Chapter 1094
Sebastian barged in
"I would never…! Even if I wanted to, it would be impossible with Leo and the fenrirs around. Besides, you are not at fault. And so I would never do you any harm!"
"Then what's the problem?"
"However…that desire in me can be considered a flaw. To work close to you and Lady Claire would be…"
So that's what was troubling him.
He did not know how to erase the desire. And now he was starting to think it made him unfit to work for me or the duke.
"But what's wrong with wanting to be a noble? I am just guessing here…but I would not be surprised if many people in towns and villages want to be one as well."
"Tha may be, but…"
"As long as you want to become one through honest means, then it is not a bad thing."
Of course, there was also a lot of responsibility that came with it. And the food wasn't that special.
The duke kept the taxes low, and made most of his income through successful businesses. And on top of that, he donated extra to the orphanage.
There was a lot to do and think about… As someone who saw it up close, I did not want to become one.
"I do not know what will happen in the future. But I think that working honestly as a servant and gaining knowledge would help raise the chances of being recommended. Everyone wants a promotion, after all."
Though, I was not very ambitious myself.
Perhaps all of that had been crushed during my time working in a Japanese company… Had I stayed there, even a promotion would not have been a good thing.
"You say that, but… Servants must swear absolute loyalty and…"
"That way of thinking is wrong…"
"Sebastian… Since when were you here!?"
"Hohoho… I have listened to everything."
It was then that a familiar voice rang from the doorway.
And then Sebastian entered.
Well, I suppose that was better than eavesdropping from the window.
"So, Mr. Winfield. You believe that it would be inappropriate to work as a servant…while hoping to be a noble one day?"
"Ye-yes. A servant should not think like that…"
Well, since they were talking about how a servant should act, I knew that I should leave the rest to Sebastian.
"A servant's job is to support their master and take care of them in various ways. And in the duke's house, everyone has their own role."
"Yes…"
Some of them took care of Claire directly, while others worked in the kitchen or cleaned the house.
There was a butler who tended to the herb garden and there was a messenger who went to the towns and villages.
"It does not matter if you have feelings of wanting to become a noble. What is necessary is honesty."
"But…"
"Mr. Winfield. Are you saying that you will be dishonest towards Lady Claire or Mr. Takumi?"
"No, I would not be."
"Then everything is fine. You have your own individual way of thinking. But as long as you do your job, then all will be good."
While I had not known Winfield for long, there were no problems when it came to his abilities, and he was a hard worker.
"Besides, Mr. Takumi has no intention of becoming a noble. So if you learn quickly, perhaps you will be recommended?"
"Is-is that so?"
Winfield turned to me in surprise.
"Yes. While the duke and the others are very good to me… I have no wish to be a noble and govern lands. Besides, I would be terrible at it…"
"That would be a waste… With Leo and the fenrirs, no one would be able to go against you…"
"Sebastian. You're just saying that because you know I don't want to."
"Hohoho…"
He chuckled without answering…
