Chapter 33: Ch 33 : Shock
"Hot! hot!"
Ayari hurried out from the kitchen, holding a pot in her hands, and called out in a rush.
Makoto quickly brought over a cloth trivet and placed it on the table for Ayari to set the pot down.
"Phew…" Ayari let out a long sigh of relief and rubbed her hands together.
At that moment, Spi jumped onto the table to check out what was in the pot, but Makoto promptly shooed it away.
Ayari lifted the lid of the pot, releasing a rich aroma of instant noodles into the air.
"Looks pretty good!" she said with satisfaction.
Makoto, who had just brought over bowls and chopsticks, couldn't help but feel a bit speechless.
Ayari had been busy in the kitchen for ages, refusing to let him peek, and he'd thought she was preparing something special.
"What's with that look?" Ayari glared at him.
"You called me over, saying you'd cook for me, and you're giving me instant noodles?" Makoto asked incredulously.
"This is a meal I made myself! Other people don't even get this kind of treatment."
"…"
Makoto sat down helplessly, setting down the bowls and chopsticks.
"Go ahead, give it a try. I even fried three eggs."
"Why'd you fry three eggs?"
"One's for Spi, of course!"
"Woof!"
The instant noodles tasted just like ordinary ones.
However, Ayari had added salt while frying the eggs, and she hadn't spread it evenly, nearly choking Makoto with the first bite.
When Ayari ate her egg, she seemed to notice something was off too.
She nibbled at it for a long time before finally placing her fried egg into Spi's bowl.
"Spi, you can have mine too."
"Woof~"
Makoto: "…"
After finishing the noodles, Ayari went to the sofa to play with Spi, leaving all the pot and dishwashing duties to Makoto without a second thought.
She didn't care at all that he was technically a guest.
Makoto cleaned up everything and, without standing on ceremony, grabbed a drink from the fridge.
"Get me one too," Ayari said, lying on the sofa.
Makoto tossed a can over, and it landed steadily on the coffee table with barely a sound.
Ayari was momentarily stunned at the sight. "That's amazing! How did you do that?"
Makoto sat down across from her and replied, "It's a chakra control technique."
Ayari thought back to a similar incident that had occurred earlier when they were shopping together.
She sat up, picked up the drink can, and suddenly threw it hard in Makoto's direction.
It was as if Makoto had anticipated this.
The can stopped mid-air just as it reached him, then gently landed in his hand.
Ayari was utterly shocked.
She asked again, "How did you do that?"
Makoto casually tossed the can back onto the coffee table, leaned against the sofa, and said nonchalantly, "Call me 'Sensei,' and I'll tell you."
Ayari pouted at his words. "Fine, don't tell me!"
She turned away, scooped up Spi, and said to the dog,
"Some people just don't know how to be grateful.
I wonder who it was that found all those books for him to read."
Makoto sighed and said, "It's vibrations."
Ayari blinked in surprise. "What?"
"Chakra vibrations," Makoto clarified.
As Makoto spoke, he extended a finger, and Ayari saw a small tuft of blue chakra suddenly flicker out from his fingertip like a flame.
Unable to suppress her curiosity, Ayari leaned closer to get a better look.
Makoto caught a faint whiff of her fragrance as she moved nearer.
He placed his finger near the drink can on the coffee table, keeping a centimeter of space between his fingertip and the can.
The blue, flame-like chakra appeared again, and the drink can slid a meter across the table.
Ayari asked, "Did you use chakra to push it away?"
Makoto replied, "No, that's too basic."
Ayari looked confused.
Finding it troublesome to explain the physics behind it, Makoto said,
"To put it simply, I can use chakra vibrations to change the motion of objects in various ways."
Ayari remained puzzled.
Just then, Makoto suddenly opened his palm, and the drink can, now over two meters away, began sliding back toward him on its own.
When it reached the edge of the table, it leaped smoothly into the air and landed perfectly in his hand.
Ayari exclaimed in amazement, "That's incredible! How do you do it?"
Makoto: "…Didn't I just explain?"
Ayari awkwardly replied, "Ah, I mean… what vibrations? I don't get it. Were there any mentions of this in the books I gave you?"
Makoto said, "No, I figured it out myself."
The technological development in this world was so skewed that even those who studied physics couldn't reach the level of understanding he had from his nine years of compulsory education.
Ayari stared at him in awe.
"Makoto, you're… amazing."
Makoto: "I think so too."
Ayari: "…"
The image she had just begun to form of him shattered instantly.
She asked again, "What can you do with these vibrations?"
"Quite a lot."
"For example, if I threw something like a kunai or shuriken at you, could you block it?"
"Yes."
"Could it block ninjutsu?"
"In theory, yes."
Ayari thought for a moment before asking, "Besides blocking and controlling objects, what else can it do?"
Makoto replied, "Use your Byakugan and take a look."
Ayari nodded and activated her Byakugan as instructed.
Instantly, her field of vision transformed.
She saw that within Makoto's raised arm, chakra was flowing continuously, and a thin layer of chakra coated his palm.
Snap!
Makoto snapped his fingers, and in that moment, Ayari noticed the layer of chakra on his palm suddenly compressed together.
A flash of fire appeared.
Ayari was startled.
"F-Fire Release?" she stammered, still shaken.
"It's just fire created from high-temperature friction.
Without flammable material, it went out instantly." Makoto explained.
Judging by Ayari's expression, he could tell she didn't really see what had happened.
The frequency of the chakra vibrations was so high that she couldn't perceive it—and her Byakugan was limited to seeing chakra within living bodies.
"I feel like I understand less and less." Ayari admitted.
Makoto said, "The Byakugan can only see chakra inside the body. It can't see things outside the body."
Ayari tilted her head in confusion. "Things outside the body… like what?"
"The books on sensory techniques that you gave me mention that there's energy beyond human control, existing in the world around us, called natural energy." Makoto explained.
"Natural energy is everywhere. From the moment a person is born to the moment they die, they are surrounded by it. But only highly skilled sensory ninja can perceive it."
"There's a legend that mastering natural energy makes one a sage, granting the power to move mountains, fill seas, and reshape the world."
Ayari couldn't hold back her curiosity and asked, "Can you control it?"
Makoto replied, "No, I can only make it move—like how waving your arm can create a breeze."
Ayari seemed to partially understand but not fully.
Makoto continued, "When performing jutsu, people inevitably consume some chakra. This chakra doesn't just vanish—it's actually converted into natural energy in the environment, which creates the illusion of disappearing."
"Sensory ninjutsu involves detecting chakra before it transforms into natural energy. You can think of natural energy as a medium through which chakra is transferred."
"If too much chakra is released, the conversion into natural energy takes longer, making it detectable even without sensory abilities. Conversely, smaller amounts convert more quickly and are harder to notice."
"This is why you can sense differences in chakra size. It's like pouring a cup of water versus a bucket of water on the ground—the areas they soak will be vastly different."
Ayari scratched her head, unsure whether she understood or not.
"This is getting so confusing. Weren't we talking about vibrations? How did it turn into a discussion about sensory ninjutsu?"
Makoto finally clarified, "The chakra I release outside my body turns into natural energy, but its state of motion doesn't change. That's why I can use my chakra to make the natural energy move."
Seeing Ayari still looking bewildered, he added, "You can think of it as me being able to control the air, control the wind."
He gently waved his hand, and Ayari suddenly felt a strong gust of wind blow toward her.
The wind immediately cleared her mind but also left her hair a complete mess.
"I think… I kind of get it now."
"I didn't expect you to fully understand," Makoto remarked casually.
"Then can you teach me?" Ayari asked.
"Sure. Start by reading all the books you found for me."
"…Never mind, then."
