Chapter 20: Something’s Rising… and It’s Not the Shield Hero
Time flies by like wind, and in a blink of an eye, it was about the end of the year.
Today, there is relative stability among the five major villages, and they have begun to recover steadily.
However, the ninja world did not calm down.
The war between the great villages is over, but all that is left for the small countries that became battlefields is ruins and devastation.
In order to recover and rebuild their homes, various small nations began to invade other nearby small countries and plunder resources.
And the wars between these small countries? All financed by the big countries.
Behind every small-scale war, it's just another chess move in the game of post-war interests.
This is the sorrow of small countries.
This world has never been peaceful.
—
During this time, a mercenary organization called Akatsuki suddenly appeared. They started taking commissions and getting active in various small-scale conflicts.
—
The Land of Fire – Konoha Village
After the war, Konoha had started to crawl out of its pit of sorrow. The streets slowly regained their former noise, kids laughed again, and the smell of food stalls returned to the air.
And on this day, right at the gate of Konoha Hospital, a beautiful young woman with long red hair walked out, a smile blooming across her face. She didn't even bother to hide her excitement... she just wanted to go home.
As everyone else went about their day, unaware, an ordinary-looking Konoha ninja stood quietly on the hospital roof, his eyes following her retreating back.
He asked with a calm expression and his voice flat.
"How about it?"
As the words fell, a white head emerged from his feet.
"Due date—October 10."
"Heh… it really hasn't changed," Obito muttered with a light smile.
There was no emotion, no shock... just quiet confirmation.
Then he turned around and left.
—
Konoha – Forest of Death
The same "ordinary" Konoha ninja appeared again, now deep in the Forest of Death.
His eyes suddenly turned blood-red.
Mangekyō Sharingan.
Space twisted unnaturally, and with the blink of an eye, several white Zetsu dropped out from Kamui's dimension.
"You guys are staying here from now on. Keep a watch on Konoha. Feed me everything."
"Understood~"
The white Zetsu sank into the ground like shadows, disappearing without a trace.
Obito didn't even spare a glance as they vanished.
—
Still in his transformed appearance, Obito strolled casually through the streets of Konoha, completely unbothered.
'So this is Konoha, huh? The legendary birthplace of this world's main character, Naruto. The start of a story liked by millions in my previous life.'
'What can I say? Ordinary. Rustic. Nowhere near modern…but there's something about it the modern world doesn't have. Something I can't quite put a finger on.'
He kept walking.
Then?
He saw the sign.
Ichiraku Ramen.
He walked in, sat down, ordered, and ate.
It was good.
Simple, hot, nostalgic.
'As a Naruto fan, how could I miss the legendary Ichiraku Ramen?'
As for the original owner of the face Obito was using to conceal his identity, the poor guy was currently fast asleep at home and he wouldn't remember a damn thing by morning. Good. Obito didn't need witnesses.
By evening, he'd made his way to the Konoha Cemetery, a fresh bouquet of white roses in hand.
The sunset draped the gravestones in a quiet orange hue. Standing before the headstone marked "Nohara Rin," Obito exhaled softly.
He knelt and tossed aside the withered bouquet that had been sitting there, replacing it with the new roses.
In his previous life, white roses were often used in memorials. They symbolized purity the sincerest of blessings for the departed.
A hope that the soul would find peace, far from the chaos of the world.
The dead rest in peace. The living carry on.
He lingered for a moment, silently staring at the name engraved on the stone, then turned to leave.
But just as he approached the cemetery gate, he spotted someone approaching... someone both unexpected and expected at once.
A Konoha ninja in a black uniform with unmistakable spiked silver hair walked toward him, a bouquet in hand.
He wore his mask, his eye uncovered by any headband, and his face carried only a somber expression.
Hatake Kakashi.
Obito glanced at the empty left eye socket black, hollow and continued walking without breaking stride.
The two passed each other like shadows, back to back.
No words. No eye contact. No acknowledgment. Just two strangers in the same graveyard.
For Kakashi, that was all Obito had become... a stranger.
As they crossed paths, his eyes remained still, without a single ripple or storm.
But that calm didn't last long.
Standing before Rin's grave, Kakashi's eye narrowed when he saw the white roses. His heart skipped. His lips parted slightly, then he turned back toward the gate.
But it was already empty. Whoever had left the flowers... was long gone.
Six Months Later — Land of Rain
Inside a towering spire in Rain Village, Obito lounged on a sofa. Across from him sat Pain or rather, Nagato's Rinnegan-piloted corpse.
And seated beside him, as if it were perfectly natural, was Konan.
Nagato didn't question the seating arrangement. Either he didn't care… or he trusted her. Either way, Obito wasn't about to explain.
After discussing Akatsuki's growth and the progress of their plans, Pain shifted his attention to White Zetsu, who stood off to the side.
"So. What's the status of the Tailed Beasts?"
Zetsu grinned. "Almost finished gathering intel~"
"One-Tail's in the Sand Village. New Jinchūriki... just a baby. Name's Gaara."
"Two-Tails? Cloud Village. Host is Yugito Nii. She's thirteen."
"Three-Tails is… uh... missing."
Of course it is, Obito smirked inwardly. The damn turtle hasn't been reincarnated yet.
Zetsu continued: "Four-Tails is in Iwagakure. Host's a jōnin named Rōshi."
"Five-Tails is there too. Ninja named Han."
"Six-Tails? Mist Village. Host is Utakata"
yes, we're using his name from the movie.
"Seven-Tails is in Takigakure. Old host, probably gonna croak soon. Replacement's expected in a few years."
"Eight-Tails? Cloud Village. Host is the Raikage's younger brother Killer Bee."
"And the Nine-Tails? Obviously, Konoha. Host is Uzumaki Kushina. Wife of the Fourth Hokage."
"With the exception of the Three-Tails, all current hosts have been located," Zetsu concluded.
A long silence followed.
'GIGACHAD Zetsu,' Obito thought, nodding inwardly with approval.
After a moment, Obito spoke.
"The rest are easy targets. But the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails… those two are a pain."
"Oh?" Pain glanced over. Even Konan tilted her head slightly, raising a brow.
Obito sighed, deadpan serious.
"You know... after my legendary clash with Hashirama... my body hasn't fully recovered. I try not to overdo it."
He said it with a straight face, lying with the casual grace of a seasoned troll.
"The Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails are leagues above the others. Strongest of the bunch. Not only that, but since the Fourth Raikage took over, he's kept Killer Bee locked down. No field missions. No chances."
"Same for Kushina. The Nine-Tails host doesn't leave the village."
He leaned back, resting one ankle on the other. "Capturing either one would mean attacking their home villages head-on. Not ideal."
Konan nodded slowly. "Then it would be wise to hold off until we're fully prepared."
Her voice was calm, but Obito could swear she was peeking sideways at him just a little.
'Since you agreed with me… does that mean you want to fuck again?' Obito's internal monologue screamed.
'Damn… I'm irresistible.'
Unable to resist, he subtly brushed his fingers across Konan's thigh.
Just a gentle tap.
But her reaction was instant...a barely noticeable tremble. Her expression didn't shift, her poker face immaculate… but he could feel the death glare burning under that calm exterior.
'Did this masked bastard just grope me in front of Nagato?!'
'What if Nagato found out about us?! At least look at the occasion, you horny stallion!'
Konan cursed internally, her expression as blank as ever while her soul screamed into a pillow.
