Chapter 95
"Well?"
"Speechless now, aren't you?"
Sasuke lifted his chin proudly, looking utterly pleased with himself.
At this moment, he felt no sorrow whatsoever because he was certain that since Kaito had brought him to meet the clan ancestor, there must be a way to revive all their deceased clansmen.
"6"
Kaito now realized no amount of talking would convince the dumb kid otherwise.
So all this time, you thought I brought you on a sightseeing trip to the Pure Land, huh?
Kaito could only marvel at his little brother's astonishing intellect, raising a hand in a gesture that was his highest form of praise.
Sasuke ignored Kaito's sarcasm and turned to call out to his father, sprinting toward the group of clansmen.
Whether it was because he hadn't seen them in so long or because of the grief over the clan's demise, tears streamed uncontrollably behind him as he ran.
"Bastards!" Fugaku, crouching by the well, suddenly roared, freezing Sasuke in his tracks—his joy instantly replaced by wariness.
Sasuke thought his father was scolding him and mentally reviewed every mistake he'd made since birth.
But the next second, Fugaku pointed at the well and cursed furiously.
"Didn't I tell you all not to eat anything unfamiliar?!"
"Why are people still getting food poisoning???"
Fugaku's voice was livid, and he even started physically disciplining the disobedient clansmen.
The scene was so intense that Sasuke hesitated to approach.
"Take a closer look. They're not physical entities."
"Huh?"At this moment, Kaito said something that left Sasuke utterly baffled. To prove his words were credible, he even picked up a brick-sized stone from the ground and, under Sasuke's shocked gaze, hurled it at the projection of their old man.
Whoosh—
The stone shot through the air with a whistling sound, heading straight for the back of their father's head. Sasuke, panicked, grabbed Kaito by the collar and roared, "Are you insane?!!"
Kaito shrugged and pointed at their unharmed father in the distance. "See? Nothing happened."
Where he pointed, only a dent from the stone remained, while the father who had just been targeted showed no signs of being hit.
Witnessing this, Sasuke turned to look at their still-busy father, then back at Kaito, his head swiveling several times as his brows furrowed in confusion.
After a moment of thought, Sasuke came to a startling conclusion.
"Father... they..."
"Is it because their strength in life wasn't enough to form solid bodies?"
Sasuke's young face was full of seriousness, his eyes brimming with gravity, to the point where he began pondering why the threshold for entering the Pure Land was so high.
Even someone as powerful as their father couldn't solidify his spirit into a physical form.
But then he recalled the legendary ancestor of the Sect with the Mangekyō he had just seen...
This situation suddenly seemed a bit more plausible.
Though their father was currently grumbling and cursing, having grown up watching his stern and perpetually annoyed expression, Sasuke could tell he seemed much more relaxed than before.
Kaito, seeing his little brother lost in thought, assumed he had finally cleared up the misunderstanding about the Pure Land. Just as he was about to continue speaking, the kid blurted out something shockingly unfilial.
"I kinda feel like..."
"Father is actually happier in the Pure Land after death."
Sasuke even pulled Kaito closer and whispered, as if afraid Fugaku nearby might overhear.
"Look, he never used to raise his voice this much before. And see how his brows aren't furrowed..."
"Kaito, why aren't you saying anything?"
"Wait, what's with that face?"
Sasuke listed every detail proving their father's genuine happiness, only to realize Kaito hadn't responded at all. Instead, Kaito had taken several steps back, wearing an expression of utter disgust.
"You're really something else, you know that?"
Kaito hadn't processed Sasuke's words at first.
What did he mean by "happier in the Pure Land after death"?
Was the kid trying to say their father had died happily? Or that he'd felt no pain when he passed?
No matter how you interpreted it, it sounded wrong. Kaito had thought he was plenty unfilial himself, but Sasuke's brand of filial piety was on another level.
"Of course!" Faced with Kaito's backhanded compliment, Sasuke puffed out his chest proudly, hands on his hips.
Not only had he seen their father directing the clan members, but he'd also spotted their mother cooking nearby. Judging by their expressions, they seemed far more content here in the Pure Land than they ever had in the living world.
But one thing puzzled Sasuke...
After searching through the crowd, he couldn't find any trace of his older brother Itachi.
"Kaito, where's Nii-san?"
"I saw his name on the casualty list at the village gates too. He should be here, right?"
Sasuke's face showed hopeful anticipation, though he immediately felt it was an unlucky thing to say.
Hearing this, Kaito froze momentarily before falling into complete silence.
Sasuke leaned in closer, eyes wide as he waited for Kaito's answer.About three minutes later, Kaito let out a long sigh and pointed at the projections.
"First, let me tell you again—this isn't the Pure Land. It's Amegakure."
Sasuke froze at those words, his expression twisting into a knot, his youthful face nearly crumpling with wrinkles.
"You're saying…"
"Our entire Uchiha clan went to war and then defected as a whole?"
"Stop joking around!"
Sasuke pointed at his father's figure. "Then explain what these projections are!"
As he spoke, he patted Kaito's shoulder, adopting the demeanor of an elder brother. "I know you don't want me to be sad."
"If the clan is dead, then they're dead. They're doing just fine in the Pure Land, aren't they?"
Compared to the idea of the entire clan defecting to Amegakure, Sasuke clearly found the notion of them dying in battle far more acceptable.
After all, their powerful ancestors would surely find a way to bring everyone back.
"That's not the Pure Land. It's the Secret Realm."
"Sasuke, listen. What I'm about to say might be hard for you to accept…"
Kaito gathered his thoughts and began recounting the events in detail.
As time passed, the smile on Sasuke's face gradually faded, eventually freezing completely.
Especially when he heard that his gentle older brother had attempted to kill their parents—and the entire clan—his eyes filled with disbelief. He couldn't accept Kaito's words at all.
The absurdity of it all was on par with his father dying under a telephone pole.
How could his brother possibly kill their parents with his own hands…?
"Kaito, if you keep joking like this, I'll really get angry…"
Kaito had anticipated his foolish younger brother's reaction. He met Sasuke's gaze without a word, his expression unreadable.
The two stared at each other for a full ten minutes before Sasuke began to panic.
He could tell Kaito was serious, but he still refused to believe it—or rather, he didn't want to believe it.
Sasuke covered his ears with his hands, shaking his head and shouting repeatedly, as if doing so could dispel the horrifying thought in his mind.
"You're lying! You have to be lying!!"
"I don't believe it!!"
"Uchiha Kaito! You jerk!!!"
