One Piece: Legend of the Star Sea

Buggy was in the middle of ranting to Luffy about his bitter past with Red-Haired Shanks when, out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Alex and Nami lying on the ground, oddly motionless. They hadn't gotten up, and it looked like something had knocked them flat. His heart skipped with delight.

As he continued to monologue to Luffy, Buggy began slowly drifting in their direction.

"I'll never forgive that red-haired bastard! Because of him, I accidentally ate a Devil Fruit worth 100 million berries and turned into a damned landlubber! Now I can never search for the massive treasure hidden beneath the sea!"

The hatred on Buggy's face wasn't fake. Back then, if Shanks hadn't startled him, he wouldn't have swallowed the Devil Fruit he'd tricked the rest of the crew into giving up. That one slip cost him dearly.

"So it really was Shanks who saved you after you fell into the sea?" Luffy asked, grinning. Buggy had just admitted that when he'd jumped into the ocean to retrieve a treasure map, he'd sunk due to the effects of the Devil Fruit—and Shanks had been the one to rescue him.

"No! That's not the point I was trying to make!" Buggy nearly coughed up blood from sheer frustration.

He had gone to all that trouble to portray Shanks as a vile, destructive force who had ruined his life and derailed his dreams. And yet, Luffy managed to twist it into a heartwarming tale of rescue and heroism. Buggy felt like he was going to explode.

"That damn redhead set my plans back a whole decade! I was furious! If I couldn't have the treasures hidden beneath the sea, then I swore I'd seize every last treasure floating above it!"

Buggy's upper body floated up, eyes flashing as he stole a glance toward Alex and Nami. Then he sneered and said to Luffy, "Anyone who dares covet my treasure or stand in my way—be they thief or pirate—I'll never forgive them!"

With that declaration, Buggy's upper half flew right over Luffy's head, easily evading him and diving down toward Nami and Alex from the air.

"You thieving woman! You dared to lay hands on my treasure!? I don't care where you run—I'll find you, and when I do, you'll pay!"

At that moment, Nami regained consciousness and pushed Alex off her. Sitting up groggily, she clutched her throbbing head. Before she could piece together what had happened, she saw Buggy's snarling face barreling down toward her from the sky, both hands gripping throwing knives.

He hurled a flurry of blades straight at her.

If she didn't dodge, she'd be skewered for sure.

Panic kicked in. Nami didn't have time to think. Acting purely on instinct, she ducked and rolled to the side, curling in on herself and covering her head. "I'm sorry, I—"

But the sentence never finished.

In the middle of her frantic dodge, she ended up lunging straight toward Alex. And with horrible timing, their faces collided—mouth to mouth.

Nami froze instantly, petrified on the spot. Her brain shut down. Words, thoughts—everything went blank.

What she had meant to say to Buggy was:

"I'm sorry—I didn't mean to steal your treasure!"

It was a panicked, reflexive lie to save her life. But the sentence was cut short, and to Alex—who had just woken up—it sounded completely different.

Alex had just been shoved off and was regaining consciousness. Though still foggy-headed, he vaguely remembered Nami swinging those nunchucks at him earlier. His head still throbbed from the blow. He'd wanted to ask her what the hell she was thinking.

Seriously—he hadn't even done anything wrong, and she'd cracked him in the skull. He was pretty pissed about it.

But before he could get a word out, he heard her whisper "I'm sorry"—then suddenly, she threw herself on him and kissed him.

Alex's mind went blank.

What the hell?

This… this woman has a pretty unusual way of apologizing.

Well...

I guess I'll forgive her then.
