Chapter 46: Abyssborn Reckoning
A suffocating silence loomed over the battlefield, the kind that settled in the wake of devastation. The broken remains of the temple stood jagged against the darkened sky, the eerie glow of Void Release lingering in the air. Shin Noragetsu stood amidst the rubble, his Abyss Eye gleaming with an unnatural light.
His heartbeat was steady, but his muscles remained tense. Something was coming. He could feel it in the air—an unshakable pressure pressing against his very soul.
A gust of wind carried the scent of ash and something darker, something ancient. Then, from the abyss, a figure emerged.
The void shifted, a distortion in reality itself, as an entity took form before him. A towering specter, its body a swirling mass of darkness, like a rip in existence itself. It had no defined face, no eyes, yet its presence was overwhelming. The air vibrated with its sheer energy, tendrils of void energy stretching outward like grasping fingers.
Shin clenched his blade tighter. This was no ordinary opponent.
"You have come far," the entity intoned, its voice like a chorus of whispers layered atop one another. "Yet, you stand at the edge of oblivion, Noragetsu. Do you have the strength to resist?"
Shin exhaled slowly, his gaze locked onto the creature. "I've resisted worse."
Without hesitation, he moved.
His body blurred as he lunged forward, blade igniting with abyssal energy. The shadows around him seemed to twist unnaturally, but he ignored them. His focus was singular. Strike. End it.
The creature responded instantly. A massive tendril lashed out toward him, moving faster than a mortal eye could track. Shin twisted mid-air, narrowly evading the attack as he brought his sword down in a precise arc. His blade met resistance as it clashed against the entity's shifting form.
For a brief moment, nothing happened.
Then, the air exploded.
A shockwave erupted from the point of contact, sending Shin hurtling backward. He flipped midair, landing on the crumbling stone with a controlled slide. The void around the creature pulsed wildly, undeterred.
Shin barely had time to react before the next attack came.
Tendrils of darkness erupted from the ground beneath him, twisting and reaching, their tips sharpened like spears. He vaulted over the first strike, then slashed through the second. But the abyss was relentless. More tendrils formed in rapid succession, forcing him into a desperate dance of dodging and countering.
His breathing was measured, his body moving on instinct. But he knew he couldn't keep this up forever.
The entity watched, silent, observing. Then, without warning, it shifted.
A deep, resonating hum filled the air. The darkness began to condense, twisting and compacting into something denser, something more dangerous. The figure's form became more defined, its presence more suffocating. The void energy surged, expanding outward like an ocean threatening to swallow everything.
Shin's Abyss Eye pulsed in response.
This is it.
The creature raised an arm—if it could even be called that—and the very air distorted.
A moment later, reality itself shattered.
A wave of abyssal destruction surged toward Shin, a force that consumed light and matter alike. There was no dodging it, no blocking it. His mind worked at impossible speed, searching for an answer, a countermeasure.
Then, he found it.
Instead of resisting, he embraced the abyss.
Shin's body flickered, his form dissolving into shadows as he merged with the void. The wave passed through him, tearing through the ruins behind him and reducing them to nothingness.
For a split second, he felt weightless, bodiless. He was no longer bound by physical constraints. He had become one with the abyss.
And then, he reformed.
Behind the entity.
His blade was already in motion.
With a single, fluid strike, he cleaved through the void. A brilliant arc of energy surged from his weapon, tearing through the entity's form. The creature let out a sound—not a scream, but something deeper, something more ancient. A distorted roar that echoed through the very fabric of space.
The darkness recoiled. The tendrils convulsed, retreating as the entity staggered. Its form wavered, unstable.
Shin didn't hesitate.
He pressed forward, his blade a blur as he unleashed a relentless assault. Each strike landed true, carving through the abyssal mass with precise, measured force. Sparks of void energy crackled with each impact, the fabric of reality itself bending under the strain.
The entity lashed out in desperation, but its movements had become sluggish, erratic. It was weakening.
With one final, decisive motion, Shin drove his blade into its core.
The abyss screamed.
A surge of raw energy exploded outward, engulfing them both. Shin gritted his teeth as the force tore at him, but he didn't let go. His grip remained firm, his resolve unwavering.
Then, silence.
The darkness began to dissolve, unraveling like threads pulled from a tapestry. The entity's form flickered, then faded, leaving behind nothing but empty space.
Shin exhaled, lowering his blade. His body ached, his energy drained, but he remained standing. He had won.
As the last remnants of the void dissipated, he turned away, stepping forward into the unknown.
