Chapter 72: CHAPTER 71 - The Detoxification Mission
"I'm back, Lord Orochimaru, Jonin Nara. I've discussed the supplies needed for the frontline camp with the logistics personnel in Konoha. The next batch of military supplies will be directly sent to the River Country camp once procurement is completed," Hyuga Mirai reported immediately upon his return. Although the mission was only a C-rank task, that was mainly because there was little danger involved. However, the process and outcome of the mission were still quite significant for the frontline camp.
"Thank you for your hard work, Mirai-kun. There may be even more important tasks ahead for you," Orochimaru said with a nod. Nara Shikaku then began explaining the latest developments from the frontline to Hyuga Mirai.
In the seven days since Mirai left, the Sand Ninja had launched a large-scale offensive, with the Fourth Kazekage personally leading nearly a thousand Sand Ninja in a retaliatory assault against Orochimaru. While they were repelled by a well-prepared Orochimaru and Namikaze Minato, Konoha's losses were still significant. The Sand Ninja's envoy, who had been negotiating with Konoha, had failed to secure their desired benefits and was mocked by Danzo, which enraged them. They then reported back to the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, in anger.
This attack came with a great deal of bitterness from the Sand Ninja, and their elite forces vastly outnumbered Konoha's. At Konoha's River Country camp, there were two powerful figures who could tip the scales of war. While the Fourth Kazekage and Chiyo held the line, Minato's Flying Thunder God technique, which was extremely effective against slower ninjas, still posed a deadly threat. However, after a few exchanges with Minato, Rasa had figured out how to counter it by manipulating the kunai with his sand jutsu, rendering Minato's spatial transfer ineffective. To fight Rasa, Minato would be forced to summon the toads from Mount Myoboku.
Orochimaru and Chiyo were locked in a tense battle on the battlefield. Unlike in the future, Orochimaru was currently reluctant to use forbidden jutsu and mostly relied on Earth and Snake-style techniques. While these jutsu were powerful and difficult to deal with, they lacked a decisive killing blow. Thanks to Chiyo's experience and her use of puppets, she was able to keep Orochimaru at bay, preventing him from interfering with the other Sand Ninja.
As for the summoning of Manda, Orochimaru typically refrained from calling upon the giant snake, as its ferocity could endanger even Konoha's own ninja.
At present, the most dangerous weapon the Sand Ninja possessed against Konoha's ninja was poison. With Chiyo stationed in the village of Sunagakure, many of Konoha's ninja had fallen victim to the poison of the Sand Ninja's puppeteers. Without specialized antidotes, medical ninjas had to rely on the Extraction Technique to remove most of the toxins from the body, followed by basic antidotes for healing. While this could fully heal the victims, the number of medical ninjas was insufficient, and there were far fewer ninjas skilled in this technique than in sage arts. It was clear that using this method to treat the wounded would result in the loss of many ninja.
"This is the situation, Mirai-kun. We urgently need someone who can decipher the Sand Ninja's poison. Aomori and the others recommended you, believing your abilities surpass theirs. So now..." Nara Shikaku paused, awaiting Mirai's response.
The last time Konoha managed to overcome the Sand Ninja's poison was due to Tsunade-sama tirelessly researching antidotes for the poison Chiyo had created. Without Tsunade, Konoha now faced a glaring vulnerability. While Konoha had many medical ninjas, they couldn't afford to spend twenty-four hours a day using the Extraction Technique, as it would exhaust them.
"I've indeed studied poison for some time, though I can't compare to Tsunade-sama. But I will do everything I can to crack the Sand Ninja's poison and develop an antidote to save my comrades," Hyuga Mirai said firmly, his voice resolute as though the suffering of Konoha's ninjas would be his responsibility if he failed.
"Excellent, Mirai-kun," Orochimaru said with a raspy voice, his smile thin and amused. He was praising Mirai's acting skills. If he hadn't seen Mirai's true self, even he might have believed this twelve-year-old boy was the perfect inheritor of the Will of Fire.
"In Kikyo City, there's a house where Tsunade left behind her research on the antidote. If you need anything else, gather it quickly. I'll have the village send it over as soon as possible."
"Thank you so much, Lord Orochimaru!" Hyuga Mirai thought happily to himself. What could be more thrilling than research and experiments? Developing an antidote would only require one or two shadow clones. The rest of the time, he'd be free to pursue his own interests. He had just received a new scientist template, and now he had a good reason to bring research equipment to the frontline. Mirai couldn't help but feel excited for the days ahead, eager to start writing down the equipment list for Konoha to deliver.
"By the way, Mirai-kun, your two teammates are also injured and are in the medical camp," Orochimaru added thoughtfully.
The medical camp was busy, with many people injured, mostly from Sand Ninja's poison. After taking the antidote, they were enduring the pain, waiting for treatment.
"Mirai-kun?!"
At that moment, Kurenai Yuhi turned and saw Hyuga Mirai. She called out joyfully.
Upon hearing her voice, Mirai waved back and walked toward Kurenai's position.
"Mirai-san! You're finally here!"
"Mirai-kun? The medical ninja boy? This is great! Another strong medical ninja! We won't have to suffer anymore!"
"Mirai-san!"
"Mirai-san!"
After Kurenai's call, many of the injured in the camp turned their attention to him. The sight of a doctor always made the wounded feel a bit more hopeful, and with Mirai being a highly skilled medical ninja, many were excited to greet him.
Mirai could only politely wave back while making his way toward Kurenai and Kiyo Hyuga.
When he got closer, he noticed both of them didn't seem to be in good condition either.
"Kurenai, Kiyo… How did you both get so badly hurt?"
"Hehe, Mirai-kun, Kiyo and I achieved quite an accomplishment this time," Kurenai said with a smile.
Mirai reached out and lightly tapped Kurenai on the forehead, sighing. "You're both injured, and you're still smiling? I told you before, on the battlefield, your life is the top priority."
Mirai then performed the Shadow Clone Jutsu, creating three clones. One clone would write down the list of research equipment to be transported to the frontline, the other two would help treat other injured personnel, and the main body would focus on detoxifying and healing Kurenai and Kiyo.
