Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Taijutsu Prodigy
Kenta sat cross-legged in the training courtyard, a leaf stubbornly stuck to his forehead. Or, at least, it was supposed to be. With a huff, the six-year-old wiped his brow as the leaf fluttered to the ground for the fiftieth time that afternoon.
"Why is this so hard?" Kenta grumbled, picking up the leaf again.
His sensei, Master Gorou, crouched nearby, watching with an amused expression. "Because you have more chakra than a kid your age should have. Controlling that much chakra is like trying to carry water in your hands without spilling it. For someone with your reserves, even the basics can be tricky."
Even though he was not a shinobi, Chakra control excercises were as important to a samurai if not more due to their limited chakra capacity as well as their chakra light sabre.
Kenta groaned. He had been trying the leaf concentration exercise for days, and while he had made some progress, it was painfully slow. 'In my last life, I had a perfectly good body for martial arts. Why couldn't I have inherited chakra control along with my stupid large reserves?'
While Kenta struggled with the leaf exercise, Master Gorou introduced him to some other basic chakra control methods.
The first of the many was the Finger Balance Exercise.
Gorou handed Kenta a small pebble and instructed him to balance it on his index finger using only chakra. The trick, Gorou explained, was to create a steady flow of chakra, neither too much nor too little, to keep the pebble stable.
"It's like trying to hold a balloon underwater," Gorou said. "Too much force and it'll pop out. Too little, and it'll sink."
Kenta tried, and the pebble immediately shot into the air, smacking Gorou on the forehead.
"Oops."
Gorou rubbed his forehead and sighed. "Let's try that again."
The Candle Exercise was next. Gorou placed a lit candle in front of Kenta. The goal was to create a thin thread of chakra and use it to flicker the flame without extinguishing it.
"This one's about precision," Gorou explained.
Kenta focused, narrowing his eyes. A thin wisp of chakra shot from his finger—and snuffed out the flame completely.
"Well, at least you didn't set anything on fire," Gorou said dryly.
The Bubble Field Exercise was another of the excercises that Gorou made Kenta do to improve his chakra control.
This exercise required Kenta to spread his chakra evenly around him in a small bubble, maintaining the field for as long as possible.
"This one will help with your sensory abilities too," Gorou said.
Kenta managed to form the field but struggled to keep it stable. Every time his concentration wavered, the bubble would collapse.
"It's like trying to juggle while standing on a tightrope," Kenta muttered. "Why is chakra control so unnecessarily hard?"
Despite his grumbling, Kenta persisted. Progress was slow, but he could feel himself improving bit by bit.
'Who would have thought that there were so many chakra control excercises? But well anime just showed a small part so it makes sense that there would be a lot more techniques, training methods and jutsus than actually shown.' Kenta thought
If Kenta thought his chakra control training was frustrating, his kenjutsu lessons were downright painful. Gorou handed him a wooden practice sword and demonstrated a series of basic stances and swings which was a level above what he did in previous training sessions.
Kenta mimicked the movements but couldn't hide his disdain. "I hate swords. They're so impractical."
"Impractical?" Gorou repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Swords are a cornerstone of both samurai and shinobi combat. A skilled swordsman can turn the tide of battle."
"Yeah, well, I'm clearly not destined to be one of those swordsmen," Kenta grumbled, nearly dropping the wooden blade as he attempted a diagonal slash.
'I never had the talent for swords even in my previous life. Heck, I don't like any bladed weapon. I am more of a fist guy. Not to mention, blade through my gut is what killed me in my previous life.' Kenta thought with a sigh about his poor Kenjutsu talent.
Gorou sighed too "Your older brother Ikkyû is a prodigy in kenjutsu. You could stand to learn a thing or two from him."
Kenta rolled his eyes.
Despite his complaints, Kenta continued to practice, though his lack of enthusiasm was evident. His swings were clumsy, his footwork was sloppy, and he frequently dropped the sword altogether.
At one point, he accidentally flung the wooden blade into a nearby tree, where it lodged itself firmly in the trunk.
Gorou stared at the sword, then at Kenta. "You're supposed to hold onto the weapon, not throw it."
"I'm just… testing unconventional tactics," Kenta said with a sheepish grin.
Gorou pinched the bridge of his nose. "We'll revisit kenjutsu later. Much later."
If kenjutsu was a disaster, Kenta's taijutsu training was the exact opposite. The moment Gorou sparred with him, it became clear that Kenta was no ordinary six-year-old.
Gorou lunged with a basic punch, expecting Kenta to dodge clumsily. Instead, Kenta sidestepped with precision, grabbed Gorou's wrist, and flipped him onto his back in one smooth motion. He did it despite the size and strength difference.
'Martial arts is not about strength but technique.' Kenta thought
"What the—?" Gorou sat up, rubbing his head.
Kenta grinned. "I might suck at swords, but hand-to-hand combat? That's my jam."
Gorou got back to his feet, a bit more cautious now. He launched a series of strikes, each faster than the last. Kenta dodged, blocked, and countered with such fluidity that Gorou found himself on the defensive.
By the end of the spar, Gorou was panting, while Kenta barely broke a sweat.
"How…? How do you even know this level of taijutsu? I have never seen such moments before. You are using some parts of one taijutsu style while also using some parts of other taijutsu style." Gorou gasped.
"It just came naturally to me. " Kenta said vaguely.
'So the taijutsu here is also made up of my world's martial arts. It makes sense. Hands and legs are the things that matter in Taijutsu mainly which is present in both worlds.' Kenta thought
As Gorou kept looking at Kenta for a better answer, Kenta shrugged. "Guess I'm just naturally talented."
Gorou muttered something under his breath about prodigies being a pain, but inwardly, he was impressed.
Kenta's taijutsu skills were undeniable, but he knew that wasn't enough. To fully utilize his Boogie Woogie technique, he needed exceptional physical strength. And for that, he needed to build a body that could handle the strain.
Kenta had always admired Todo Aoi's muscular frame. He didn't want the slim, wiry build of most shinobi; he wanted raw power.
As he worked on his strength training, Gorou raised an eyebrow. "You know, most shinobi prioritize speed and agility over bulk. A larger build can make you slower and less flexible."
Kenta smirked. "Not me. I've got a plan."
'Since I suck with weapons and need both hands free for my technique, I can't rely on traditional shinobi tools. That means I need exceptional strength and taijutsu to make up for it. As for speed, I'll train until I reach elite jonin levels at my peak. That's enough for me. After all, there is nothing faster than a space time jutsu. And flexibility? I know martial arts techniques that'll keep me nimble even with a muscular build."
Gorou frowned. "It's still risky. A larger build could make you an easier target for kunai and sneak attacks."
'Not if I can clap and teleport before they hit me,' Kenta just gave him a silent grin.
