Chapter 29
My sensei, Tetsu Hyuuga, was a student of the snake sannin, Orochimaru. That explained his strength, and also why he seemed so mysterious, even with such a nice personality.
I decided not to bring it up with him anymore; it seemed like something he hadn't fully overcome, or at least something unresolved in his life.
'When the time is right, I'll look into it, but for now, it's best to continue with his help without any problems or intrigue.'
And that's how I spent the next few days. Tetsu continued my training relentlessly, and I was increasingly able to defend and counter his blows.
Clearing my head had been an extremely important decision for this progress, along with continuing my meditation.
Then, one morning was different. I arrived at the usual time, but this time, I didn't have time to prepare or do anything. Tetsu had arrived before me.
"Did you fall out of bed, sensei? You're early, haha..." I commented, trying to joke a little.
"Today, Riku, training will be different," Tetsu said, completely ignoring my previous comment.
I stared at him, curious to know what he would say.
"You're going to fight me, one-on-one. No blindfolds, no holding back — give it everything you've got." A smile appeared on his face.
'A real fight? That sounds interesting... but can he handle it? I mean, I beat Danzou, right?'
"Is there a catch, sensei?" I asked.
"None. I want to see what you're capable of. You want to be a jounin, don't you? Then fight like one. And stop underestimating me with that pitiful look on your face." He spoke with more confidence, replacing his smile with a challenging expression.
My excitement was written all over my face. If he wanted to fight, I would show him what I was capable of.
"I accept your challenge, sensei." I smiled.
[Challenge started.]
[Defeat Tetsu Hyuuga.]
[Rewards: ???]
As we prepared for battle, I began to observe him — his movements, his warm-up with his shoulders and fists, the sword he carried on his back, the way he always seemed relaxed, even in a situation like this. He was strong, and he was confident.

'So that's how this ability works, huh?'
Tetsu waited for me, looking like he wasn't going to make the first move, so I took the opportunity to attack him from a distance.
My hands moved in a flash, forming the hand seals almost instantaneously.
"Mokuton: Wooden Stakes!"
In the blink of an eye, several stakes rose from the ground on the battlefield, heading toward Tetsu. They pierced the ground with tremendous speed and power.
Tetsu began to dodge them all with relative ease — just as I planned: to distract him and slow him down.
While he danced between the stakes, I made more hand seals.
"Suiton: Water Arrows."
An arc of water appeared in front of me, and like an archer, I launched several arrows in his direction, coming at him from all sides.
I saw his carefree expression change for a moment, which was enough time for him to draw his sword, which shone with a blue glow from the chakra that infused it.
Tetsu adjusted his stance on the ground, maintaining a firm base, and then took a deep breath. His sword moved with grace and technique. Each time it clashed with a water arrow, a kind of chakra barrier formed around him, blocking the next attack.
"Ninpou: Kenjutsu Hyuuga. Absolute Defense."
"Come on, Riku, is that all you've got?" he said with his usual smile.
"I haven't even started..." I said.
As I began to prepare new hand seals, he charged toward me, and instead of my stakes getting in his way, he used them to gain momentum and close the distance faster.
[Battle Instinct activated.]
I noticed his sword strike coming toward me and dodged it with ease, as well as the following attacks in his sequence.
My progress was clear, even with only a few days of training. So I took the opportunity to use a new technique.
"Suiton: Spiral Current!"
A spiral of water enveloped me and spun around like a chainsaw. Tetsu took a few steps back, analyzing my next move and avoiding the water blade's edge.
I grabbed the water as if it were solid, and it became a long whip that latched onto the hand holding Tetsu's sword.
With his hand trapped inside the water, I made some roots attach themselves to his feet and start climbing up his entire body.
"I did it," I thought.
Then Tetsu's body turned into a wooden log.
"You can't forget this kind of technique," he said after using the substitution jutsu.
"Shoutei!"
[Battle Instinct activated.]
A blow from Tetsu hit me from behind, this time without his sword, which was still stuck in the water, but with his bare fists.
[You've been hit!]
[Critical hit received.]
[You are stunned.]
The Hyuugas' signature technique, the Gentle Fist, had the ability to stun and disrupt the opponent's chakra flow. In this case, me.
My body lurched forward, and I almost fell to the ground from the impact. Tetsu took the opportunity to retrieve his sword and resume his assault.
My battle instincts whistled with each new attack he added to his combo, but it was impossible to get rid of him. The cuts he made against me weren't deep — after all, we were just training — but each wound came with a blow to my chakra network, preventing instant recovery.
I focused as hard as I could on my regeneration, and managed to regain control of my body, just enough to create some distance between us.
'That was dangerous. Who is this guy?' I thought as I jumped back and recovered.
I took the chance to create one final distraction.
"Doton: Smoke Screen."
I channeled my chakra into the ground, and with the tremor, dust erupted everywhere.
To finish the setup, I performed two more jutsu.
"Mokuton: Wood Clone."
"Mokuton: Root Sensing Technique."
Three clones appeared around me, and all of them immediately used the sensory technique to locate the sensei.
"I found you," I said as I sensed his chakra through the smoke — he had noticed me too.
Going full force, Tetsu appeared in front of one of my clones and easily destroyed it.
He could see through the smoke thanks to his Byakugan, but he still couldn't tell which of us was the real one.
My two remaining clones charged at him, and I used that moment to prepare another jutsu.
"Mokuton: Great Forest Technique!"
As I leapt from his back, several thick wooden trunks extended from my arm and launched toward Tetsu's neck. He couldn't dodge or block in time.
A loud crash echoed as the trunks struck him, and he fell — wounded for the first time.
"That's enough," he said, serious and slightly angry.
"Ninpou: Hyuuga Kenjutsu. Natural Disorder."
Tetsu calmly spun his sword in the air. Then — silence.
Time froze for a few seconds, and although my body felt relaxed, my mind screamed in alarm.
On instinct alone, and with a stroke of luck, I shielded my body with stone skin just before the wind struck. I was launched several meters back.
The dust cloud I had created was now only half its original size — cut clean at Tetsu's waist. Just like my two clones and all the wooden structures I had summoned.
Above his waist? Everything was gone.
My clones dropped to the ground — only their legs remained.
He pointed his sword at me. Without hesitation, I raised my hands in surrender.
'What the hell is this guy?!?!'
