Chapter 21: From Forests to Skyscrapers
Shisui - POV
I could feel it instantly.
My radar sense kicked in the moment I landed. This place was not the same forest I was in a minute ago.
No trees.
Instead… tall buildings. Neon lights. Honking cars. Bikes. Shops. Streets packed with people and noise.
A city.
A modern one.
Information within a two-kilometre radius flooded my mind like a river bursting through a dam.
It was loud.
Not just in sound but in presence.
A modern world, huh? AC, smartphones, fast food, traffic signals, vending machines…
...Hent—
No. Nope. What the hell am I thinking?
Focus, Shisui. You're here to train. Not to fall into the degeneracy trap.
Still… damn.
I really wanna see it all with my own eyes. But I can't.
Not yet.
The bandages stay on.
Tsunade had offered surgery. Said she could help fix the damage. Restore some sight, at least. But I refused.
This blindness? It's a reminder.
A weight. A punishment I gave myself for the mistake I made.
Doesn't mean I'll stay like this forever. I'll get my eyes back.
Someday.
When I'm ready to take back what's mine.
But for now…
I push aside the crawling thoughts. Those ugly memories of Hiruzen and Danzo that threaten to infect everything I think about. I force myself to focus on the now.
I scan again.
Looks like I landed in a back alley. Quiet. Shadowed. No pedestrians nearby. No one watching from their windows.
Good.
With a flicker of chakra, I blurred out of sight using the Body Flicker Technique, layering it with a simple transformation.
Jackie Chan.
Because why not?
Chakra's still working just fine. That's a relief.
I've got a hundred things I want to test here, but first I need to figure out where I am and when.
And lucky me, I already see the perfect info sources heading my way.
A group of punks. Three of them. Swaggering down the alley like they own the place.
"老头,把你的口袋掏空"
(Lǎotóu, bǎ nǐ de kǒudài tāokōng)
The one with spiky black hair said, pointing at me with all the attitude of a mid-tier goon.
Wait a sec… Mandarin?
Crap.
I forgot. I'm in China.
Another one burst out laughing, probably making some dumb joke I couldn't understand. Their faces were all cocky, grins wide like they were about to win something.
Too bad for them.
I didn't even answer. Just made a single hand seal.
Poof.
Two of me now.
In the blink of an eye, both clones reappeared behind them. Kunai pressed lightly against their throats. No blood. Yet.
"English or Chinese?" I asked, voice calm like I was just ordering coffee.
Their grins vanished on the spot.
"E… English," one of them stuttered, suddenly realising they picked the wrong target.
——
A few minutes later.
I'm strolling through the streets now, cane tapping against the pavement. Playing the role of a blind man pretty well, if I say so myself. Got a new look too. Simu Liu, the guy who played Shang-Chi. Figured he fits in and doesn't scream suspicious foreigner.
Honestly, I doubt those punks from earlier would even know who to report me to, but still, no reason to take chances. Lay low, blend in.
Sure, the old me would've just killed them and moved on. Clean and quiet. But ever since I got my memories back, I've been trying not to spill blood unless I really have to. Especially when it comes to people who are just dumb, not evil.
Doesn't mean I won't kill.
Just means I pick my fights better now.
Anyway, good news. I've figured out where I landed.
Bo City. The place where the first major arc in Mo Fan's story goes down.
From the looks of things, there's no major panic, no destruction, no posters with Mo Fan's face on them. So either I'm at the very start of the plot, or somewhere right before things get crazy.
That means my next move is figuring out the exact timeline.
Shouldn't be too hard.
I'll start by looking for the Mu family. They're easier to track down than Mo Fan himself. Once I figure out what's going on with Mu Bai, I'll have a pretty solid idea of where I am in the story.
Also, if I'm remembering right, Mo Fan got admitted to the best high school in the city. That gives me another lead.
For now, I'll just let my shadow clones roam the city and gather info.
Shouldn't take long.
____
"Your Wolfy Sandwich," the girl at the counter said, handing me the package. I nodded, paid for it, and left.
As for where the money came from? Well, that was easy. Just looted the guys who were out looting others.
Simple karma.
I walked over to a nearby park, found an empty bench, and sat down to eat.
Hmm… the taste's actually pretty good. No wonder the line was so long.
Monster meat really is different from the regular chicken I had yesterday. It's more nutritious. I can literally feel my stomach getting full faster.
No wonder mages who eat this stuff regularly have stronger bodies. Better strength, higher agility. Their physical stats probably skyrocket just from their diet. Makes sense now.
Of course, it's expensive. Way more than normal food.
There are still regular animals in this world—chickens, cows, goats—but most of them are either in zoos, used for experiments, or bred specifically for meat and milk.
Once I was full, I leaned back and started thinking through my plans.
Over the past few days, I've already found what I was looking for. Mu Bai just finished his first year at school, and someone challenged the Mu family last month. Most likely Mo Fan. That lines up with what I remember.
The next semester starts in a month, and that's when the outdoor training arc begins. As for the destruction of Bo City, that's about two years away.
My main goal is to steal the Awakening Stone from the school.
Those things are hard to find outside. The best chance is when the new academic year starts and fresh students pour in. That's when security gets spread thin, and it'll be easier to slip in and grab one.
I also need to register at the Hunter Union.
It's a global organisation with branches all over the world. Basically, it works just like the Adventurer Guilds you see in anime. Requests, ranks, rewards, all that.
And the missions aren't limited to just monster hunting. Some are about gathering intel, resource collection, security escorts, even odd jobs. Because of this variety, they allow people to register under fake names or even without official ID.
That said, it's not as easy as it sounds.
Even if you use a fake identity, the agency can track your movement through timestamps, contact numbers, travel logs, and mission records. If they really want to, they can figure out who you are.
So using different fake identities across cities sounds clever, but it comes with its own problems.
The biggest one is rank progression.
Your hunter rank determines what kind of missions you're allowed to take, and doing jobs earns you contribution points. Those points work like sect contribution systems in donghua. They can be exchanged for secret intel, rare materials, or access to hidden perks.
Higher rank also means more reputation, more influence, and more opportunities.
Power, basically.
So which element should I go with?
I already have Fire, Lightning, and Wind. Wind's the one I'm least proficient with, so that's out.
That leaves Fire or Lightning.
Let's go with Fire.
It's more common and less attention-grabbing than Lightning. Blending in is better right now.
As for not showing my elemental pattern, there's no problem with it. I'll just treat it like a natural talent. This world has dozens of rare elemental talents anyway, so no one will question it much.
And it's not like I'm planning to join a team or anything. I work better solo.
So I'm not too worried.
Or maybe I should wait.
There's no need to rush. After all, my element will unlock naturally within a month anyway. No point taking unnecessary risks just to awaken it early.
Most likely, it'll be Fire or Dark. Both suit me.
Either way, I'll make it work.
Still, I need to sort out a legal identity soon. It'll be useful for travel, paperwork, housing. Basic stuff. Just good camouflage.
Once my element awakens, I'll start looking for a suitable target. Someone alone. No family. No close ties. Ideally, someone with a bit of dirt on them. It'll make the cover-up cleaner. But even if not, it won't be a problem.
I've taken lives before. Innocent or not, it doesn't matter when the mission calls for it.
Maybe I'll find more than one target. Having a few backups won't hurt.
And with the frequency of monster attacks, it won't be hard to find someone who fits the profile.
Besides, when the big attack hits Bo City in two years, everything's going to fall apart. Chaos, destruction, mass casualties. Thousands dead. Even more scattered across the country.
It will be the perfect storm.
A hundred fresh identities, just waiting to be picked up.
Perfect.
