Chapter 435: Chapter 435: Tsunade Becomes the Fourth Hokage

To put it bluntly, if you dragged him into the Hokage's office and chained him to the chair, Orochimaru still wouldn't enjoy being Hokage.

"What about Sakumo-senpai?" Tsunade asked curiously.

She wasn't surprised that Orochimaru was being considered over Jiraiya. However, she was puzzled about Nawaki and Minato being potential candidates—wasn't that a bit premature?

"Sakumo-senpai isn't suitable. His personality is too samurai-like. If he becomes Hokage, he'll lead the village in the wrong direction. It's better to choose Orochimaru over him," Shinki said, decisively crossing Hatake Sakumo off the list.

It wasn't that Shinki disliked Hatake Sakumo, but Sakumo's rigid character posed significant risks. With flaws so glaring before taking office, who knew what damage he could cause as Hokage? A ninja driven by a samurai spirit ruling the village? That was a scenario Shinki didn't dare to imagine.

"Generally speaking, you're the most suitable," Shinki said, looking at Tsunade. "The village is chaotic right now, and you're the best choice. Orochimaru is a second option, but if we're talking ideal candidates, Minato would be perfect."

"????"

How confident are you in Minato?

How old is Minato? Do you seriously think he's ready to be Hokage?

Tsunade stared at Shinki in disbelief.

Shinki took a sip of juice before explaining his reasoning.

"Your strength is your identity and background, but your personality is a disadvantage. Orochimaru's strengths are his abilities, identity, and contributions to the village, but his darkness and ambition are major flaws.

"As for Minato, he's a natural prodigy who constantly exceeds expectations. Nawaki, on the other hand, has potential, but his growth is capped."

Tsunade groaned, rubbing her forehead. Her frustration at the situation was mounting.

Was I impulsive in coming back?

I don't want to be Hokage.

Sitting in the Hokage's office every day, buried in endless paperwork—that thought alone gave Tsunade a headache.

"What about you? If you became Hokage, wouldn't that make it easier to guide Minato?"

"Me?"

Shinki laughed at the suggestion.

"Come on. I'm even lazier than you. Becoming Hokage and trying to mentor Minato? That'd kill me."

Shinki added with a shrug, "You should handle the Hokage's responsibilities yourself. Since you're back, head to the Hokage's office and take over. Orochimaru filling in for too long will stir dissatisfaction among the villagers."

Tsunade knew he was right. If she sat in the Hokage's office, even unofficially, people would accept it. But Orochimaru wasn't trusted enough to pacify everyone.

No rest at all?

I haven't even officially taken the position, and this is how it's going to be?

Orochimaru isn't a good choice, and neither is Jiraiya.

As for Minato and Nawaki, they're too inexperienced.

It has to be me.

But I don't want to be Hokage!

Tsunade could already picture herself dying of exhaustion in the office. But there was no other choice. She couldn't justify passing the role to someone else without risking backlash from the villagers or the daimyo.

The daimyo had clearly expressed his desire for her to become Hokage. Choosing someone else would seem like a mockery of his authority.

So, with no alternative, Tsunade reluctantly proceeded with the appointment process.

To smooth things over, a public notice was issued, detailing the missteps of the Third Hokage while pinning most of the blame on Shimura Danzo. The notice explained that although the Third Hokage had made mistakes, Danzo had been the true villain, and his execution had been a necessary action.

Meanwhile, the Third Hokage had chosen to atone for his sins by heading to the frontlines to fight for the village. Several ninja clans that had benefited from Danzo's corruption were also sent to the battlefield.

This narrative satisfied the villagers.

The announcement of Tsunade as the Fourth Hokage further distracted them. Her swift appointment skipped many formalities due to the wartime urgency, but the villagers understood. After all, the village was still at war, and there was no time for elaborate ceremonies.

Little did they know, Tsunade had orchestrated this shortcut intentionally.

"What's the next step?"

Sitting in the Hokage's office, Tsunade glared at Shinki, who was lounging lazily on a sofa.

"Next step?" Shinki replied without lifting his head.

"Announce the good news. Tell the villagers about the funds and supplies we've received from the Cloud Village. Don't reveal the exact numbers, but let them know we aren't supporting the war effort for free. Also, publicize the support we're getting from the daimyo's mansion."

He added, "Oh, and announce plans to increase training for civilian ninjas. Whether or not it happens, shouting these slogans will win hearts. Even though no one can challenge your position, it's essential for maintaining stability."

Tsunade's mouth twitched.

Didn't the village already focus on training civilian ninjas?

Isn't this just reheating old news?

But she understood the purpose. Political correctness mattered. Announcing these initiatives, even if redundant, reminded the villagers that their needs were being prioritized.

"What about the war?" Tsunade asked, her tone growing serious. "The reports from the frontlines aren't encouraging. Iwa Ninja Village's strength has exceeded expectations."

This war was a high-stakes gamble for Iwa. Their forces were spread thin, with Onoki leading the main army against the Land of Lightning while delegating the defense of the Land of Grass to his son, Kitsuchi.

Kitsuchi, despite his innocent demeanor in front of Onoki, was proving to be a formidable commander.

"That's fine," Shinki said indifferently. "The village's mission is to hold back Iwa. As long as we accomplish that, we've fulfilled our obligation to Cloud Village. The main battlefield is in the Land of Lightning, so there's no need to overextend ourselves."

He continued, "As long as we avoid large-scale losses, this war will have minimal impact on Konoha, especially given the level of support we're receiving from Cloud Village."

Tsunade nodded, though the situation still weighed on her.

"What you need to focus on is stability and making money," Shinki added. "The war will pass. Our job is to ensure the village remains prosperous and prepared for the future."
