Chapter 6: Chapter 6: FIRST MISSION
Chapter 6: FIRST MISSION **
Just as Kirito made that decision, a screen popped up in front of him.
It was a system screen, and it displayed a mission:
Mission:
Objective – Escape from Danzo's notice.
Reward – Shop and point system unlock + 10 SP (System Points).
Failure – Life as a Root shinobi.
Third-person POV
Yes, what Kirito saw was none other than Danzo—the walking definition of "trust issues," the man who thought emotions were an optional DLC. He had personally come to select children for Root The darkness of konoha , the organization he had started building not long ago. This was happening before the academy entrance test, which was two months away—not that Kirito knew that yet.
Danzo stood motionless, his one visible eye scanning the children like a merchant inspecting goods. Behind him, several Root shinobi maintained their usual blank expressions, because showing emotions was apparently against their religion
Kirito's POV
Kirito stared at the screen, blinking. "Wow. A mission. With actual life-and-death stakes. I love how my life is just a ninja-themed survival horror game now."
He wanted to believe this was just a bad dream. Maybe he'd wake up in a warm bed with a loving family. Or at least some good food. But no, reality was standing right there, wrapped in bandages, oozing menace, and going by the name of Danzo.
Despite his bravado, he was still somewhat happy. If the shop unlocked, maybe—just maybe—he could find a cure for his bloodlines. That thought gave him some hope.
Before he could finish his inner monologue, one of the Root shinobi standing behind Danzo spoke up, ordering all the children to form a line. One by one, they were called forward. A sensor-nin maybe was checking each child's chakra, after which they were sent to either the left or the right.
Kirito quickly noticed the pattern: those on the left had more chakra, making them a higher priority for selection. Those on the right had less chakra and were likely deemed unfit for Root. His suspicion was confirmed when he saw a girly-looking blonde boy standing on the right. If his memory served him right, that very blonde should have a relatively small chakra reserve.
Then came Kirito's turn.
His heart pounded in his chest. He knew he had the chakra level of a genin—an extraordinary amount for a five-year-old. While it wasn't as much as Naruto's, it was still uncommon. As expected, root ninja looked at him and said
"You, left."
Kirito's soul nearly left his body. NOOOO! I'M TOO YOUNG TO BE DRAFTED INTO THE SECRET EVIL GOVERNMENT! His body moved on autopilot as he stepped to the left, mentally spiraling. Okay, okay, think. How do I make myself look unimportant? Play dumb? No, I already look like a dumb five-year-old, that's not gonna help. Get sick? Maybe fake a seizure? Wait—DOES ROOT EVEN HAVE SICK DAYS?!
For once, he couldn't even come up with a joke. His brain was running on pure survival instinct.
As he stood in the 'priority selection' group. His mind was racing, scrambling for a way out of this mess. While he was frantically thinking of a plan, the rest of the children continued to be sorted based on their chakra levels.
Once the sorting was done, the next phase began. The children were taken outside for a physical test. Their task? Running laps around the orphanage. The ground surrounding the orphanage was roughly 400 meters in circumference. The five-year-olds ran in groups, some managing ten laps, while others struggled to complete even one and this very child who wasn't even able to complete one lap was ofcourse Kirito.
It was Kirito's time to shine—or, in this case, flop.
If actors saw his performance, they would collectively quit their jobs out of shame. He decided to go all in. Huffing, puffing, and gasping like he had just run a 10 km marathon, he exaggerated every movement. Twice—very purposefully—he tripped and fell right in front of Danzo, flopping dramatically as if he were on his last breath.
"Water… tell my non-existent family… I love them…" he wheezed, dragging himself forward an entire inch before collapsing again.
Danzo didn't react, but one of the Root shinobi twitched. Kirito took that as a win.
As the test continued, Kirito became more theatrical. When another kid passed him effortlessly, he dramatically clutched his chest as if suffering from a heart attack. "I… I can't… the world… is fading…" he whispered hoarsely, rolling onto his back for added effect.
One Root shinobi seemed slightly confused, perhaps wondering how a child could be this utterly useless. Another simply walked past him without a word, as if Kirito were nothing more than a rock on the track.
Most of the children—NO!!—all of them, managed at least five or six laps. Kirito watched in growing horror as some ran over two kilometers without breaking a sweat. Those who pushed themselves to four kilometers? Straight-up monsters compared to children on Earth.
Okay, but seriously, what are these kids taking? Ninja protein shakes?!
He coughed weakly and dramatically reached out towards the sky. "I… I see the light… tell… tell the Hokage I fought bravely…"
One of the Root shinobi tilted their head slightly, perhaps debating whether to just drag him off the course. Danzo, still unreadable, merely shifted his gaze away as if Kirito were too pathetic to acknowledge.
Kirito mentally grinned. Yes! That's exactly what I want! Ignore me, I'm just weak, useless, and totally not worth your time!
At one point, he even fake-fainted mid-run. Sprawled out on the ground, he let his tongue loll out dramatically. A nearby kid hesitated before stepping over him, muttering, "Wow, he's really bad at this."
And so, while others proved their potential, Kirito dedicated himself to what was truly important—convincing Danzo that he was the last person anyone would ever want in a secret black ops unit.
The test continued, but in Kirito's mind, "Operation: Be Completely Useless" was an undeniable success.
