Chapter 85: Ch 85 : Gain Approval
Minato returned with his team, but unfortunately, they were unable to find any trace of the enemy.
However, the reconnaissance ninjas that had been sent out earlier discovered Kumo ninjas within the Land of Rice.
The reconnaissance, though, did not dare to go too deep and was unable to uncover full intelligence on the Kumo ninjas.
Upon hearing this news, Minato set off alone, without delay, heading toward the Kumo ninja base, intending to cause some chaos there and also gather more information on the enemy's situation.
Given his level of strength and his proficiency in space-time ninjutsu, it was almost impossible for anyone to stop him if he chose to leave.
Minato often took on such tasks.
Unfortunately, due to his personal abilities, he couldn't always turn the tide of the battle, but he certainly caused the enemy a lot of trouble.
The gaps in the border defenses had not been reinforced with soldiers, only a few ninjas had been stationed to monitor the situation.
Konoha was searching for the Kumo ninjas who had infiltrated the country, and it was likely that the enemy was also searching for Konoha's camp, preparing to join forces with the external Kumo ninjas to annihilate Konoha at a critical moment.
With Konoha's current forces, engaging the enemy in a direct confrontation would be like throwing an egg against a rock.
On the day Makoto and Fugaku arrived, there was no major battle with the Kumo ninjas, and they didn't even catch a glimpse of them.
The ninjas in the camp were all preparing for war, with reconnaissance teams being sent out one after another.
As evening approached, they finally made a discovery.
Konoha's patrolling ninjas had captured an enemy scout.
When Makoto arrived at the main tent, he saw a man tied up with five great knots, and Yamanaka Inoichi was trying to infiltrate his mind to extract information.
Soon after, Inoichi furrowed his brow and opened his eyes.
"It's a mental barrier technique, and it's of a high level. If I try to break through it, it might directly cause his death."
The so-called mental barrier technique was specifically designed to defend against mental attacks and intrusions, like those used by Inoichi.
This technique was generally possessed by Anbu ninjas, and learning it required rigorous training to endure mental attacks.
The cost of mastering such techniques was harsh and brutal, but for the sake of preserving intelligence, these hardships were considered tolerable.
The main reason for this was that the Yamnaka clan's mental interrogation techniques were incredibly frightening and efficient, making spies from various countries fearful during past wars.
This also led to the rapid development of mental barrier techniques across the other countries.
Recently, the Yamanaka clan's work had become increasingly difficult.
In order to extract memories from someone's brain, they had to go through one hurdle after another.
Some barriers were simply "walls" that obstructed his exploration, while others would retaliate against his consciousness, and a small mistake could result in injury to himself.
The Yamanaka clan had been researching methods to counter the mental barrier technique, but so far, there had been no significant progress.
"Then let him go back," Makoto suddenly said from the side.
This statement puzzled everyone, and they all furrowed their brows.
Shikaku seemed to be thinking deeply.
"Makoto-kun, what did you say?"
"Let him go back?"
"This guy is the enemy!"
The people around them were in an uproar, questioning Makoto's decision.
Makoto's expression remained calm as he replied, "The enemy has certainly sent more than one scout. If we let him die here, it will inevitably alert the enemy to the area where they lost contact with him."
Inoichi frowned and said, "Letting him go back would only expose us faster."
As he spoke, he suddenly looked over at Shikaku.
The people around them quieted down, all looking at Shikaku, waiting for his decision.
Shikaku asked, "Makoto-kun, are you planning to lure the enemy here?"
Makoto shook his head. "The number of enemies within our borders is still unclear. If there are far more than us, it won't be a case of luring them into a trap, but rather inviting wolves into the house. We can use him to find the enemy's hiding place."
Everyone felt this was too optimistic, but then they heard Makoto continue,
"I can make it so that once he returns to the camp, he won't be able to speak a word of our intelligence."
Shikaku suddenly froze, He thought of a secret technique.
Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal!
This technique, passed down in secret within the root clan, prevents the victim from revealing any restricted information.
This wasn't limited to speech; any attempt to divulge the information would result in complete paralysis of the body.
If forced to fight against it, the person would eventually die.
Shikaku looked at the unconscious Kumo ninja in front of him, thinking for a long time before he spoke.
"It's worth a try."
As he said this, Shikaku's gaze toward Makoto was somewhat meaningful, leaving it hard to read his intentions.
As Makoto had mentioned earlier, even if they killed this man, the enemy would definitely grow cautious after losing a scout and would search the area once again.
Exposure was inevitable, just a matter of time.
Everything made perfect sense.
Then Inoichi also added, "I left my chakra on him. As long as he's not too far away, I'll be able to sense where he goes. As long as the Kumo ninjas are within the Land of Fire, they won't be too far off."
Shikaku then took out a scroll, and when he unrolled it, Makoto recognized the symbol printed on it.
It was the seal of the Flying Thunder God, something he had seen before.
This was the mark of Minato…
Makoto was surprised.
This scroll must have been left to Shikaku by Minato.
Shikaku performed a series of hand seals and imprinted the seal onto the ninja's body.
Afterward, he turned his gaze toward Makoto.
Makoto stepped forward and applied the Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal to the man.
Once everything was done, Shikaku ordered someone to take the ninja and dump him back where he was captured.
The guy had left with one set of debuffs and returned with another.
Inoichi, accompanied by several ninjas skilled in sensory techniques, went to the instruments prepared for him and began his task.
These simple instruments were designed to extend Inoichi's sensory range.
Makoto recalled the massive water orb at the headquarters of the Allied Ninja Forces during the Fourth Great Ninja War in the original story.
It had an even broader range of perception, like a satellite.
Konoha didn't have such technology, which might have been developed through a combination of the techniques from Kumogakure and Kirigakure.
It seemed that only Kumogakure was heavily investing in technological advancements in the entire ninja world.
They had even developed a planet-destroying cannon.
Makoto thought to himself that once the war was over, he would need to pay more attention to this area.
With the limitless chakra available, technological progress would be fast.
However, things didn't develop as everyone had expected.
Inoichi soon removed the instrument, his face dark with displeasure.
He looked at Shikaku and Makoto and said, "The man committed suicide."
Everyone was taken aback and exchanged uneasy glances.
Shikaku sighed. "Looks like we underestimated the enemy's resolve. It's a shame about the scroll Minato left for me."
Makoto furrowed his brow, remaining silent.
The Kumo ninja had been in a state of unconsciousness throughout, unaware of the plans Konoha had for him.
It was likely after awakening that he sensed the changes in his body and became suspicious of Konoha's intentions to let him go.
But for him to act so decisively and commit suicide... that was too extreme.
Makoto stood silently for a long time, finding it difficult to put his thoughts into words.
He struggled to understand the mindset of people in this world, a difference rooted in the education they had received and the disparity in their values.
"If I had known this earlier, I should have tried harder to extract some information from him," he thought.
Some began murmuring softly.
"Yes, this wasn't handled properly."
"It was too hasty."
"This plan wasn't well thought out."
At this point, Shikaku spoke, "This is my fault. I didn't consider everything, and we missed an opportunity to gather information."
Inoichi also shook his head, "The level of the mental barrier in the enemy's mind was high. It's unlikely we could have extracted useful information."
Makoto merely stood calmly, bowing politely to Shikaku and the others, offering some apologetic words, indicating that it was not Shikaku's fault but his own—he had come up with this plan.
Shikaku responded, "There's no need to blame yourself, Makoto-kun. War is unpredictable by nature."
Fugaku stood silently throughout, observing everything but not uttering a word.
Makoto walked out of the main tent, faintly hearing the murmurs of those behind him.
He now held a high position but was still a child, having never shown the strength to match his status.
In the village, everyone treated him with great respect.
On the front lines, everyone is mindful of Lord Hokage, would call him "Lord Makoto."
But this wasn't out of genuine respect; it was simply because he wore the skin of a tiger.
To make others both respect and fear him, he would have to become the true tiger.
