Chapter 8: 7 - The Capture of Nezumi

7 - The Capture of Nezumi

Meanwhile, in the office of Fleet Admiral Sengoku, his fury was evident as he stared at the abruptly ended call from Kara.

—That damn brat dared to hang up on me! —he roared, slamming his desk with force.

Beside him, Tsuru shook her head with a sigh.

—Are you sure it was a good idea to give her permission to inspect the naval bases? —she asked seriously.

Sengoku took a deep breath, quickly calming himself.

—Yes. She's been in Marineford for too long. If she stayed here any longer, she would inevitably cause some disaster. Besides, a little corruption cleanup is never a bad thing, and who better than Kara to handle it? At the very least, Marineford will be peaceful for a while.

Tsuru showed a slight smile.

—Well, compared to her early days, she's actually quite calm now. She's unlikely to cause trouble… unless someone angers her.

Sengoku nodded gravely.

—An incident like the Willhill massacre is unlikely to happen again, but if it did… —he clenched his fists—. If Kara becomes the nightmare of the corrupt once more, then so be it.

His gaze darkened, remembering what had happened with anger—not towards Kara, but towards those who had pushed her to the limit. Even he, as Fleet Admiral, wouldn't have been able to handle the situation any differently… but the fact that a young woman had to do it still weighed on his conscience.

Tsuru stood up with a somber expression.

—We should be grateful that, on that day, Kara didn't lose faith in the Marines.

With those words, she silently left the office.

Meanwhile, on the ship that once belonged to Kuro's pirates, the skull flag had been replaced with a clumsily painted Marine seagull emblem.

Kara was fishing peacefully when, in the distance, she saw a small boat approaching. It was packed with unconscious people and barely staying afloat.

—Looks like they're done —she commented without stopping her fishing. Then, with a careless gesture, she sent Zoro and Coby to capture the pirates floating in the sea.

As she watched them, she noticed someone was missing.

—Hmph… Looks like Gin escaped —she murmured, though she didn't pay much attention to it.

With the ship now full, Kara sighed and stretched.

—Alright, we still have to deal with the ugly fish and the rat. After that, I'll go bother Smokey.

With that, the ship set sail toward a nearby naval base to drop off the prisoners.

Elsewhere, on Cocoyasi Island, Usopp strolled leisurely down a dirt path, looking up at the sky with his hands behind his head.

—I wonder if Luffy's fight is over.

—I'm sure it is —Yosaku replied, walking beside him—. Brother Luffy is strong.

—Yeah, maybe he's already at the island's dock —Johnny added with a grin.

Just then, a loud crash echoed through the forest. The three of them stopped, alarmed, and looked in that direction.

—AAAAAH, LOOK OUT!

Suddenly, a boat came flying through the treetops. In it, Luffy laughed loudly with his usual wide grin.

—AAAAAH! —the three of them screamed, quickly running for their lives.

—Nishishishi! We're here! —Luffy exclaimed excitedly, completely unaware that he had almost run them over.

—Idiot, you almost killed us! —Sanji roared, grabbing Luffy's head angrily.

To the side, Gin sat with a pale face, clutching his stomach with a clear urge to vomit.

After several chaotic events, the crew eventually ended up at Nami's house, following her sister to witness Captain Nezumi attempting to confiscate the money Nami had gathered to buy Arlong's island.

When Luffy and his crew reunited in the village square with a devastated Nami, the decision was clear: they marched forward with determination to defeat Arlong once and for all.

Luffy faced Arlong, as expected. In place of Zoro, who wasn't with them, Gin took on the role of fighter and battled Hachi. Though he ended up severely wounded, he managed to defeat him before collapsing exhausted on the ground. He had proven his worth in combat… now he just needed more experience.

When Luffy finally defeated Arlong, even destroying Arlong Park in the process, the citizens watched the scene with astonishment and excitement. The tyranny of the fish-men had ended.

However, the celebration was abruptly interrupted when Nezumi reappeared, announcing that both Arlong's bounty and all the treasure would be seized by the Government.

Shock and anger spread among the people, but just before the Straw Hats could attack him, a female voice rang out behind Nezumi.

—Aaaah… corruption. A disease that, no matter how hard I try to eradicate, always reappears.

Nezumi spun around abruptly, startled.

—Who are you!?

Standing before him was a woman elegantly dressed, accompanied by a young man with green hair and another with pink hair, both watching her with curiosity.

Before Nezumi could react, Luffy and his crew tensed up.

—Damn, Kara caught up to us! Run! —Luffy shouted, grabbing his crew and sprinting away toward the village.

—Huh? —The others, confused, instinctively followed him.

The commotion caught the attention of the onlookers, but Kara simply let them go. She hadn't come for them.

Still, she couldn't help but smile upon seeing that Luffy still ran away whenever he saw her.

—Well, you can go celebrate now. I have a few words to say to Captain Nezumi of the 16th Division of the East Blue —Kara said, looking at the villagers, who still didn't understand what was happening.

—Arrest these people! She's obviously one of Arlong's followers! —Nezumi shouted in desperation, pointing at Kara.

Without hesitation, his soldiers raised their weapons, aiming at both her and Zoro, who quickly readied his sword. Beside him, Coby, his legs trembling, raised his fists in a clumsy fighting stance.

Kara sighed indifferently.

—No need to drag this out. Let's finish quickly.

The air around her grew heavy. The very atmosphere seemed to distort.

The soldiers began to feel an overwhelming pressure on their bodies, as if an immense force was crushing them. One by one, they collapsed to their knees, unable to remain standing.

—I am Marine Inspector, Vice Admiral Monkey D. Kara, and you are all under arrest for corruption —she declared calmly, watching as some struggled to breathe under the weight of her power.

But this wasn't Conqueror's Haki. The force emanating from Kara came from her magical energy, a suffocating pressure that could be even deadlier than simply knocking out her opponents.

Nezumi, trembling, tried to resist, but his body barely responded.

—A Vice Admiral…! That's impossible! No one ever told me about you! —he exclaimed in panic.

Kara looked at him coldly.

—A corrupt officer isn't warned when they're under investigation, are they? —she replied with an ironic smile as she pulled out a Den Den Mushi.

She called the 15th Marine Branch, the same one she had previously inspected. After conducting a quick investigation and delivering the captured pirates, she had made sure to bring reinforcements to apprehend Nezumi.

That was the reason they arrived just after Arlong's defeat and not before, despite being closer to Cocoyasi Village than Luffy.

Soon after, a Marine ship approached the island. The soldiers quickly disembarked and saluted Kara with respect.

—Vice Admiral Kara! All officers from the 16th Branch have been captured, and the illegally obtained money from Captain Nezumi's house has been confiscated.

Kara nodded in approval.

—Good. Return to the villages what rightfully belongs to them. You will take charge of the 16th Branch until a new officer is assigned. Also, assist in rebuilding the villages these idiots destroyed.

—Yes, ma'am! —the Captain of the 15th Branch responded enthusiastically. Although the responsibility was temporary, he knew this would earn him important merits for a potential promotion.

Meanwhile, Nezumi and his men were being arrested, their faces filled with desperation.

—I… I'm sorry! I won't do it again! I'll return all the money, just don't send me to Impel Down! —Nezumi cried desperately, tears streaming down his face as he begged for mercy.

Kara looked at him with disdain and clicked her tongue.

—Damn, you really are ugly… Take him away.

The Marines immediately obeyed, grabbing Nezumi by the arms as he kicked and continued to plead in vain.

Kara only sighed in boredom as she watched him being dragged away. Another corrupt Marine taken down.
