Naruto: Legacy of the Void

Chapter 54: When the Abyss Devours the Light

The battlefield was drenched in shadows, the only source of illumination being the eerie glow emanating from Shin Noragetsu's Abyss Eye. His katana, now infused with the void's essence, pulsed with untamed energy, reacting to the ever-present darkness that loomed over the ruins. The Herald of the Void, a monstrous entity of shifting abyssal tendrils, stood motionless for a brief moment, as if sensing the change within Shin.

Then, it lunged.

Shin didn't hesitate. With a speed that left even Kaede momentarily stunned, he sidestepped the attack, his katana slicing through the void-formed mass with pinpoint precision. Unlike before, the Herald didn't simply absorb the strike. Instead, its form split apart, chunks of dark matter falling away, only to be replaced by even more writhing tendrils.

Kaede gritted her teeth as she watched. "His attacks are landing now, but it's not enough."

Hoshirama, his Byakugan active, analyzed the shifting battlefield. "That creature is adapting too quickly. Every time Shin strikes, it regenerates stronger than before."

Satoshi, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke. "Then he needs to stop fighting on its terms."

Shin wasn't listening to them. He was already too deep into the fight, his body moving on instinct. The Abyss Eye granted him a heightened perception, allowing him to see the subtle movements of the void's energy before the Herald even struck. He weaved through the attacks, his katana carving through the shadows with ruthless efficiency.

But something was wrong.

With every clash, he could feel it—the abyss inside him growing stronger, its whispers no longer just distant murmurs. They were beginning to take shape, forming coherent words, each one more tempting than the last.

Let go.

You cannot fight what you are.

Become the abyss.

Shin ground his teeth, pushing back against the invasive thoughts. "Not now."

The Herald sensed his hesitation. It capitalized on the moment, launching a massive tendril straight at him. Shin barely managed to react, bringing up his blade in time to block, but the sheer force sent him skidding backward, his boots digging trenches into the ruined earth.

Kaede dashed forward, her blade slicing through another set of tendrils attempting to ensnare Shin. "Focus, Shin! Stay with us!"

He exhaled sharply, nodding. "I know. Just… keep that thing off my back for a second."

Kaede didn't question him. She and Hoshirama moved in unison, keeping the Herald occupied as Shin took a step back, centering himself.

The whispers were growing louder.

He clenched his fists, trying to suppress the abyssal energy coursing through his veins. But deep down, he knew the truth. If he kept resisting, he wouldn't be able to keep up. The Herald was evolving mid-battle, and unless he did the same… he would lose.

A deep breath.

A single decision.

Shin closed his eyes.

Then, he let go.

The transformation wasn't immediate, but the effect was undeniable. The void chakra within him surged outward, coiling around his body like an ethereal cloak. His katana darkened further, the edges distorting as if reality itself was warping around it. When he opened his eyes, the Abyss Eye burned with an intensity that made even the Herald hesitate.

Kaede's breath caught in her throat. "Shin…?"

But he didn't respond.

Instead, he moved.

In a flash, Shin was upon the Herald, his blade striking with an efficiency that transcended human limits. Each slash tore through the void-born entity, leaving behind wounds that didn't regenerate. The Herald shrieked, its form beginning to destabilize, fragments of darkness breaking off and dissipating into nothingness.

Hoshirama watched in awe. "His attacks are bypassing its regeneration. He's striking at its core."

Satoshi, however, wasn't convinced. "No… look at his chakra."

Kaede's eyes widened as she realized what Satoshi meant. The abyssal energy surrounding Shin wasn't just affecting the Herald. It was consuming him too. His breathing had changed, his movements becoming almost unnatural, as if he was less of a person and more of a force of destruction.

Then, for the first time, Shin spoke.

But it wasn't his voice.

"The light falters before the abyss."

The Herald roared in defiance, lashing out with its remaining strength. A massive tendril shot toward Shin, intent on crushing him, but he didn't dodge.

He caught it.

With a single, fluid motion, he ripped the tendril apart, void energy crackling around his fingers. The Herald recoiled, and Shin didn't give it a chance to recover. He raised his katana, and in one final, devastating strike, he cleaved the entity in half.

A deafening silence followed.

The Herald's form convulsed before finally disintegrating, its abyssal mass dissolving into the air like scattered embers. The battlefield fell still, the oppressive energy lifting ever so slightly.

But Shin remained motionless.

Kaede took a cautious step forward. "Shin?"

No response.

His Abyss Eye was still glowing, his body rigid, the void energy still coursing through him.

Satoshi cursed under his breath. "He's not stopping."

Then, Shin lifted his gaze toward them.

And for the first time, his expression was unreadable.

Kaede felt a chill run down her spine. "Shin… snap out of it."

But he took a step forward, and in that moment, she knew—

The abyss had devoured something inside him.

And they might not be able to bring him back.
