One Piece: Legend of the Star Sea

Chapter 60: A Debt Too Deep and Memories Too Faint

So they decided he was just messing with them—and promptly jumped into his boat to wrestle with him.

Of course, Alex couldn't exactly tell them he was a time-traveling outsider who used to know what would happen in this world. No matter how hard he tried to explain, it just didn't make sense to them.

The three of them ended up in a shouting match and full-on brawl until Nami lost her patience and knocked all three of them out with one punch each.

Nami's own reaction to his "amnesia" was… practical. The first thing she asked was whether he still remembered he owed her money.

Alex had an idea—maybe he could use his memory loss as an excuse to cancel the debt.

But Nami had already prepared for that. She whipped out an IOU with Alex's thumbprint on it. Even if he had amnesia, she said, the debt was legally binding.

Alex was stunned. He had no recollection of signing anything.

Turns out, on the afternoon they left Orange Town, while Alex was unconscious from his injuries, Nami had taken the opportunity to write up a loan agreement and press his thumbprint onto it while dressing his wounds.

Just like that, Alex owed her a massive sum without even knowing it.

To make matters worse, when he tried to complain to Luffy and Zoro, they totally threw him under the bus.

"Whoa, you must be rich, Alex! Can I borrow some money for meat?" Luffy had asked with sparkling eyes upon hearing about the 405.5 million Berries debt.

Alex nearly collapsed. If owing that much money made him "rich," then he was doomed.

The problem was—Alex had never borrowed that kind of money from Nami. In fact, he hadn't received a single Berry from her. On the contrary, it was Nami who had stolen a few hundred Berries from him—that was the real truth.

Yet Luffy, in his usual oblivious way, even said, "No wonder you helped pay Nami back for sewing up my straw hat. Turns out you've been rich all along!"

Hearing that, Alex's face turned so dark it was practically dripping ink.

Zoro, still lying lazily on the boat, hadn't noticed Alex's expression and sighed thoughtfully. "So we won't have to worry about running out of booze. With all that money, man… I'm really jealous."

At that moment, Alex truly wanted to take off his shoes and smack both of these idiots into the sea to feed the turtles.

Watching Luffy—this one-track-mind goofball—get totally swindled by Nami and then turn around to help her collect the debt, Alex gave up any hope of winning a war of words. In just a few sentences, Nami had turned Luffy into her debt collector, now demanding repayment from Alex.

When Nami turned to him, holding a crisp 10,000-Berry bill in one hand and the thumbprint-stamped IOU in the other, flashing a playful-yet-sweet smile, Alex's heart skipped a beat.

He could've sworn… he'd seen this version of Nami before. But where?

He racked his brain but couldn't remember.

The more he reviewed his memories, the more disturbing the truth became: his memories of this world were becoming increasingly vague. In some memories, the people weren't even distinguishable—just blurry silhouettes. He couldn't remember their faces, or who they were supposed to be.

Cold sweat began to pour down his back.

Nami, thinking his sweating was due to his injuries, came over with genuine concern. "Are you okay?" she asked, worried.

Looking into her eyes, Alex suddenly remembered Nami's hometown—Cocoyasi Village. But… he couldn't remember anything that had happened there. That alone made him feel deeply uneasy. Why did his memory always seem to cut out at the most important parts?

Why was this happening?

Sitting dazedly on the boat, Alex fell into deep thought. He began recalling how many times his head had taken a hit recently.

There was the giant whirlpool when he first set out to sea with Luffy—he'd been struck in the head by more than a few gold bars. In Orange Town, during the battle, five hefty chunks of rubble had smashed into the back of his skull. Then, when they left Orange Town, Zoro carried him onto the boat—and banged his head hard during the process.

Oh, and Nami had punched him in the head more than once too.

Now Alex was seriously beginning to suspect that the frequent trauma to his brain had caused these memory gaps… this strange amnesia that kept him from recalling vital information.
