Naruto Birdcage

Chapter 92: Ch 92 : Hidden Pearl

The Konoha forces returned to their previous camp first, finding it mostly intact.

The enemy, realizing their efforts had been in vain, seemed to have retreated in haste.

As night fell, the logistical and medical teams also made their way back.

This battle had cost Konoha over 200 casualties, but they had slain more than 400 enemies, captured over 60, and secured a Jinchuriki.

The severely injured and the fallen were set to be transported back to the village the following morning.

Shikaku immediately sent an urgent message to the village and the Daimyo's office, calling for strengthened border defenses to prevent the remaining Kumo ninja from escaping.

Campfires crackled as they were lit across the camp.

After dinner, groups of soldiers gathered in twos and threes to chat.

Others, less cheerful, sat in silence, perhaps mourning the loss of close comrades.

Makoto could faintly hear people discussing him—those who had been in the battle recounting today's events to the support staff.

The firewood popped and hissed as someone began to dance around the flames, improvising melodies and rhythms as they sang.

It was a scene unique to the aftermath of victory—one that made even the pain of losing comrades feel almost worthwhile.

Who knew how many more grueling battles lay ahead?

Beyond the border, over 7,000 Kumo ninja remained stationed.

The moon hung in a sparse sky, and the world gradually fell into slumber.

Stepping out of his tent, Makoto felt a chill bite into him.

Wrapping his cloak tighter, he moved toward the campfire and warmed himself by its flames.

The dense night enveloped the camp, and Makoto felt a wave of restlessness wash over him.

He lamented how little time he'd been given to grow.

He had thought this war would break out a year later, but fate had not afforded him the chance to prepare adequately.

Makoto wasn't even sure how much power his plans for chakra manipulation would ultimately grant him.

He had considered the Tenseigan.

Having read the original story, Makoto was well aware of its immense power.

But under the current circumstances, pursuing the Tenseigan would merely place him under Orochimaru's watchful eye.

If he exposed too much of his ambitions, he might end up as nothing more than a test subject for Orochimaru's experiments with the Tenseigan.

His relationship with Orochimaru seemed intimate on the surface, but it was nothing more than a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Both were overly rational individuals, and it would be downright foolish to consider Orochimaru a friend just because they had conspired together for a time.

Makoto was useful to Orochimaru.

As long as he didn't display abilities beyond Orochimaru's control, Orochimaru would keep him around, letting him do as he pleased without much concern.

However, if Makoto attempted to research the Tenseigan through Orochimaru and fully disclosed all the secrets of the Byakugan, his life would hang entirely on Orochimaru's whims.

Orochimaru had tried to study the Byakugan before but found no entry point.

This was a trump card Makoto held, knowing full well Orochimaru's peculiar interests.

"Makoto?"

A voice suddenly broke through his thoughts.

Turning his head, Makoto saw it was Rin.

"You're still up this late?" Rin asked as she approached and sat down beside him.

Makoto sighed inwardly. "Guy's snoring is too loud. I'll sleep once I'm tired enough to block it out."

Rin couldn't help but laugh softly.

"What about you? Why aren't you resting?"

"There's a lot to do in the medical unit. Plenty of injured to care for."

"Seems like the logistics work is pretty exhausting."

Rin chuckled lightly. "What's this compared to fighting to the death on the front lines?"

The flickering firelight danced on their faces, and Rin noticed that Makoto's gaze remained fixed on the flames.

He seemed to have something on his mind.

Gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Rin said, "I've heard about what you did today."

"Oh, really?"

Rin marveled, "I was so surprised! I didn't think you were that strong. And you can even fly…"

Makoto couldn't help but laugh.

A lot of people seemed fascinated by his ability to fly.

"Do you want to try it?" he asked.

Rin was startled. "Huh?"

Makoto stood up by the fire, brushing the dust off his clothes.

As Rin processed his words, she hurriedly stood up, a little flustered.

"Get ready. We're taking off," Makoto said.

"What do you mean 'get ready'—ah!"

Before Rin could react, Makoto grabbed her wrist firmly and, with a swift motion, shot up into the sky.

He didn't choose to ascend slowly; the sudden, sharp movement made Rin gasp in surprise.

By the time she regained her senses, they were already several meters above the camp.

Rin, still shaken, had her face flushed with embarrassment and was panting.

"How does it feel?"

"Makoto, you scared me to death…"

Makoto slowly released Rin's wrist, and Rin, feeling panicked, flailed around in the air for a moment.

When she realized she wasn't falling, she felt a little reassured.

They were now about two meters apart in the air, and Makoto, still smiling lightly, asked again, "How does it feel?"

Rin looked incredibly nervous, frequently glancing down and then looking back at Makoto.

"It's… amazing…"

After saying that, she suddenly felt her body moving involuntarily in the air.

She saw that Makoto had only moved one finger, and it felt as though her body was being controlled by a remote.

To her surprise, Makoto quickly twirled his finger in the air, tracing a circle, and Rin's body followed, spinning around once.

"Ah—"

The sudden mischievous act made Rin scream, but fortunately, Makoto had toned down her voice a little, so it didn't disturb anyone else's rest.

"Makoto, how could you do this?!"

She clasped her hands over her skirt, her face turning bright red.

Although she was wearing pants underneath, which prevented any accidental exposure, the behavior that caused her to lose composure made her very angry.

"Didn't you want to fly?" Makoto asked.

"I want to go down now." Rin pursed her lips and said.

Looking at her like this, Makoto felt much better.

Suddenly, with a mischievous grin, he said, "It's not that easy. How about you shout 'Lord Makoto' and let me hear it?"

In the camp, there were plenty of people calling him "Lord Makoto."

If he hadn't allowed Rin to address him by his name without honorifics from the start, she might have called him "Lord Makoto" too by now.

But at this moment, making her call him that was clearly just teasing her.

"You—" Rin's heart raced with anger.

She knew it was just a prank, but the way he did it made her feel very uncomfortable.

At this moment, Makoto suddenly stretched and yawned. "It's so cold, I'm going to bed."

As he said that, he made as if to leave Rin alone in mid-air.

Rin instantly panicked. "Wait a minute!"

She tried to grab Makoto, but with no solid ground in the air, her arms flailed helplessly.

"Makoto..."

"What?"

Rin bit her lip, her face slightly red as she turned her head away.

"Lord Makoto..."

Makoto suddenly moved closer to her, grinning. "Just teasing you. But calling me 'Lord Makoto' isn't so bad, is it?"

Rin, flustered at his close proximity, tried to move away.

"You're too rude! How can you treat a girl like this!"

"Looks like no one's ever treated you like this before."

Makoto said, then suddenly grabbed her wrist again.

"Let's go. I'll let you try real flying!"

"I don't want to—ah!"

......

In the Uchiha clan's quarters, Obito yawned as he walked out, planning to find a quiet spot to relieve himself, having drunk too much water before bed.

In his dazed state, he caught a glimpse of two figures high in the sky.

He shook his head and rubbed his eyes, trying to focus.

The only one who could fly was probably Makoto, but the other figure seemed somewhat familiar...

Obito felt a wave of envy.

If only he could fly like that, taking Rin up in the sky with him.

He imagined Rin nestled in his arms, soaring through the sky together, and for a moment, he found himself lost in thought.
