Chapter 110: Chapter 110: A Legendary Pirate Makes His Move
Aboard the Moby Dick, Whitebeard's booming laughter immediately caught the attention of the surrounding crew.
Young Marco had been chatting with a few others, but upon hearing his old man laughing so heartily while holding a newspaper, his curiosity was piqued. He turned and asked with a grin:
"Pops, what's got you laughing like that?"
"Did some good news come about Oden?"
Marco walked up behind Whitebeard, craning his neck to peek at the newspaper in his hands.
"It's not about Oden," Whitebeard replied.
"It's about the Golden Lion."
"That bastard took a serious hit from the Marines. Got his arm chopped off by two bratty Marines working together."
"Gurarararara! He's getting worse with age, that fool."
Still chuckling, Whitebeard handed the newspaper back to Marco.
"What? Golden Lion? You mean Shiki the Golden Lion?" Marco blinked. "His arm was cut off by Marines? Didn't he disappear in that massive storm a while back? So he's alive? And he clashed with the Marines again?"
Marco was genuinely surprised as he took the newspaper from Whitebeard and began reading carefully.
The rest of the crewmates nearby, who had been drinking and chatting, perked up when they heard Whitebeard and Marco's exchange. They quickly gathered around.
Shiki losing an arm to the Marines? That was the kind of event that could shake the world.
Although the so-called "Four Emperors" system hadn't yet taken shape, several pirates in the New World already possessed that kind of dominance.
The Roger Pirates, Whitebeard Pirates, Big Mom Pirates, and the Flying Pirates led by Shiki were all names that echoed across the seas.
Even if the title "Emperor" wasn't officially used yet, these pirate crews had the strength to match it.
Had Shiki remained active decades later, he undoubtedly would have been one of the Yonko.
Opening the paper, Marco's eyes landed immediately on the bold front-page headline:
"Spoils of War — The Famous Blade Kogarashi: The Marines' Rising Stars!"
Beneath that eye-catching title was a single photo: a severed arm, and a long sword lying beside it.
Marco squinted, bringing the paper closer to his face. He couldn't definitively identify whether the sword belonged to Shiki, so he asked Whitebeard directly:
"Pops, is this really Kogarashi, Shiki's blade? You don't think the Marines are bluffing, do you?"
Whitebeard paused for a moment, then smirked widely.
"Gurararara. That's definitely Shiki's sword. I've crossed blades with him before. I've seen it myself."
Hearing Whitebeard's confirmation, Marco and the rest of the crew examined the article with greater interest.
The report itself was quite sparse, only briefly stating that in the New World, on some unnamed island, Shiki had encountered a Marine force led by Vice Admiral Kuzan.
According to the piece, it was Kuzan and a Marine Captain named Yoriichi Tsugikuni who teamed up to defeat Shiki and sever his arm. Kogarashi, Shiki's personal blade, had then become Vice Admiral Kuzan's war trophy.
After the brief summary, the rest of the article was filled with flowery language, painting Shiki as a fearsome pirate and praising the Marines for their valiant struggle and hard-won victory.
It was heavily embellished, clearly touched up with "official polish."
Marco scratched his head as he read. But before he could speak, Teach—who had been listening from behind—posed his own question:
"Pops, you really think this isn't a hoax? I heard Shiki had clashed with the Roger Pirates recently, and that the Flying Pirates were caught in an unprecedented storm."
"What if the Marines just picked up Kogarashi from the wreckage? I mean, those two Marines who supposedly beat him are way too young, aren't they?"
"That Vice Admiral might be in his twenties, sure, but that Captain—he's only... 14?!"
Teach was known for his suspicious mind, and while he played the part of an honest, dim-witted crewmate aboard Whitebeard's ship, moments like this betrayed his true nature.
Like now.
"No chance," Whitebeard said firmly. "That kind of lie would be far too easy to expose. And Teach, do you even know who Shiki is? A swordsman of that caliber wouldn't just misplace his blade."
"It means one of two things—he died, or he was defeated. I doubt Shiki would willingly gift his sword to the Marines."
As he spoke, Whitebeard rested the hilt of Murakumogiri on the deck and pushed himself to his feet. He strolled toward the bow of the ship and gazed out at the wide, open sea. After a few seconds of thought, he turned back and shouted to his sons:
"The Marines have entered the New World! Lately, more and more Marine ships have been spotted here. I've got a feeling something big is coming."
"They've always focused on maintaining order in the four Blues. For them to move this boldly, there's a reason."
"I suspect this might have something to do with Oden."
"Marco, have the boys start gathering intel on the Marines' movements. We're going to find out what they're really up to!"
The sea breeze billowed Whitebeard's massive cloak behind him as he gave his command.
Marco nodded without hesitation. "Got it, Pops."
With that, blue flames flared across Marco's back as a pair of fiery wings unfurled. He beat them once and took off from the deck.
Having issued his orders, Whitebeard turned back toward the horizon and whispered under his breath:
"Oden... are you the Marines' target? I won't allow any harm to come to my family. Even if that family includes my foolish little brother."
As Whitebeard's command echoed across the deck, his pirates sprang into motion.
The New World, already lively, now boiled over with activity thanks to the Whitebeard Pirates' mobilization.
Meanwhile, back on Lodestar Island...
Vice Admiral Kuzan and his Marines were busy helping the residents rebuild homes and structures damaged during the fierce battle.
A week of repairs had restored much of the functionality to the once-devastated town.
During this time, Yoriichi's Haki and swordsmanship hadn't improved noticeably, but his carpentry skills definitely had.
Clang. Clang. Clang.
On the roof of a villager's house, Yoriichi hammered down wooden planks, nailing each one securely into the roof's frame.
After securing one, he turned and shouted down below:
"Shanks, toss me another board."
On the ground, a straw-hatted boy gave a weary "Alright..." before grabbing another plank and lobbing it upward.
"Damn it... why am I doing this kind of thing? I'm a pirate!"
Grumbling under his breath, Shanks handed up another board and stood by with another in hand, waiting for Yoriichi's next call.
After the battle with Shiki, Shanks and Buggy had tried to slip away, but it didn't work.
They were captured by the Marines, and ever since, the two of them had been conscripted as laborers, helping rebuild Lodestar under Marine supervision.
