Chapter 139: Chapter 141
While the village meeting was underway, near the Root base, a Root ninja wearing a mask walked along a deserted road toward the underground facility.
"Mmpph—"
Suddenly, a figure emerged from the ground behind him, clamping a hand over his mouth and dragging him into an abandoned house nearby.
A moment later, the "Root ninja" emerged from the house, seemingly unharmed, and resumed walking toward the Root base.
Inside the abandoned house, however, lay a faceless corpse. The flesh of the corpse's face had been peeled away, leaving behind a grotesque sight.
When the disguised "Root ninja" arrived at the Root base entrance, he was stopped by the guards. Among them were both Root operatives and Anbu sent by the Third Hokage to oversee the facility.
The Root ninja on guard scrutinized the mask of the "Root ninja," paying close attention to its subtle markings. Each Root mask bore unique identifiers to prevent impostors.
After verifying the mask's authenticity, the guard asked sharply, "Password!"
"What supports the great tree of Konoha is the will of our roots that are deeply rooted in the earth," the "Root ninja" replied.
"All clear," the guard confirmed to the Anbu, signaling that the newcomer had passed the security checks.
The Root and Anbu guards stepped aside, allowing the disguised "Root ninja" to enter the underground facility.
Navigating the Root base with ease, the imposter moved deeper into the labyrinthine tunnels, heading for the lower levels—areas reserved for Danzo Shimura's personal quarters and secret collections.
These lower levels were heavily secured with barriers, making entry via Earth Release or similar techniques impossible.
Once there, the infiltrator began inspecting one room after another, clearly searching for something.
In one room, his eyes lit up as he quickly formed hand seals. Strange symbols glowed on his palm before he pressed it against a small stone embedded in the wall.
"Click—"
The stone shifted inward, revealing a hidden groove. Within it lay a scroll with ink-black ends, sealed away using advanced techniques.
"Just as I expected," the disguised ninja murmured, retrieving the scroll with a sly grin.
Danzo Shimura had vanished, and most of his secrets had been seized by the Third Hokage's Anbu. However, this infiltrator knew Danzo well enough to suspect that not all of his treasures had been confiscated.
His suspicion had paid off.
After pocketing the scroll, he continued searching other rooms for similar hidden compartments.
"Another one!"
In a hidden chamber, he found another sealed mechanism. With practiced ease, he released the seal, causing black symbols to vanish from the surface.
But this time, his discovery was less fortunate.
Instead of valuable secrets, he uncovered several detonating tags.
The tags ignited immediately.
Boom!
He reacted quickly, leaping away from the explosion, but his expression darkened. The noise would undoubtedly alert the Root and Anbu operatives in the base.
"Shimura Danzo…" he muttered bitterly.
Even in death, Danzo had managed to set a trap to thwart potential intruders.
"Intruder detected!"
"Someone's infiltrated the base!"
Voices echoed through the tunnels as Root and Anbu operatives rushed toward the source of the explosion.
"So, it's going to be loud," the infiltrator muttered.
He removed his mask, revealing a pale face framed by dark eye shadow. A long tongue flicked out, serpent-like, as he smiled wickedly.
"Who are you?"
The gathered operatives demanded answers, surrounding the infiltrator as reinforcements closed in.
"Me?"
The infiltrator tore away the human-skin mask, revealing none other than Orochimaru. His pale complexion, snake-like eyes, and unsettling aura struck fear into his enemies.
"It's Orochimaru!"
The name sent waves of panic through the gathered operatives. Orochimaru, one of the legendary Sannin and an S-rank missing-nin, was a terrifying foe.
"I'll have to make this quick before the old man arrives," Orochimaru murmured.
He bit his finger, drawing blood, and pressed his palm to the ground.
"Summoning Jutsu—"
A massive black seal spread across the floor, followed by a surge of white smoke. From the smoke emerged a gargantuan purple snake.
"Orochimaru, I'll require 200 sacrifices this time," the snake demanded, its voice deep and resonant.
"Done," Orochimaru replied, leaping onto the snake's head.
The purple serpent surged forward, scattering operatives like leaves in a storm. Narrow passages posed no obstacle as the snake smashed through walls and tore open pathways with brute force.
Root and Anbu ninjas launched attacks—ninjutsu, shuriken, and kunai—but the snake's scales deflected them all. Its body was as impenetrable as solid rock.
This purple serpent was Orochimaru's most powerful summoning beast, capable of contending with tailed beasts for short periods. Its immense strength and destructive power were unparalleled, though summoning it came with the price of human sacrifices.
Bursting through the Root base's exit, the snake rampaged through Konoha's streets, knocking down trees and buildings in its path.
The destruction it left behind was akin to a dried-up riverbed cutting through the village.
Clang—
At the Hokage Building, the village meeting was interrupted by the sound of tremors and crashing debris.
"What's happening?"
The Third Hokage's expression darkened as he flashed to the top of the Hokage Building.
Other attendees, including Uchiha Fugaku, followed him, gathering on the rooftop to observe the chaos.
In the distance, they saw a massive purple snake wreaking havoc, leaving clouds of dust and smoke in its wake.
"A giant purple snake!"
Fugaku's eyes narrowed, recognition flickering in his gaze.
In the current ninja world, there was only one person capable of summoning such a beast—Orochimaru.
Having recently completed a deal with him, Fugaku immediately knew who was behind the commotion.
Orochimaru was in Konoha, and he had just made his presence unmistakably known.
