, the aroma of roasted meat filled the air.
Rudeus used his Water Cannon spell to clean the blood from the monster's carcass, leaving the ground damp but clear.
The four of them gathered around a makeshift table and chairs created with Earth Magic, along with a simple grill.
Though, to be honest, it seemed like Rudeus was doing most of the cooking.
Allen only handled the cutting, skewering, and flipping of the meat.
But Rudeus didn't mind.
This whole setup felt like a riverside BBQ, reminding him of his past life. Back then, he hadn't had any friends to go out with for picnics or barbecues. Now, in this world, he was experiencing it in a slightly odd way.
Even if his current friends were just kids, it still felt nice.
"I didn't know Batiers Flower seeds could be used as seasoning. This is delicious!" Rudeus let out a satisfied groan, while Roa seemed less interested in the food. Instead, he kept glancing at Allen with an appreciative look.
"I didn't expect you to be the swordsmanship teacher Paul mentioned. You're so young... It's great that you and Rudeus have become friends with Sylphie. Please take care of her in the future... Also, her hair color is just a genetic trait. Please don't treat her differently because of it."
"Don't worry, Uncle. Sylphie is our friend. Of course, we'll look out for her."
As he spoke, Sylphiette's pointed ears twitched, and she looked up at Allen silently. In front of her, a pile of perfectly grilled meat slices sat on a leaf, stacked like a small mountain.
Allen turned to Rudeus, who was too busy stuffing his face with grilled meat to pay attention to his future first wife.
Allen sighed inwardly and added another slice of meat to Sylphiette's pile, causing her to blush in panic.
Given how Rudeus is acting, even though Sylphie hasn't cut her hair short yet, he still doesn't realize she's a girl. Otherwise, he wouldn't be acting like this... Honestly, there's no need to push them together. Let things develop naturally. Childhood friendships are fine as they are.
Sylphie's main role in the story is to introduce new characters—like Ariel—and set up the Asura Kingdom's throne succession arc. While she's cute and likable, she's mostly a plot device. Her other role seems to be... curing Rudeus's impotence and ensuring his harem's functionality? And maintaining harmony within the harem? Her children don't even play a role in saving the world... What a tragic world where the childhood friend loses...
At this thought, Allen gave Sylphiette a sympathetic look and added another slice of meat to her pile.
Her eyes widened. "Al... Allen... I... I really can't eat anymore..."
"Yes, you can," Allen said, raising an eyebrow.
Sylphiette shivered and stuffed the meat into her mouth, her cheeks bulging like a small animal's as she blinked at him.
"I... ate it..."
"Good job~"
Roa watched the children's interactions with a smile.
Though, strictly speaking, only one of the four was actually a child...
After the meal, Allen took a piece of the boar's hide for himself and gave the rest to Roa.
The three of them returned to the hillside where they had been earlier. By now, several children were playing there, but as soon as they saw Allen, one boy let out a terrified scream, and the group scattered like rats.
Allen walked up to a tree and casually carved a few words into the bark with his sword.
