Chapter 80: Chapter 80: The Time Lag
A voice was it murmuring to itself, or sneering in contempt? It was impossible to tell. Detached, yet laced with laughter. Unsettling. Strangely unnatural.
Then, through the curtain of dust, Danzō stepped forward. His lips curled upward.
"So this is the extent of your power? Hmph. Even stronger than that Kakashi brat."
There was something oddly approving in his tone.
Kakashi becoming a jōnin at thirteen had already earned him the title of prodigy. Yet Neji same age, same world was already nearing the level of a Kage. It was unbelievable.
Even the legendary First Hokage and Uchiha Madara might not have been much more at his age. Given enough time, this boy might actually become a shinobi who could rival them both.
But even so, a gap still remained between him and true Kage-class.
And that gap was all the opening Danzō needed.
Such power had to be tamed, controlled. He had to grasp it in his palm, make it obey his will. After all, only someone like him was worthy of mastering it.
"Heh... who would've thought someone as cold-blooded as you would hand out compliments, Danzō. That's a first," Neji replied with a mirthless smile, eyes icy.
He knew exactly what Danzō was thinking.
Even with all his preparation, the realization that he was being treated like a lab rat made his stomach twist.
"Hyūga Neji," Danzō sneered, "I won't ask where your Wood Release comes from. That no longer matters."
Neji narrowed his eyes.
He watched as Danzō drew two shuriken and infused them with wind chakra.
Instantly, their edges sharpened to a lethal gleam, the same as his kunai from before except this time, their speed and range surged dramatically.
A low chuckle escaped Danzō's lips as he tightened his grip on the weapons now wrapped in wind.
"Wind Style: Shuriken!"
With a forceful flick, he sent them flying.
He wouldn't kill Neji not yet. But severing his limbs, leaving him broken and helpless? That much, he could manage.
As long as the boy lived, that was enough.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
The two shuriken tore through the air like scythes, slicing cleanly through the ground in their path. Everything they passed split apart stones sheared so smooth they gleamed like polished mirrors.
It was horrifying.
These weren't ordinary stones. They were debris from Root's underground base materials Danzō had meticulously chosen for their terrifying durability. Even Neji's monstrous strength had trouble breaking them, relying instead on the Hundred Seal technique to blast through the final barrier.
And yet now...
They were cut apart like wet paper. Not even the slightest resistance. It was chilling.
Even Neji's brow furrowed ever so slightly. He didn't dare let his guard down.
Thinking back, in the original timeline, no one had ever forcibly taken this move head-on. But the sheer force of it now far exceeded what he'd imagined.
"So by infusing weapons with chakra of a matching nature, you enhance their capabilities... It's similar to essence refinement," Neji murmured.
He flipped mid-air, twisting his body through the narrow gap between the shuriken, narrowly avoiding them.
"Perhaps... I could use this technique myself," he mused. "If done right, it might even slice through Susano'o. It could become a deadly new trump card."
But then
"Wait... What's that?"
Cold sweat trickled down Neji's spine. His eyes widened.
Thread. Fine, nearly invisible threads were coiled around the shuriken.
"Damn!"
His heart dropped. He flipped again, trying to dodge, but Danzō had anticipated this.
He hadn't planned on reeling the weapons back immediately.
"Could it be...?"
A faint strand of chakra thread coiled around Neji's fingers. He shifted his body in midair, twisting into a defensive stance.
"Vacuum Wave? Vacuum Serial Waves? Or maybe... the Giant Vacuum Sphere?"
His Byakugan locked onto Danzō, ready for anything.
But then he saw it
The subtle curl at the corner of Danzō's lips.
Just that tiny movement and Neji felt as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over his head.
"You guessed wrong," Danzō said coolly, his tone laced with twisted excitement.
Then, with a sharp tug, both wind-charged shuriken reversed direction spinning back toward Neji.
"Time lag attack!" Danzō roared, his grin widening.
Neji had a full 360-degree field of vision but at this moment, he was suspended in midair. He could see the attack.
But his body couldn't react in time.
"I've studied your clans for years," Danzō growled. "Whether Uchiha or Hyūga... I know how to crush every last one of you. Bloodline limits hmph. Nothing but a joke."
"Danzō! Stop!"
A sharp voice suddenly rang out.
Tsunade burst into view, fury etched across her face. Dark markings traced over her skin it was clear she had activated her Strength of a Hundred Seal.
She had rushed here with a team the moment the sounds of battle reached them, alarmed by the fierce chakra surging through the wreckage.
And now, the sight that met her eyes: Neji and Danzō in combat Danzō with the clear upper hand, Neji on the verge of death.
There was no time to hesitate.
Tsunade immediately focused her chakra into a single point, mustering enough force to deflect one of the incoming shuriken.
At the same moment, Hyūga Hiashi activated his Byakugan. His figure blurred, moving faster than the eye could follow. He reached out with an open palm, ready to intercept the second wind-shrouded shuriken with a blow of refined Gentle Fist chakra.
"Hmph. Tsunade. You haven't even become Hokage yet, and you're already defending an attacker of Root?" Danzō barked coldly. "And you, Hiashi. Will you betray the village for your clan?"
He didn't seem surprised by their arrival.
With a battle of this scale, it would've been impossible for the upper echelons not to sense it. In fact, he had been expecting them. What surprised him more was how late they were.
To Danzō, their delayed arrival reeked of political posturing deliberate hesitation. They wanted someone else to weaken Root, to cut him down a peg, to curb his power.
But no one expected Root to be destroyed.
It had cost him decades of meticulous effort. Even if he'd treated Root as a mere tool, it had been his tool. Its destruction enraged him.
So now, seeing their faces, he had no intention of hiding his contempt.
Tsunade and Hiashi froze.
His words had hit like a slap across the face.
Root... was destroyed by Neji?
A buzzing silence rang in their minds. Their vision blurred. It felt unreal like a dream.
And just like that, their imposing aura weakened.
"How... How could it come to this?"
Root might not have been popular, but it had always been a key part of Konoha's defense. For it to be brought down like this by Neji...
That was a high crime.
Even if Tsunade became Hokage, she couldn't simply erase a sin of this magnitude.
"Hmph." Danzō sneered.
He didn't bother sparing them another glance.
He'd never cared for them. They had always stood in his way.
But soon, they'll all be gone.
Anyone who refuses to follow me... has no right to exist.
And as for Neji he was beyond saving.
