Chapter 45: Chapter 45: The Flower Shop Girl
Chapter 45: The Flower Shop Girl
The scorching midday heat of summer was unbearable. The lingering discomfort after lunch only made it worse.
"Hey, Tsubaki, you should hurry up and learn Ice Release. Make some ice for us—it'd be much cooler that way."
The technological advancements in this world were bizarrely skewed. The power system was still stuck at steam engines, yet movies were widespread, and electricity was commonly used. There were even primitive computers—bulky and sluggish, but functional enough to rival the early vacuum-tube models of Mizuki's previous life. Surveillance systems, medical equipment, and other technological applications weren't particularly shocking either.
And yet, despite all this progress, air conditioning hadn't been widely adopted. It was absurd.
"Without a Kekkei Genkai, mastering Ice Release is nearly impossible," Tsubaki replied as she glanced at the restless Mizuki.
Ice Release was theoretically a combination of Water and Wind Release, but in practice, it was incredibly difficult to master. Mizuki couldn't recall anyone successfully achieving Ice Release through conventional methods. It was already extremely challenging, and if someone lacked an affinity for Water and Wind chakra, their chances of succeeding were about as high as Mizuki becoming the Fifth Hokage.
Tsubaki's chakra affinities, however, were far superior to Mizuki's simple Fire Release. She possessed Wind, Water, and Lightning affinities. If she weren't his fiancée, Mizuki might have been driven mad with jealousy.
"Water Release, fine. But Wind and Lightning? That doesn't fit her personality. She's not the violent type…"
Setting aside his mild concern over Tsubaki's potential hidden temperament, she continued fanning herself with a folding fan, occasionally directing a breeze toward Mizuki.
One might ask—why weren't they sitting close together and fanning themselves?
Simple.
"There's no air conditioning. If we sit together, we'll overheat!"
"The flower shop has been closed for a few days. Since we have time today, let's go check on it this afternoon," Tsubaki suggested.
"Eh? It's so hot—who would even visit a flower shop in this weather?" Mizuki grumbled. "Staring at me won't change my mind. I'm staying home to escape the heat."
"If we don't go soon, the flowers will start wilting. I'm going."
"Alright, alright, we'll go." Faced with Tsubaki's big, pleading eyes, Mizuki eventually relented.
"Is it just my imagination, or has she been much stricter with me since I got injured in the Land of Waves?"
Just as Mizuki was lamenting the loss of his fiancée's former gentle obedience, she continued, "Since we're free for the next few days, let's not hire any extra workers. The two of us can manage the shop just fine."
That sentence immediately made Mizuki feel like he was being dragged deeper into his flower shop owner fate. However, a sudden thought struck him.
"Tsubaki, we can get a temporary helper—one that doesn't require a salary."
"Free labor should never go to waste." Mizuki was quite pleased with his own brilliance.
Despite the midday heat, the streets of Konoha remained busy. While many villagers avoided going out, the influx of foreigners due to the Chunin Exams kept the streets lively. With the final stage of the exams only a month away, spectators and merchants alike continued flooding into the village, making Konoha more bustling than ever.
"Being surrounded by flowers makes the heat feel a little less oppressive."
To Mizuki's surprise, business was booming. Watching Tsubaki flit about the shop, busy yet smiling, he occasionally stepped in to help.
Seeing her working hard, wiping sweat from her forehead with a smile on her face, Mizuki realized—
"This is the life she wants. A simple, peaceful existence. Running a flower shop, raising a family, and making an honest living."
This was a world scarred by constant wars and instability. Even in the relatively peaceful Konoha, most people longed for stability. It was no wonder that so many sought peace—some even resorting to extreme measures to achieve it, whether it was real or just an illusion.
Ever since Mizuki had arrived in this world, beyond the physical discomfort of adjusting to his new body, what bothered him most was the sense of alienation. He had been thrown into an unfamiliar environment, burdened with the consequences of his predecessor's mistakes. That lingering frustration had never fully faded.
But now that things had finally calmed down, he had the chance to truly look at his surroundings.
Tsubaki, the person who had been by his side the longest, was like an anchor tying him to this world. She was the link that pulled him out of his detached, going through the motions mentality and grounded him in reality.
"She's not as fragile as she seems—she's strong and smart. Maybe she noticed my mindset and has been trying to help me in her own way."
Just like before, whenever Mizuki worked alongside Tsubaki, his mind felt at peace. Only in these moments could he set aside his worries and enjoy a rare moment of tranquility.
Sometimes, he wondered—how did people with foresight or prophecy abilities even live their daily lives?
If Mizuki hadn't known anything about the future, he could have been content with this life. He wasn't the strongest, but he had carved out a stable place for himself. Living the life of an ordinary ninja would have been enough.
"Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss."
As night fell, Mizuki finished up at the shop and returned home. No one came to question him about his encounter with Kabuto that morning, so he didn't bother worrying about it. He had his own priorities to deal with.
Early the next morning, a loud knocking at his door jolted Mizuki from his sleep.
Grumbling, he dragged himself out of bed. "Didn't I tell Tsubaki not to come this early?"
Muttering under his breath, he opened the door—only to find Kakashi Hatake standing there with Sakura Haruno.
"Yo, good morning," Kakashi greeted lazily. Sakura bowed politely in apology.
"You're here already?" Mizuki yawned. "I thought you'd take a couple more days off. Come in."
"No need," Kakashi replied. "I'm just here to drop her off. I have other things to handle."
He handed Mizuki a scroll. "Here's what you asked for. Once you're done with it, just have Sakura return it to me."
"That easy? Well, thanks," Mizuki accepted the scroll without hesitation.
"I'll leave her in your hands." With that, Kakashi vanished in a blur, disappearing as quickly as he arrived.
"In such a rush?" Mizuki muttered, glancing at the scroll. He turned to Sakura. "Alright, come in. Tsubaki will be here soon, so we can have breakfast together."
"No need to trouble yourself, Mizuki-sensei," Sakura said. "I brought some pastries as a gift. Please help yourself."
"Just set them on the table. Have a seat—I'll be with you in a moment."
