Chapter 140: 140
The preliminary arena was buzzing with nervous energy. All eyes were on the large screen, a silent prayer on every candidate's lips. The Uchiha clan's strength had been made terrifyingly clear, and no one wanted to be the one to face Shiro, the last of their team who had yet to fight.
As the scrolling names came to a halt, Gekko Hayate announced weakly, "Will Kiba Inuzuka and Naruto Uzumaki please come down to the arena."
Kiba and Akamaru stood on one side of the field, Kiba flashing a confident, feral grin while Akamaru barked excitedly. On the other side, Naruto clenched his fists, his eyes burning with a fierce fighting spirit.
"Naruto, don't let me down," Kiba taunted. "Akamaru and I are a lot stronger than we look."
"Save your breath!" Naruto shot back, his own bravado on full display. "I'm definitely going to beat you!"
Gekko Hayate, standing at the side, coughed. "The eighth match, Kiba Inuzuka versus Naruto Uzumaki, begin!"
Kiba attacked first, his hands flying through a series of seals. "Beast Human Clone!" Akamaru leaped onto Kiba's back, instantly transforming into a perfect copy of his master. The two Kibas rushed toward Naruto, their movements a blur of speed.
"Shadow Clone Jutsu!" Naruto quickly formed his own seals, and several clones of himself appeared, meeting Kiba and Akamaru's charge head-on. The arena dissolved into a chaotic flurry of fists and kicks as the clones clashed. In the midst of the chaos, the real Kiba slipped through Naruto's defenses, landing a heavy punch to his abdomen.
BAM!
Naruto was sent flying, rolling several times across the ground before he managed to steady himself. He wiped a trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth, the fire in his eyes burning even brighter.
"Not bad, Naruto," Kiba said with a grin. "You can still stand. It seems that traitor father of yours has actually taught you a thing or two. But… I haven't even gotten serious yet. This is just the warm-up."
"My dad is not a traitor!" Naruto shouted, his voice filled with rage.
Kiba scratched his head, his expression nonchalant. "Hmph, that's not for you to decide. The whole village knows that the Uchiha's successful defection had a lot to do with your father. He was once Hokage, a disgrace to the title!"
"Shut up!"
Naruto was completely consumed by his fury. More shadow clones materialized on the field, surrounding Kiba and Akamaru.
"What's the point of having more of you? Watch me destroy every single one of your clones!" Kiba said with disdain. "Let's go, Akamaru!"
"Take this! The ultimate beast-human taijutsu: Fang Over Fang!"
"You fool. This is just the opening act!" Naruto, hidden amongst his clones, grinned. With the help of two clones, a swirling, concentrated sphere of chakra began to form in his hand.
"Oh?" Kiba recognized the technique. Naruto had shown it off once before, during the first exam.
"It's… the Rasengan!"
All the Jonin present, including the Third Hokage, were shocked when they saw the technique.
"Naruto actually mastered the Rasengan? That jutsu is powerful enough to kill!"
"He's just a kid! He doesn't know how to hold back! Did Minato actually teach him that? What in the world was he thinking?!"
"Someone needs to stop him! If Kiba gets hit by that, he'll be killed! The Inuzuka clan might even rebel over Minato's foolishness!"
The panicked voices of the Jonin reached Hiruzen Sarutobi's ears. He took the pipe from his mouth and spoke slowly, his voice calm and steady. "Do not panic. The battle is not yet over. Kiba is a capable boy. To stop the exam now would only be a blow to his pride."
"Let the battle continue. I will intervene if necessary."
