Chapter 49: [BONUS] Put Your Pride Aside

The Kazekge snarled at his words, trying to reform his wings, but it was futile - maintaining flight for so long, especially with that S-Class Jutsu, had drained him of much of his chakra. All the leader of the Suna Shinobi could do was raise an iron sand shield against the Patriarch's lightning infused slash, but even that was pointless, as the blade cut through the shield easily, leaving a sizable slash across the Kazekage's chest. Katsuro didn't stop there, however. Enhancing his Thunderclap Impulse with even more chakra, he grew faster, and paired with Shunpo, he flashed around the Kazekage, who could barely keep up with his iron sand, inflicting dozens of slashes across his body, ranging from shallow to deep.

I messed up - how did I underestimate his abilities this much? He must have downplayed his strength on purpose in our battle before! But at his age - to have the intelligence to be able to fool as an experienced and tactical Shinobi as me, and then to have the strength to be able to pull it off?

As his heart rate increased and he started to sweat, the Kazekage felt something he hadn't felt in a long time - fear.

Is what he said true? Does this child truly have no limits? A healer, a scout, a tactician and a combatant.

Senju Katsuro! Is there anything you're not capable of doing?!

While the Kazekage began to slow down from a lack of chakra and blood loss, Katsuro only grew faster, and eventually saw his opportunity.

The Kazekage made a wild attempt to smash Katsuro with a wall of iron sand, physically swinging his arm in the process to control the iron sand, as his depleted chakra reserves meant he could no longer control the iron sand with solely his mind. But his outburst was a mistake - Katsuro easily dodged the messy attempt, and used Shunpo, instantly dashing to right next to the Kazekage.

Before the leader of the Hidden Sand could react, Katsuro sliced downwards with his lightning chakra infused blade, severing the Kazekage's arm instantly.

Blood spurted from the wound as the Kazekage screamed, drenching both the Kazekage and Katsuro, but the Senju Patriarch only kept going, and now that the Kazekage's defence was severely weakened, his cuts grew in size and depth, until eventually, the Kazekage was forced to the ground.

Katsuro held his blade at the Kazekage's neck, and the latter closed his eyes, waiting for the final blow.

"Surrender."

Suna's leader opened his eyes in surprise, before his eyes flashed sharply with anger.

"I would rather die," he spat, meeting the eyes of the man who could end his life in an instant, disgusted and unafraid now.

"Be that as it may, you have a duty, Kazekage. Look around you. You have lost our battle. We have captured the One Tails. Sensei and the Ino-Shika-Cho trio are, at worst, an equal match for Rasa, Chiyo and Ebizo, if not stronger, and if I go over there after I kill you, they'll certainly lose. Look around you," Katsuro repeated again.

"Save your people from needless death. There is nothing to be won here."

Taking laboured breaths, the Kazekage looked around. The Senju Patriarch was right. The Sand Shinobi were losing. Be it because of the medical nin of Konoha, who kept on healing injured Leaf Shinobi and putting them back on the battlefield, or the presence of Tsunade, who was both healing the Leaf and harming the Sand, or perhaps just due to a difference in quality of Shinobi - they were losing. He made eye contact with one of his own Shinobi - the man was fighting yes, but as he looked at his leader, his eyes seemed to betray some sort of solemn understanding - a look of hopelessness mixed with helplessness. Before anything else could happen, the same man was struck by a kunai in the neck - a Leaf Shinobi, one of many that had outnumbered his comrade, had thrown it.

The Kazekage looked away. He saw, in the distance, the fight between the White Fang and the Ino-Shika-Cho trio versus Rasa, Chiyo, Ebizo and the rest of the Puppeeter Corps. To an inexperienced Shinobi, it might have seemed like an even match, but the Kazekage knew better - the puppet army was slowing down, as was Rasa, while the Leaf seemed to be perfectly fine. The Kazekage looked away again.

"What is your choice, Kazekage? Will you surrender this war and your pride, or will you die in vain, and take your comrades - those whose lives you are responsible for - with you?"

The Kazekage was silent for a long time, and Katsuro sighed, thinking his silence meant no. But just before he could raise his blade -

"We surrender." The Kazekage's voice was barely audible, the quietest whisper he'd ever spoken.

"Huh?" Katsuro said, genuinely having not heard him.

"I said, WE SURRENDER!" This time, the Kazekage shouted, and his words were heard all across the battlefield. Both sides paused their attacks and both sides paused their defences, cautious to see what the other side would do.

"All Leaf Shinobi except the medical ninja - cease your actions!" Sakumo's voice was heard by all the forces of Konoha and Suna alike, prompting the Suna Shinobi to promptly retreat back to their base, carrying their injured and dead with them, as the Leaf Shinobi cheered in their victory.

Much to Chiyo's anger, Rasa and Ebizo began pulling her away too, while she screamed curses and profanities at Sakumo, and Tsunade began giving orders to the medical ninja, accelerating the healing of the injured Leaf Shinobi.

Katsuro finally removed his blade from the throat of the Kazekage, relieved that the war was over.

"You made the right choice, Kazekage."

The Kazekage gave no reply or response of any kind as he stood, and used his iron sand to stop the bleeding of his arm, as Sakumo arrived at the scene.

"Treat your wounded. Bury and mourn your fallen. We will conduct peace talks and negotiations tomorrow at noon, on this same battlefield. Is that acceptable?"

"It is." The Kazekage replied curtly, as Suna's medical ninja arrived at his side, and began to treat his wounds as they went back to their camp.

Katsuro and Sakumo stood there in silence for a short time, watching the figure of the retreating Kazekage slowly fade into the horizon.

We won.

However, the able Leaf Shinobi interrupted them with their cheers, as they hoisted the White Fang and the Stormbreaker onto their shoulders, cheering their names.

Sakumo and Katsuro smiled at each other, beginning to laugh.

We won.
