A few minutes later, in Kusagakure;

Raido had a gloomy look on his face as he watched his shinobi use Water Release to fight the raging fires. He had previously sent a team of his Shinbo to check on the Uzumakis, as they were who Iwa was looking for, but he felt the explosion rock the village soon after.

A few minutes later, one of the Shinbo arrived next to Raido before saying: "Kusakage-sama, there are fatalities and injuries around the source of the explosion, which is that Uzumaki woman's hut. What stood out among the casualties were the bodies that we found close to the blown-up hut. While they were burnt, they also had snapped necks and broken skulls. We also didn't find any traces of the team you sent or the Uzumaki woman and her daughter."

Hearing this, Raido kept silent. He knew that the team he sent may have been blown up to nothing when they arrived at the hut. Whoever took the Uzumakis and set a trap in the empty hut.

"Tell the Shinobi to keep their eyes open to Iwa's movements, we need that woman back" Raido said

"What about the two from Konoha? Shouldn't we send anyone after them to check?" the Shinobi asked

"It is highly unlikely that Konoha had any hand in this. Their Hokage's message indicates that they know nothing of what is happening here. Also, those two Anbu operatives should be deep in the land of fire by now." Raido said, to which the Shinobi nodded before leaving.

About a day later, in an inn at the edge of Tanzaku Gai;

After traveling without rest for about a day, Team Shi, along with the Uzumaki mother and daughter, reached deep into the land of fire. As soon as they reached Tanzaku Gai, they went to an inn to take some rest. With a subtle genjutsu on the Inn owner that made them appear to be tourists visiting Tanzaku Gai, Ryuu was able to secure three rooms, without arousing suspicion.

"Rest for now, we will move out to Konoha early in the morning," Ryuu said to Phoenix after they settled the two Uzumakis in a room.

"Alright, I will see you tomorrow. But are you going to sleep?" Phoenix asked as she saw Ryuu looking at the door of the mother and daughter.

"I will, but not before I talk with the mother. I owe that much." Ryuu said, to which Phoenix nodded before she left for her own room.

Ryuu turned towards the door of the room the two Uzumaki were in before knocking gently.

"Come in, it is open." Akari's voice came from behind the door.

Ryuu opened the door before entering the room and closed it behind him. He then looked at the mother and daughter, who looked back at him.

Akari, with Karin in her lap, looked at the man who stood in front of her. She still knows nothing about him other than that he is called Ryuu and he might be one of her clansmen. The journey from Kusa to here was a quiet one with Karin sleeping most of the way on Phoenix's back. From time to time, the two masked operatives would give her and her daughter something to eat while they kept moving. Now they have stopped to rest in an inn in the land of fire. To Akari, this has been the comfiest she has been in a long time. A clean room with a comfy futon for her and her daughter to rest was already better than her situation before.

Ryuu sat down in front of the two before reaching for his mask and taking it off, revealing his face and returning his hair to its original vibrant red color. This surprised the mother and daughter a bit, while also calming Akari's nerves to a great degree.

"Kaa-chan, he has the same hair color as us," Karin said with a surprised and excited tone of voice.

"He does, doesn't he, sweetheart?" Akari said with a soft voice, looking at her daughter before she returned to look at Ryuu.

"Sorry for the late introduction. My name is Naruto Uzumaki. I have another surname as I am not a full blooded Uzumaki, but that will come later. And please call me Ryuu when I have my mask on." Naruto said

"I am Akari Uzumaki, and this is my daughter Karin. Say hi, Karin." Akari said

"Hello," Karin said with a wide smile and a little wave that made Naruto smile a little.

"Why were you in Kusa? From the looks of it, they don't treat you well at all." Naruto asked

"I had no other choice. After the destruction of Uzushiogakure and my husband's death later on, I had no choice but to live there and offer my …. Services." Akari said in a low, tired voice.

"Why didn't you come to Konoha? It was much nearer to Uzushiogakure, and they were allies." Naruto asked

"I asked my husband that, but he refused, saying that Konoha hadn't helped us when we were invaded, so why would they help us?" Akari said, to which Naruto stayed quiet for a moment.

He himself had some doubts about that situation. The official statement is that Konoha was surprised by the attack on Uzushiogakure and didn't have much time to respond. But here is what confuses Naruto: Did such a huge mobilization of Shinobi and troops for the other four great nations go completely undetected by Konoha until they reached the land of Whirlpools? This is something that Naruto couldn't believe.

"Take some rest, and tomorrow, early after breakfast, we will leave for Konoha. You both will be safe there. We will also investigate your health," Naruto said as he looked at the visible bite marks on Akari's body. The healing bite. A part of the Uzumaki bloodline that Kusa abused.

"You are from Konoha?" Akari asked with a surprised expression, to which Naruto nodded

"Do you know how Kushina is?" Akari asked, making Naruto surprised

"You know Kushina-nee-san?" Naruto asked surprised

"Yeah, we grew up together before she was taken to Konoha. How is she doing?" Akari said with a nostalgic smile.

"I am sorry to be the one to tell you this, but Kushina-nee-san died three years ago in the Kyuubi attack," Naruto said with a heavy tone, making the atmosphere turn gloomy in the room.

"Were you close to her?" Akari asked with a sad tone

"Very," Naruto replied with the same tone as he stood up.

"Take a good rest, we will be leaving tomorrow." Naruto said as he turned for the door.

"Before you leave, can you tell me who your parents are? The only one I know that was in Konoha is Kushina, and she isn't your mother, as you call her sister. Are they alive?" She asked with hope in her tone.

"My mother is alive, and I will have you meet her when we return to Konoha. Have a good night." Naruto said as he put his mask back on and left the room.

Akari looked at the door for a second before looking at her now sleeping daughter. She let a small smile appear on her face as she lay down with her daughter in her arms. Even though not all news is good, it looks like she made the right choice to trust Naruto, their life will take a brighter turn now.

To be continued.
