Chapter 277: Rumour Mill

"Well, I'll see you later, Sasuke-kun," said Sakura as they stepped out of the Hokage Residence. "I'm a bit tired, so I think I'll head straight home and get some rest."

"Mmh," grunted Sasuke. "I'll see you tomorrow, then."

Sakura waved him a cheery goodbye before setting off towards home. But barely had they taken two steps that they realised they were going in the same direction.

"You're going that way too, huh?" said Sakura awkwardly.

In response, Sasuke jingled a set of keys.

Shortly after their meeting with the Hokage had ended, Shizune had caught up with him halfway down the stairs to inform him that he'd been evicted from his old apartment due to his prolonged absence.

But luckily for him, the old Uchiha District was in the process of being revitalised.

Tsunade had taken a small sum from his inheritance to renovate a house right next to Sakura's and had all his belongings moved in. His new flat wasn't the old clan head's mansion at the heart of the district, as his old home was bound to be full of unpleasant memories, but it would do well enough for a single-income household with no dependants.

"So, we're neighbours now?" Sakura exclaimed in surprise.

Sasuke offered a silent prayer of thanks to the three old codgers on the Konoha Council. He'd never thought much of them, considering all the times he'd heard his father complain about them when he was alive, but this time, they had done a good job!

"Seems like it," said Sasuke, shrugging nonchalantly— though inwardly, he was punching the air in victory.

Indeed, what most worried the higher-ups about Sasuke was his mental instability. The complete loss of the Uchiha clan's bloodline would be a serious blow to the village— so what better way of reviving the clan than by putting two, young and sexy Uchiha clansmen right next door to each other? Historically, the only reliable way to get a great warrior to lay down his arms and settle down was to get him hitched!

As they wended their way through the village to the Uchiha District, which had been moved to the outskirts of town following the Nine-Tails' attack, Sakura and Sasuke couldn't help but hear people gossiping about them behind their backs.

"It's that bastard girl again…"

"Look, she's got a man with her."

"Well, what can I say, except like mother, like daughter?"

"I caught the bitch staring at me in the baths once."

"Creepy."

"Disgusting."

"Lesbian."

Well, which is it? Sakura wanted to scream at them. Am I a man-eating nympho or a pervy lesbian? Make up your damn minds and just pick one, already!

One woman, out shopping with her young child, even went so far as to cover her little boy's eyes as Sakura passed. It wasn't as if she were indecent— everything was perfectly well covered, and only a tasteful amount of cleavage was shown.

…for Sakura's standards.

Over the past two and a half years, nasty rumours about Sakura and her parents had spread like wildfire among the civilian population, particularly among the fairer sex. Indeed, the men much preferred to leer at her rather than flap their gums, which only served to inflame the gossipmongers' envy and jealousy even more.

In Sakura's previous life, some netizens had theorised that Danzō had deliberately spread rumours that Naruto was the Nine-Tailed Fox's reincarnation in order to help Hiruzen better control him, by allowing the old man to position himself as a father figure to a young and impressionable Naruto.

Sakura wasn't sure if the netizens' theory was true, or if the villagers had worked out Naruto's secret themselves by looking at his whiskers. Neither did she know if Danzō was now doing the same thing to her since he believed she was an Uchiha brat, but one thing was clear: the villagers' fondness for spiteful gossip was all too real.

And it wasn't especially pleasant to be on the receiving end.

There were whispers that Sakura had slept her way up the chain of command to become the Hokage's disciple, or that she'd had cosmetic surgery for breast implants. Sakura didn't know what she hated more: people dismissing her talent and the years of hard work she'd put into becoming stronger, or the fact that they didn't believe her chest was 100% real!

"I'll put them in their place," said Sasuke in a low voice, but Sakura reached up, laid a hand on his shoulder, and shook her head.

Whoa, he was even taller than she was now.

"Don't give them any more to talk about," Sakura said wearily.

Her neighbours were part of the reason why she wanted to return to her life as a mission ninja. The farther she was away from them, the better.

The other part was that even though her patients at the hospital adored her, she hated their guts!

Little-known fact about doctors: some might start out full of dreams of curing the world or of becoming filthy rich, but after years of patients talking their ears off about their insignificant little health problems, most would be ready to throw in the towel!

No, the adventuring life was the life for her! She wasn't going to master the Yin-Yang Gender Reversal Jutsu by staying cooped up in a little cubicle and turn the entire male population into women for the ultimate harem!

[The Yin-Yang Gender Reversal Jutsu cannot target the technique's caster.]

Okay, no matter! The ultimate yuri-yuri harem, then!

"You probably have nothing to eat at home, right?" said Sakura, snapping out of her daydreams as she neared her house. "Why don't you come in and have dinner with us?"

-----

Author's Note: When I first started thinking of a (female) romantic partner for Sakura at the start of the story, I hadn't thought of the Yin-Yang Gender Reversal Jutsu yet. So, I ran through the list of potential candidates, and quickly found that most women either weren't into girls, or already had male canon pairings.

That left me with Tenten and Karin.

I initially ruled out Tenten because I wanted her to be a serious, future-regressor anti-hero who'd thematically clash with Sakura's ridiculous busty transmigrator energy.

So, Karin won by default.

That's what I went with, and that's what I told readers I'd do.

However, Karin's personality is basically just tsundere with some yandere sprinkled in, so I kind of wrote her to be a funny stalker, which really didn't make her sympathetic as a romantic lead. (It's not nearly as fun as it sounds to have a female stalker).

So, before it's too late to change things, vote for what you like best:

[Karin, as planned, and I'll make an effort to flesh out her personality (beyond being a stalker who gets in the way of Sakura's love life)]

Or…

[Female Sasuke]

[Female Naruto]

It's twice as gay, because it's two girls getting it on, but it's two guys piloting them!

[Other]

[All of the Above]
