Chapter 52: The Abyss Stirs Once More
The weight of his newfound power settled in Shin's core as he and Raiden stood amidst the battlefield's eerie silence. The sky above was a swirling void, thick clouds veiling the moon's pale light. The echoes of their recent clash still lingered in the air, whispers of the abyss retreating into the shadows.
Shin adjusted his grip on his katana, its blade humming with residual void energy. Raiden eyed him warily, his stance cautious. The battle with the abyssal entity had left its mark—not just on the land but on Shin himself. He could feel it in his blood, in his bones. The void was no longer just an external force. It was inside him.
"You've changed," Raiden finally spoke, his voice measured.
Shin didn't deny it. "I had to."
Before more words could be exchanged, the ground trembled beneath them. A pulse, deep and foreboding, surged through the battlefield. The air thickened, charged with an ominous energy. Raiden tensed, his fingers twitching near his blade's hilt.
Then, a fissure tore through the earth, and from its depths, a monstrous form emerged. It was unlike anything they had faced before—a shifting mass of darkness, its core pulsating with abyssal fire. Eyes, countless and glowing, opened across its surface, each one gazing hungrily at Shin.
"You belong to us now."
The voice resonated through the air, a chorus of whispers and roars, all speaking as one. Shin felt it clawing at the edges of his mind, a force greater than the void entity he had defeated before.
Raiden stepped forward, drawing his sword. "This thing… It's stronger."
Shin nodded. Stronger, smarter, and more relentless. But he wasn't the same as before, either.
The entity lunged, tendrils of darkness snapping toward them. Shin and Raiden moved in unison, their blades cutting through the void-born limbs. Each strike sent ripples through the creature's form, but it reformed just as quickly, adapting, learning.
Shin knew brute force wouldn't work. He had to control the abyss, not fight against it.
Taking a steady breath, he closed his eyes and reached inward. The void whispered, eager to consume, but this time, he didn't resist. Instead, he guided it, molding it to his will.
His katana darkened, the metal absorbing the void's essence. When he opened his eyes, they burned with abyssal energy. The creature hesitated, sensing the shift in power.
Then, Shin moved.
His blade cut through the entity, but instead of merely dispersing it, the void within him latched onto its essence. The creature shrieked, struggling, but Shin tightened his grip. The abyss wasn't devouring him—he was devouring it.
Raiden stepped back, watching in stunned silence as the massive form began to shrink, its energy siphoned into Shin's body. The last echoes of its scream faded, and then, there was nothing but silence.
Shin exhaled, the energy settling within him. He had won. Not just against the creature, but against the abyss itself.
Raiden sheathed his blade, his expression unreadable. "That was…" He trailed off, shaking his head. "You're not the same Shin I knew."
Shin met his gaze. "No. I'm not."
For better or worse, the abyss was now his to command.
But deep inside, he knew this was only the beginning. The void had stirred once more, and soon, it would awaken fully.
And when it did, the world would never be the same.
