Chapter 12: suna
The sun was beginning to set over the desert of Suna, tinting the sky with shades of orange. After an entire day of travel, Naruto finally stood before the massive gates of the Hidden Sand Village. The journey had not been easy, causing him to lose time. He approached the guards stationed at the entrance.
"I come from Konoha under the Hokage's orders," he declared in a calm but firm tone. "I need to see Kankuro as soon as possible."
One of the guards, a broad-shouldered man with a suspicious gaze, eyed him from head to toe before crossing his arms.
"Who the hell are you?" he asked arrogantly.
Naruto raised an eyebrow under his mask. "Damn it..." he cursed, searching for something.
He didn't have his forehead protector with him, leaving him without a way to identify himself. He was now in a very tricky situation.
"I'm from Konoha, but I don't have my headband with me. Still, I need to see Kankuro or Temari as soon as possible," Naruto insisted.
The second guard burst into laughter.
"Oh, sure, and I'm the Daimyō of the Land of Wind!" he sneered.
The first guard placed a heavy hand on Naruto's shoulder, pressing slightly.
"Listen, kid. Leave while I'm still asking nicely."
Naruto felt a wave of irritation rise within him. These idiots were wasting his precious time. Without warning, he grabbed the guard's hand and twisted his arm sharply. A sinister crack echoed, followed by a howl of pain.
"I don't have time to play games with you," he said, his gaze darkening. "Your Kazekage's life depends on it, so step aside."
The other guard, alerted, attempted to intervene, but Naruto pivoted smoothly and struck him hard on the neck. The man collapsed instantly, unconscious.
The sound of the scuffle attracted five more guards who rushed over. Seeing their fallen comrades, they drew their weapons and assumed combat stances.
"You bastard, you'll regret this!" one of them shouted.
"And here comes the rest of the pack, baring their fangs," Naruto sighed. He really didn't have time for this nonsense. "Alright, come at me all at once."
But before the fight could start, a powerful wind rose, lifting the sand. A silhouette appeared atop the village wall—Temari, her massive fan unfolded.
"Stop immediately!"
Without waiting for a response, she lunged at Naruto with impressive speed, aiming a strike with her fan. But Naruto dodged effortlessly and, in the same motion, delivered a kick to her ribs. Temari grimaced and stumbled back several steps, catching her breath.
"What do you want?!" she demanded, her eyes filled with suspicion.
Naruto, irritated, rolled his eyes.
"How many times do I have to say it? I'm here under the Hokage's orders!"
Without further delay, he reached for his face and tore off his mask, revealing his identity.
Temari's eyes widened, her breath hitching for a moment.
"Naruto?!"
She immediately lowered her fan and gestured to the guards.
"You idiots! He's an ally!" she scolded.
The guards hesitated but, under Temari's orders, lowered their weapons and bowed slightly.
"We… we're sorry."
Naruto sighed again and shrugged.
"Whatever. Time is short. I need to see Kankuro immediately."
Temari nodded, regaining her composure.
"Follow me."
Without wasting another second, she led him through the streets of Suna, taking him straight to where her poisoned brother was fighting for his life.
The room where Kankuro lay was dimly lit, only a few flickering candles illuminating the space. The air was filled with the scent of medicines and bandages. Kankuro lay on a futon, sweat beading his forehead, his breathing ragged. His complexion was pale, marked by the effects of the poison Sasori had injected into him.
Naruto knelt beside him.
"Kankuro, can you speak? I need you to tell me everything that happened."
The puppeteer slowly opened his eyes and managed a faint smirk upon recognizing Naruto.
"You haven't changed… well, not much," he rasped before grimacing in pain.
Taking a deep breath, he began explaining.
"We pursued them as soon as we learned Gaara had been kidnapped. But those guys… they were too strong. I couldn't do anything against Sasori. He's a monster. He paralyzed me with his poison before I could even use my puppets effectively."
Naruto listened intently, his serious gaze fixed on Kankuro. With every word, he analyzed the situation, searching for any clue that could help him find Gaara quickly.
Temari, meanwhile, stood back, observing Naruto with a strange feeling. Something about him had changed—his attitude, his posture… He wasn't the hyperactive kid she had known. She placed a hand on her aching ribs and winced.
"Did he really do that to me with just one hit?!" she thought, stunned.
But it wasn't just his strength that intrigued her. Why was he alone? Wasn't he supposed to come with a team?
The pain in her ribs became unbearable, so she decided to head to the infirmary at the end of the hallway.
The conversation continued, with Kankuro providing all the information he had on the attack and the probable direction Deidara and Sasori had taken. Finally, exhausted, he collapsed back onto his pillow.
"That's all… Sorry, I can't do more…" he murmured before passing out again.
Naruto stood up and bowed slightly.
"Thank you. Rest now—I'll bring Gaara back."
Meanwhile, Temari had arrived at the infirmary. A nurse hurried over to her.
"Lady Temari, what can I do for you?"
"No need to fuss," Temari replied calmly. "I just need a check-up—I have some pain in my ribs."
After hearing this, the nurse examined her using medical ninjutsu. A faint green light enveloped her delicate hands as she placed them over the affected area.
After the diagnosis, the nurse hesitated before speaking.
"You need to be more careful. We're counting on you until the Kazekage returns. But you must take it easy—you've already got a fractured rib, and you just got back."
Temari gritted her teeth.
"A fractured rib… all from a single hit from Naruto?!"
She shook her head and quickly thanked the nurse before leaving. She needed to see him.
By the time she reached the exit, Naruto was already preparing to leave, his expression grave.
"Naruto, wait!"
He stopped and turned slightly toward her.
"What is it?" he asked, clearly in a hurry.
"I'm coming with you."
Naruto raised an eyebrow. Why so suddenly?
"That's not a good idea. I'd rather act alone," he replied. "Besides, you need to take Gaara's place until I bring him back."
Temari crossed her arms and glared at him.
"I know Suna and the desert better than you. If you go alone, you'll waste time—or worse, get caught in a trap. The Akatsuki is a serious threat."
Naruto remained silent for a moment, staring at her with an unreadable expression. He seemed to weigh his options.
Finally, he sighed.
"Fine. But I'm warning you—this could be more dangerous than expected."
Temari smirked confidently.
"I'm a ninja. You'll see—I'm the one who's going to help you catch up to them."
Naruto nodded before turning toward the horizon.
"Then let's not waste time."
And so, they set off together, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
