Chapter 135: 135
The flames showed no signs of abating, threatening to spread endlessly. The proctors on duty quickly intervened, using Water Style jutsu to douse the inferno. As the steam cleared, Yoroi Akadō's nearly incinerated body was revealed, lying motionless in the center of the arena.
Sasuke's ruthless display shocked everyone present. The other Genin, in particular, had never witnessed such an advanced Fire Style jutsu—a technique that locked onto its target, making evasion all but impossible.
"Is that… is that the power of the Uchiha?" Choji Akimichi was so terrified that he nearly collapsed against the railing, his face pale. "Please, don't match me with any of them!"
Nara Shikamaru wiped a bead of cold sweat from his forehead. "It seems the rumors were true. The Uchiha clan is as powerful as they say."
Kiba muttered, "The main thing is, he fought to kill! He went for the fatal blow without a second thought, just like those Sand ninja!"
After just one battle, some of the remaining candidates were already considering forfeiting. Losing your life over an exam suddenly seemed like a very real, and very foolish, possibility.
Watching as Yoroi was carried from the field by medical-nin, Asuma Sarutobi muttered softly, "Well, that's something you don't see every day. I've never seen a Fire Style jutsu like that before. What was that technique?"
Hiruzen Sarutobi's expression darkened. "It's understandable that you don't. That technique is the Dragon Flame Song Jutsu. It has been a very long time since I have seen it used." Deep within the recesses of his memory, Hiruzen recalled the last person he had seen use that jutsu: Uchiha Madara. He had only been a child then. He had thought the technique long lost, but now, he had witnessed it again.
"What in the world happened to the Uchiha clan in the years since they left this village?"
"Or… have they been hiding their true strength all this time?"
"Fugaku Uchiha, you have truly impressed me…" A dark plan, one that even Hiruzen found distasteful, began to brew quietly in his mind.
"Cough… cough…"
After the arena was cleared, Gekko Hayate coughed lightly and announced, his breath weak, "The winner of the first match is Uchiha Sasuke. Next is the second match."
As the large screen continued to scroll, two new names appeared.
"The second match is Zaku Abumi versus Shino Aburame. Please step forward."
Zaku Abumi cracked his knuckles, a clicking sound echoing in the silent arena. His arms had been specially modified to release powerful blasts of air pressure. Aburame Shino remained silent as always, his high-collared jacket obscuring most of his face, leaving only his dark sunglasses visible.
"Begin!"
Zaku took the initiative, leaping high into the air and aiming his arms at Shino. "Zankūha!" A powerful blast of air pressure roared toward Shino, but he remained perfectly still. From his sleeves, a swarm of kikaichū insects emerged, forming a living shield that completely absorbed the blast.
"What?" Zaku's eyes widened.
"Bug Sphere," Shino whispered, and his insects quickly swarmed toward Zaku.
Zaku relentlessly unleashed wave after wave of his Zankūha, but each attack was simply consumed by the wall of insects. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead as his modified arms began to make unstable, whining sounds.
"It's useless," Shino said, pushing his sunglasses up slightly. "My insects can absorb chakra. Your attacks only make them stronger."
Zaku gritted his teeth and suddenly changed his strategy, moving quickly to try and get behind Shino. But Shino was one step ahead; his insects had already laid a tight net beneath the arena floor.
"It's over." Shino raised a hand, and the bugs instantly swarmed Zaku, wrapping around him.
"Ahhh!" Zaku screamed in agony as his modified arms began to crumble under the gnawing of the chakra-devouring insects.
Seeing this, Gekko Hayate immediately announced, "The winner is Aburame Shino!"
