Chapter 19: Chapter 19: The Shadow’s Chains
1. The Weight of a Choice
Rin sat on the rooftop of his apartment, staring at the village below. The streets of Konoha were quiet, the warm glow of lanterns flickering in the night.
But inside his mind, a storm raged.
Danzo's words still echoed in his ears.
"I offer you power and protection. You are free to refuse… but that would be unwise."
Danzo wanted control. But Rin refused to be someone's puppet.
However… rejecting the old war hawk outright was dangerous.
"I need to be careful. If Danzo sees me as a threat, he won't hesitate to eliminate me."
His fingers tightened around his kunai.
"I need a plan."
2. A Dangerous Test
Deciding to push himself further, Rin moved toward the training grounds, where he could test his evolving abilities in secret.
He closed his eyes and focused on his chakra pathways.
Indra's chakra—cold, sharp, and precise—flowed through his right side.
Asura's chakra—warm, powerful, and wild—surged through his left.
Slowly, he tried to merge them again.
A spark of violet-blue energy flickered around his fingertips.
"If I can stabilize this energy, I might create something entirely new."
But before he could push further—
A kunai whistled through the air, aiming straight for his neck.
Rin's Sharingan flashed, and he twisted his body at the last second, barely avoiding the attack.
A shadowed figure emerged from the trees.
Root.
3. The Root's Warning
The masked shinobi stepped forward, his presence cold and emotionless.
"Danzo-sama does not like to wait," the Anbu agent said.
Rin exhaled slowly, slipping into a defensive stance. "I told him—I need time."
The agent didn't respond.
Instead—he attacked.
4. The Battle in the Dark
The Root operative moved like a ghost, vanishing and reappearing behind Rin in an instant.
CLANG!
Their kunai clashed, sparks flying as Rin twisted, landing a kick to his opponent's ribs.
The Root agent barely flinched.
"Tch. They're well-trained."
The agent's hands blurred through hand seals.
"Wind Style: Vacuum Blade!"
A sharp gust of cutting wind surged forward.
Rin's eyes narrowed. "I can't overpower that."
Instead—he dodged, sliding under the attack, closing the distance again.
And then—he reached out and touched his opponent's arm.
[Bloodline Detected… Copying Ability…]
A rush of foreign chakra flooded his system.
"What is this—?"
His opponent suddenly froze.
Rin's Sharingan flared, and in that moment, he saw it—
The agent's body was covered in tiny sealing scripts, invisible to the naked eye.
"A curse mark… Danzo's insurance."
Rin jumped back just as the agent collapsed, his body stiff and unresponsive.
The curse mark had activated, silencing him forever.
Rin clenched his fists.
"Danzo sent him to test me. And the moment I copied his ability—"
"He was erased."
This was a warning.
5. The Silent Threat
Rin stared down at the fallen Root agent.
"Danzo doesn't trust me. This was his way of reminding me that he can kill me at any time."
He exhaled sharply.
"I need to be smarter than him. Stronger than him."
Looking up at the full moon, Rin's resolve hardened.
"I won't be controlled. Not by Danzo. Not by the Hokage. Not by anyone."
He vanished into the night—ready to become the hunter, not the hunted.
