One Piece: My Name is Jack, I'm Very Resistant to Beating

Chapter 97: Chapter 97: This Is Human Nature

The prisoners, though curious about Yamato and Jack, didn't dare approach or strike up a conversation.

Years of breaking rocks had taught them caution. They didn't recognize Jack or Yamato, but their instincts warned them to steer clear. Jack's hulking frame and intimidating eyes—dominated by whites—screamed danger. Meanwhile, Yamato, though seemingly just a girl, carried heavy stones with ease, darting around like it was nothing. Clearly, these two were no ordinary people.

Add to that their shackles and the pirate guards keeping a close watch, and the prisoners' curiosity quickly gave way to quiet wariness.

That quiet, however, shattered completely when it came time for Jack and Yamato to eat.

In the Udon Quarry Prison, meals were basic at best: rice balls, sometimes sweetened or filled with scraps of meat during rare celebrations. To earn even a single rice ball, prisoners had to toil endlessly, carrying five massive stones for each meager serving. The system ensured they stayed alive and worked, while keeping them too exhausted to think about rebellion.

Jack and Yamato had spent hours moving stones, yet the food overseers hadn't handed them a single rice ball. Some prisoners noticed and smirked, eager to see the pair humbled by hunger.

But what happened next made them all feel like fools.

"What's that smell?!"

"Is that... meat?!"

"And wine?! There's wine!"

"Wait... are those vegetables?!"

"Are you kidding me?! There's even fruit?!"

A group of pirates appeared, struggling to carry massive trays piled high with fragrant, steaming food. The aroma alone made the prisoners' stomachs growl in unison.

"Could it be... has Queen gone soft?" someone muttered in disbelief.

The prisoners watched, entranced, as the pirates approached. But their reverie was interrupted by the crack of whips.

Snap!

"Stop gawking and get back to work!" barked one of the guards.

The prisoners reluctantly obeyed, their eyes lingering on the food as it was paraded past. Some swallowed their saliva, desperate to imagine what it might taste like.

The food was laid out on a large rock, and Yamato wasted no time. With a gleeful shout, she darted forward, reaching for the juiciest-looking piece of meat.

"Hey! Don't touch that!" Jack barked, grabbing her hand.

Before Yamato could argue, Jack snatched a barrel of wine and poured it over her hands.

"Wash your hands first," he grumbled. "Hygiene is important, you know."

Then he pointed to the meat she'd been eyeing.

"Also, that's elephant meat. Stick to something else—you can't handle this."

Without waiting for her response, Jack grabbed the elephant steak and tore off a massive bite.

Yamato wrinkled her nose in disgust. "Why would you eat elephant?! Elephants are adorable!"

Jack raised an eyebrow, chewing as he replied, "Adorable, huh? I don't see you treating me any better. Besides, the best part of an elephant is its second trunk."

Yamato froze, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Second trunk? What are you talking about? Elephants only have one trunk!"

Jack smirked. "Oh, they've got a second one. Mine's even better—it's got a mind of its own."

"What?! You're lying! Show me!"

Jack sighed dramatically. "You wouldn't even be able to see it. Too short."

Yamato's eyes narrowed. "What did you just say?! Show me right now!"

"Be reasonable! You're a girl! How can I—"

"I don't care! Show me!"

"I can't! It's sleeping!"

"Wake it up, then!"

"You wake it up!"

As their bickering escalated, a group of prisoners saw their chance. Food and drink had been knocked to the ground during the commotion, and the prisoners couldn't hold back any longer. They rushed forward, desperate to snatch whatever scraps they could.

The pirates moved to intervene, but their leader, Babanuki, stopped them.

"Hold it!" Babanuki growled, stomping over to Jack and Yamato. "What the hell do you two think you're doing?!"

Yamato clambered to her feet, blinking in confusion. "Huh? Doing what?"

Jack, unfazed, slung Yamato over his shoulder and stood tall. His imposing figure silenced the prisoners immediately. But one bold man stepped forward, fury etched across his face.

"That was food! How dare you waste it like that?!"

"Do you have any idea how long it's been since we've had real meat? Or wine?"

"We're all prisoners here! Why do you two get special treatment?!"

Jack glanced at the man, then chuckled darkly. "Special treatment, huh?"

He waved a hand, and one of the guards hurriedly unlocked his and Yamato's Sea Prism shackles. The sight left the prisoners stunned.

Jack grabbed another barrel of wine, chugged it down in one go, and wiped his mouth before turning back to the crowd.

"You want meat? Wine? Fine." His voice boomed. "Bring more food! And gather all the prisoners here!"

Babanuki hesitated but nodded. Soon, hundreds of prisoners were assembled, staring hungrily at the mountain of food behind Jack.

Jack grinned. "Alright. Let's play a little game. Whoever wins gets to feast."

The prisoners leaned forward, anticipation and desperation in their eyes.

"Here's the rule: slap the person next to you, and you'll get a piece of fruit."

For a moment, there was silence. Then—

Smack!

Smack! Smack!

The first slap broke the dam, and soon the quarry echoed with the sound of blows. Pirates tossed fruit to the participants, fueling the chaos.

"Good," Jack said, his grin widening. "Now punch your neighbor, and you'll get a drumstick."

"And if you make them bleed? You'll earn a cup of wine."

The prisoners, who had once held firm against whips and torture, now descended into madness. Even the hardened samurai of Wano, known for their unyielding spirit, turned on one another, their eyes burning with desperation.

Babanuki watched in stunned silence, his usual scowl replaced by an expression of disbelief.

Jack clapped him on the shoulder. "See that, Babanuki? That's human nature."

Then, with a smirk, he added, "By the way, your chest elephant's tusks are looking pretty pathetic. I'll have Queen fix them up for you later."
